Does your team pick tournaments they think they can win, or do you try to go to the tournaments with the most teams?
Obviously, at least two theories here. Some say go to tournaments you can win and pick up HoF votes. Others say lets go to the tournaments with the best competition. What is your teams philosophy. If it is the latter than lets post right now what tournaments your team is going to and maybe we can have a big turnout at some of these tournaments. Below is ours for both the 50 major plus and the 55 major plus.

Feb 23-25 Hollis 55 Winter Haven, FL ToC Won
March 23-25 Hollis 55 Winter Haven, FL SSUSA Got Killed
May 20-29 Hollis 50/55 Maui, Hawaii

July 13-15 Hollis 55 Kansas City, KA SPA National

Hi Audie. Just curious. Do the players pay their own travel and lodging expenses or does the sponsor cover some of those? I think the expense of traveling that much is what deters most teams from attending that many tournaments.

I played on a 50+ Team last year that is now a 55+ team. We usually fly twice a year and drive to the rest. So our main concern for the fly tournaments was how many different teams might we see and how did the tournament people treat us. On the drive tournaments it was how many teams would be there and could everyone make that weekend. We try not to paly in back to back weekends but every year we seem to paly at least once back to back.

We'll won a tournament this year (TOC) that only had three teams. Not much fun (except with the guys on my team) to see the same two teams for three days.

There should be more teams at your tournaments now.
The new ratings went into effect yesterday. Check the ratings list. I counted 27 major plus in the 55's. Don't know if
all of these teams still exist.

You must have a great sponsor ?,I charge my players a x amount of dollars at the beginning of the year ( we play in 10 tourneys each year) but we can not go all of them, and most of my players do not want to travel that much,( about 2 tourneys a month starting in June is enough) we chose the tourneys for a couple of reasons, they are close, they are well ran, they go by the ratings and do check the rosters,
I think the best reason for going to certain tourneys is the teams will be in the right divison, so you know you will at least have a chance to win, who wants to pay a lot of money with no chance, I think this reason does keep a lot of teams from entering a certain tourney.
We play in Indianapolis, IN, South Bend, IN, Columbus, IN, all qualifiers
then, Midwest Champioships, Champiagn,Il, NSA Worlds, Boaz Alabama, Eastern nationals, Elgin, Ill, a Labor day tourney (local), in Columbus,Ind,
SPA Nationals, Dalton ,Georgia, LVSSA, Wolrds,Las Vegas, in late Sept and either winter Worlds in Pensacola or Ft.Myers, have not decided yet, plus we play in a coupl of Kid tourneys to stay sharp ,plus a in the young guys league every Weds nigth, from May till Nov.

This keeps the cost down for us, keeps the wife happy, still get to see the grandkids on the weekends and the grass mowed. and we get in about 80 plus games a year, this is a good schedule. and that makes us happy.
The cost for all of my schedule is well over $3500.00, we could go to any more if we wanted too, no one will sponsor teams for that kind of money here, I know, i hatried to find them, we do get a coupl of hundred dollars to help, but that is about it, so it is up to our players to divey up the entry fees.

I know this was a winded note, but I feel most teams are like mine and do it the same way for the same reasons, hard to compete with big money, thats is why you do not see a lot of terams at each tourney, they can only go to so many.

When we set our schedule the first thing we look at is how much money do we have to spend and where can we get the most bang for our buck. This year we have 3 business men contributing so that one business (man) is not burdened to the hilt. However, when we travel and there is only one or two teams in our division it makes us question why we are there.

Our sponsors pay for the motels, $150/man/flight and entry fees. We split it between the 50 and 55s so that one team is not overly traveling to the point of missing life. However, several of the better 55s play on both teams. We also play twice a month in the Florida state tournaments (FHC & FSL). I just hope that there are plenty of teams in St Louis, Wisconsin, Kansas, Phoenix, etc. I know there will be plenty in Burlington, Vegas and Florida. Most of us want to play the best competition possible, even if it means we finish last. That just encourages us to get better.

I threw this out here to hopefully encourage others to disclose their plans so that if we are going to a small tournament we can change our plans before flights are booked and entry fees paid.

Down in Florida we play against other Florida teams at just about ever tournament and we would love to play those great teams from California, Oregon, Minnesota, Jersey, Texas, Vegas, Detroit, Colorado, Ohio more often. Last year our 50s played under the name Specialty Tank and the 55s played under the name Allstate Miken. This year the 50s will be Hollis Appraisals/Railtrusts and the 55s will be Hollis Appraisals/Combat

We play in the ones that are expected to have the most competition... quality and quantity. We'd rather play the best teams.
We also expect to be treated well. We don't care where they are but we do care about the track record of the assn that sponsors each event (track record = number of 55 major + teams that usually go to their national event). We will play in Reno, NV: Liberty, MO; Mankato, Mn; LV, NV and Phoenix, AZ.
HOF points are not really a driving force for us... it's about the games themselves. We look forward to seeing you again in MO, AZ & NV.

Sal:
Less than half of the 55 major + teams are... a) not in existence -both GSF and Golden State Fasteners are listed and they are one and the same... Academy Sports is no longer a 55 team... American Metal Recyling and Frank N' Stein had some of the same guys on it, probably not two teams... there are other ones like this.... b) not really major + teams... some of which will likely be re-rated or won't play.
It will be nice though if we do see as many as 8-10 teams in one of the nationals.

Old South/Miken, All State/Miken and Faith are no longer together. It's time for some house cleaning in the ratings web pages.

In Indiana 55's the Travelodge 55's , are the only 55 major / major Plus team, The Indiana Legends are the only 55 AAA/Major, they are not the Web Auto team either, Indy Fog is the only AA team, this is all of the teams at this time, all the other teams listed in the ratings are no longer playing or have moved up to next division. so there are only 3 teams in the 55's from Indiana that travel tothe 55's Nnational tourneys

In the 50's the only Indiana team in the 50 Major/Major Plus is the Travelodge 50's, also known as Travelodge Bears, Travelodge 55's,Direct Hire, Campbell trucking, Indiana Legends.,Riverside paving

Midwest Express is listed as a 50's Indiana Major team , but i think they have more Chicago and Michigan players then Indiana players, but i could be wrong.

Brickyard Bombers and the Indiana Classics are the only AAA teams now, there are no AA at this time that I know of, all other teams listed as Indiana teams are disbanded or moved up. So there are only 4 teams listed as Indiana teams that travel to the 50's National tourneys

If someone from each state would take a look and report about the teams from thier state , maybe the rating board would not have 458 teams listed in the 50's and I would guess that there are not a 100 teams that are actually active and play in the 7 or 8 national tourneys, and that is probably a high estimate ,probably closer to 50 teams.

If you know of any teams that disbanded , or are under another name, moved up to next division, please list them here, maybe if a enough of us do this they will finally redo the ratings list, Thanks, Rabbitt

Kentucky has the following teams that play in National Tourneys.
50's---AA Zepplin AAA---OG's, Ol School,
55's--AA Zepplin AAA---Star Drywall (Metro Star)
Major----Jim & Joes(also known as Williams,Roof Concepts)
How difficult is it to keep up with current teams in the ratings. If a team is not registered with SPA or SSUSA or played in a national tournament in the other associations then they should be removed from the ratings. Like Rabbit said there are probably less than 100 teams that play the national tournaments.
