Pete Mercer
To all my softball brothers-
It is with a heavy heart that I must let everyone know that Pete Mercer, one of our Boaz/ASI teammates, has been involved in a tragic work accident.
He was helping his son at a construction site and was in a hole that caved in and snapped his spinal cord. He is on life support but his family is considering taking him off.

Please join me in praying for Pete and his family in this time of unbelievable pain for them.

Sometimes we get busy with our everday lives and with the strong desire of winning, that we forget just how precious and short life can be....I am certain that with myself and with many others, Pete will be in our prayers. Please keep us posted of anything positive. Tell the family not to give up...miracles DO happen. I told my doctor that I would give him the utmost respect, once the doctors took the word PRACTICE out of their job discription. Keep the faith.....

Pete left this world for a Better Place this past Saturday. Please join me in continuing to pray for Pete's wife, LaVerne, family, friends and loved ones as we all try to cope with the unexpected loss of our teammate and friend.

Larry...I met you at my Dad's funeral service a few weeks back. You have no idea how much it meant to our family for you guys to attend! I always knew my Daddy was a very special person who had an impact on many people's lives; I just didn't realize the extent until the awful tragedy occurred. My brother & I appreciate your prayers & support.

At the graveside service, a man approached me & told me that my Daddy would be inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer. Do you happen to know who this man was or how I can contact him to find out when the induction will occur? Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again...Sonya Mercer Tripp & Jeff Mercer, LA

You may want to check out the Senior Softball Hall of Fame website, SSHOF.com
Maybe there is contact info there.
Sorry for your loss.

Pete will be inducted in Kansas City (actually Liberty) Mo at the SPA nationals on Friday July 13th. I dont believe its 100 percent for friday but if it isnt it will be Saturday. A great ceremony will be held at the park and believe me, teammates and friends will be numerous. Your father is greatly missed and the team constantly prays for Lavern and all of the Mercer clan. Your father is where he prepared to be for so many years. He was an inspiration to all who knew him.
Call me or Keith Parker at 903 759 9421 at our Texas Half Century offices for more details.

Sonya, it was a pleasure meeting you in spite of the sadness of the funeral. The man who spoke to you was probably Ridge Hooks, Executive Director of the Senior Players Association (SPA).

The infomation Jim Cary provided is on point. However, if you would like to contact the Senior Softball Hall of Fame directly, they can be reached at 405/463-3317. Their website is www.sshof.com.

Again, as Jim says, the team and my wife, Pam, and I, continue to keep LaVerne and the entire family in our thoughts and prayers. Pete is missed by all who knew him.

Thank you all for the information. I have spoken to Ridge Hooks & he let me know that the ceremony will be held on July 14 in Liberty, MO. I have also spoken with Keith Parker. I will do whatever is necessary to obtain the required information. Ya'll just let me know what I need to do! I'll be there...wouldn't miss is for the world!!

As I expressed to Keith, Jeff & I would love to have copies of any pictures that you have of Daddy playing ball. We have some of him when he was younger, but we don't have any of him playing in recent years. I watched him play at some of the local tournaments, but those of you who knew my Daddy know that he "ran his mouth" just a little bit (HA) to intimidate the other teams...& I tended to cover my eyes & grit my teeth alot , afraid he was going to get hurt. I told Jeff that now that Daddy is in Heaven, he can hit & run like he did when he was 20. We both laughed at that & said that to hear Daddy tell it, he was better at 60 than he was at 20; at 60 he had MASTERED hitting it over the fence so that he didn't HAVE to run the bases.

Thank you again for all of your prayers & kind words. If you have stories or pictures that you'd be willing to share, please contact me at Sonya.Tripp@Voith.com or 318-680-1719.
