Bat Thrown Out Of Tourney, Why Not Player????
A bat was taken from a player this weekend in Loudon County Va as the tournament director deemed it illegal. The end cap came off during a hit. The umpire looked down inside the bat saw "scrape" marks, took it to Director who walked over to First Base and questioned player. He saiid he saw scrape marks in the inside indicative of shaving. The batter denied it of course but was permitted to continue playing.
What is the rule governing illegal bats?

I thought I read about this once on this board. It seems to me they ban the player from the association and the team manger too. I can see the player banned but why the team manager? The team manager may NOT EVEN KNOW his player had an illegal bat.

The procedural aspects of handling a suspected altered bat are described in SSUSA Official Rulebook §3.4(6) on page 16 ... The bat will be submitted to an independent entity for inspection and testing ... If it is determined to be an altered bat, then the provisions of that rules section will be applied ... It's inappropriate to impose penalties prior to a confirmation that a violation has, in fact, occurred ...

KGB,

A bat was removed from play at Phillip Bolen Park on Friday after the end cap came out. That bat has been sent to the Sacramento office for further evaluation.

IF we are talking about the same bat / same situation, I can assure you that no SSUSA staff member walked to the 1B area to speak with the player during that game and no SSUSA staff member deemed the bat to be altered. As staff pointed out in his post, I coud not impose a penalty on without confirmation.

The end cap came out during play. That is the ONLY statement that I made about the bat. I did not (and would not) make any comment on the interior status of the bat to any person at the park. Doing so would have been It would have been completely inappropriate.

Tim, does this mean that from now on any bat that has the end cap come off during a game will be sent to Sacramento or was there something unusual about this particular occurrence?

If it is somebody playing 50 M plus. I have the feeling that he is guilty as sin assuming that it is the person that I think might be.

By any chance is this player on a team based in Florida but he lives in NJ?

Gentlemen ... We're not going to "try this case in the media" ... If there is anything that comes out of the investigation that results in further action on our part, it will be disclosed appropriately ... In the meantime, this type of speculation is counter-productive ...
