Know your Rules
Our team was at Syracuse this past weekend. Tournament was nicely run, the competition was good, weather great, nice to see others we previously played and other than for the fact we lost every game ( we didn't hit or field which is a bad combo- lol) we had a great time. The question came up in our final game when a batter on1st pitch swung, tipped it, went straight back and caught by catcher. Umpire ruled him out. He, the other team and one of the teams watching said the rule of it having to go above batters head was changed several years ago. Our manager said no, should just be a foul ball. There was about a five minute delay (no sure what transpired) but he was finally ruled out. ps -game wasn't that close at the time. After the game, he checked with the TD and was informed of the rule 1.29 which says must be above head so should have been just a strike.

My point- managers need to know the rules for the various tournaments becasue different associations, umps, etc. vary.

Many players, umps etc get the SSUSA rules and ASA rules confused. They are basically the same with some small differences and this being one of them. In ASA he would be out.
