new umps
For Staff and TDs

I have found it common to have a new ump or an ump from another association who doesn't know our senior rules. They often just get an quick intro before the games start. Please let them know that if during the game, we inform him/her as to one of our rules, it is not an insult or meant to be demeaning. We just want to bring him/her up to speed to avoid confrontation as to the nature of our game. I can totally deal with a bad call. However, calls that go against the rules that senior softball have established is not right.

Gary, you are very correct. I present it to our umpires as "It is just like regular softball except..." because it is not that different. I also let them know that at least in the older divisions, they can pretty much watch the players as they do the right things almost automatically which will only help teach the umpire. I also tell them that while everyone appreciates the hustle to the bases that they should not stop watching home if someone is heading that way because if they mess up on senior rule at home that they will not be forgiven.

If you ever have an issue like this with an umpire, and I am at a location, please let me know, and I can help get them on our frequency. I am sure that other directors and UICs would feel the same.

UICs and TDs...

I'm sanctioned and worked in 5 assoc. ASA, NSA, GSL, ISA, USSSA.
Currently play in 50AAA. Would be interested in UMPing other levels if you require help. Even if I can just offer breaks for the guys to refresh themselves. Its tough working alot of games in a row.

Our sched is taking us to:

WI 0516
OH 0606
IA 0627
MI 0711
IN 0724
IL 0808
MO 0821
NV 1002

My services are available. Please contact me at richr@elitexpo.com
or 847.302.1000 to discuss any opportunities.

Rich, it would probably be better for you to contact the individual directors. Each tournament may be handled a little differently. I make some specific requests for the Brickyard that I give to a scheduler; Jerry usually brings his own crew for the ISA. Also I did not match up your dates, but there is no tournament July 24 in Indiana for SSUSA, but the ISA is July 31 in Columbus, Indiana.

Being an umpire and making the contacts should allow you to write off the mileage whether you end up doing games or not. Of course always check with your accountant. It looks like you have a lot of miles ahead of you. Feel free to contact me if you need any advice.

Thanks Nancy. I'll contact each director for each tourney we'll be competing at and discuss opportunities. And yes, I can write off mileage as I do now for local games.

I sure wish that you could have done the two games that the golf course grounds maintenance guy and I split Saturday night. I had a good game, but I try to stay off the diamond during the tournament. I always mention mileage because my two man partner had been umpiring thirty years and never realized it.

I am still concerned by Gary's comment because I tried to have the older, more experienced umpires in the first session and am hoping that he was treated correctly here. No one was a new umpire this year. I want to thank Tony Maxwell of Midwest for helping us get the umpires that we requested and filling in the gaps with umpires with experience. I also want to thank him for the work on the fields by his grounds crew.

Nancy. I was going to ask but didn't know if same division as us - plus I didn't have my gear. But would have stepped in. You did a real good job.

Thank you. I take a lot of pride in umpiring. It is also easier for me than a lot of the other things that have to be done for a tournament. I am guessing that you were up on the deck.

Always take your gear with you to be able to deduct your mileage. It is never your fault if you talk about doing games and are never scheduled any. I have had many trips to tournaments in Florida with our team that I was able to claim mileage for because of this; so I always talk with tournament directors and/or UICs before I travel. I have a wonderful CPA that watches out for me.
