| April 17, 2015 DOERBAUM Men's 55 86 posts | 44/375 -VS- 52/300 SOMEBODY PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHY "SENIOR BATS" ARE THAT MUCH BETTER.... IF THE BPF IS ONLY 1% HOTTER THAN THE OLD 1.20 BPF, THAT TRANSLATES TO 3 EXTRA FEET ON A BALL THAT LANDS AT THE BASE OF THE FENCE, AND IT HITS HALF WAY UP THE FENCE. SOMETHING ELSE HAS TO BE GOING ON. AS TO THE BALLS, ANY BALL WILL TRAVEL IF YOU HIT IT GOOD. NOT ALMOST GOOD, BUT ON THE SCREWS. PLAYED IN WINTER HAVEN THIS MORNING WITH A HEAT INDEX OF 84 AND REAL TEMP OF 80. SECOND AT BAT USED MY BRAND NEW NIGHTMARE (6 TOTAL SWINGS ON IT) AND HIT A LINE DRIVE ABOUT 330 DEAD INTO A 10MPH WIND WITH A 44/375 TRUMP. MY QUESTION IS, WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT HAD I BEEN HITTING A 52/300 BALL? |

The 1.20 and 1.21 are better defined as versions of a bat, with the higher rating the hotter bat, but it doesn't mean 1% hotter. Wooden bats are at 1.15 according to some of the searches I did. | April 17, 2015 DOERBAUM Men's 55 86 posts | BASED ON THE LINK, AND MY MATH, THAT MEANS IT IS LESS THAN 1%. IF YOU TAKE WHAT IS STATED IN THIS ARTICLE AND MULTIPLY IT OUT AS 54.6% (BALL AND WALL) X 1.20 (OLD STANDARD) = 65.52% AND 54.6% (BALL AND WALL) X 1.21 (BALL AND SENIOR BAT) = 66.07% THAT MEANS THE DIFFERENCE IS ONLY .55%. LIKE I STATED BEFORE, THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE GOING ON HERE. PERHAPS AT HIGHER BAT SPEEDS (IN EXCESS OF THE TESTING SPEEDS) THE BAT WALLS GET AN EXPONENTIALLY BETTER REACTION?? YEA, I KNOW, A BIT GEEKY IN MY ANALYSIS, BUT I CANT HELP IT!!!! (ENGINEERING BACKGROUND TO BLAME) DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE TEST SPEEDS ARE FOR THIS SCENARIO? BALL SPEED, TEST PARAMETERS, ETC?? |

The change to the 1.21 standard was solely a re-calibration of the testing criteria due to changes over time in the balls used for the testing ... The 1.20 standard for older testing/balls is technically identical to the newer 1.21 standard for the newer balls used in the current testing ... It's been quite a while since we've posted this, and it was done frequently in the older days in response to repetitive postings by a former message board member who was concerned about this issue ... But here's a reprise of our position: SSUSA has no current intention, nor are we considering, ANY change to the bat and ball specification combination now being used ... The bats will continue to be required to meet the 1.20/1.21 BPF criteria and the balls will continue to be the 44 cor/375 comp. specification ... This will hopefully clarify things for you and others interested in this topic ... |

HAVNT PLAYED IN 10+ YEARS AND WANT TO LEARN ABOUT ALL THE NEW TECHNOLOGY THAT HAS BEEN INTRODUCED TO THE GAME. THE LAST SERIOUS LEAGUE I PLAYED IN WOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE LATE 90'S AND I WAS USING A BLUE 14" BARREL EST AND HITTING 47/525 BALLS. JUST TRYING TO LEARN THE DIFFERENCES!! |

| April 17, 2015 Omar Khayyam 1357 posts | Of course, what DOERBAUM's question does not address is how bat after bat, year after year, can now be praised on this forum as the new HOTTEST bat, going 350 feet or more with a child's swing, carrying even mishit balls into the wild blue yonder. They are all tested at 1.21 maximum, right? I can understand a newer bat with better durability. But most posters are excited about how the new (fill in the blank) bat is the HOTTEST bat they've ever swung. And seniors spend more and more $$$$$$ on what is supposedly the same performance bat as those which have been manufactured for ten years. If true, obviously the testing standards have to be revised. I'd like to see how many of the composites in any team's dugout are still at 1.21 with the same testing a few months later. |
| April 18, 2015 Sparky.1 Men's 75 284 posts | and it's what I have eluded to for the past few years Omar...........The $$$$ between the Bat Manufactures and those in the "power seats" for Senior Ball have together, developed a "youth nectar" that is being sold to seniors to make them feel the power they never had in their hey-day. It's the same "power trip" that professional sports uses.......They pay each other a ton of $$$$$$ and we as fans, just keep on buying the tickets regardless of the cost. We the seniors are the ones that should take the blame because like cattle, "we just moo and move along" and keep spending the big bucks for bats, balls and tourneys because they are the only thing available and we are too scared or dumb to challenge what should be, an extension of our "recreational softball" of the past. They (bat manufactures & senior softball) keep pocketing the $$$$$ while we (the players) keep jumping through the hoops and opening up our wallets. |
