Handicaping teams when playing out of age group

Hi Folks:

First off I want to say I have a lot of respect for SSUSA and appreciate the job they do putting on tournaments.
We are playing in a tournament on the west coast in a couple weeks and will be the only team entered (60M) in our age and rating so we will be playing 55AAA teams. When we play 55's we will be using their HR rule plus most likely runs or 11 fielder. My question is since we are the only team in our bracket why can't we just go in as an exhibition team and play the younger guys strait up and use at least our HR rule. This is an important tournament because it is a qualifier but since we really have nobody to play equal why do we have to be the team that is handicapped?

Thank You:

James

James ... I guess you COULD play "Exhibition" and play all of your games under 60-M rules in Portland ... There's precedent for that happening at the Jim Sherman Memorial Northwest Championships ... The NW Legends (50-M+) played on that basis last year, going 4-1 (only loss to 55-Major+ Goodman Racing 55's) before being washed out the bottom of the elimination bracket ...

That is an option offered to every "singleton" team in any tournament, but ALMOST ALL teams resist playing "Exhibition" because it precludes them from earning awards or a Tournament of Champions bid ... Those may or not be important to your ball club, but if that's what your team would like to do, please have your Manager call and let us know in the next day or so ... We can certainly accommodate your request to just play five games and depart following your 6:30 PM game Saturday evening ... Thanks!

60M plays against 55AAA even. No handicap should be given, your inclusion with 55AAA adjusts your skill level to AAA. 55M would have to give 55AAA the handicap.

Thanks for the quick response SSUSA.

You answered my question. I do remember the Legends doing this and leaving a day early. Will leave it up to the coach but we will probably keep it as scheduled. It is still fun playing the younger teams but it is an uphill battle when they get the early advantage before a pitch is even thrown.

Thanks:

James

PoolShark ... In the context of James' initial question, teams playing down in a younger age group play those games "straight up", but most of them perceive that as the "handicap", which includes [1] lesser HR limits and the [2] effects of age vs. youth! ... We were clear on the theory and fairness of his inquiry ... Thanks!
