Courtesy runners slowing the game down
Haven't played in that many senior only events but this past weekend I really noticed that the unlimited use of courtesy runners really slowing games down. I am not a fan of curtesy running anyway and it seemed to go to new heights this weekend maybe I was just cranky. I may have even mentioned this a time or time two to a an unsuspecting fellow player who took a courtesy runner, hopefully they took it as constructive criticism. Anyone else not a fan of the courtesy runner.

lecak- i think most players would rather run for themselves. but in certain situations, when the game is on the line, or trying to avoid the double play , the manager makes the decision. i have seen players get mighty upset when replaced, but next time they run, they get thrown out at 3rd or home plate. if the rules allow it, so be it. frank a, texas greyhounds 65's.

How about 2-3 an inning in some cases and times where a guy legs out a double and then takes a runner.

No runner after the 1st pitch to the next batter. If the next batter gets a hit he has to get a runner before the next pitch and all runners ahead of him have to run for themselves.

We all have a choice between senior softball and the other, non-age based, games. If we don't like the rules of one we might wish to consider the other.
I don't know how long you've been playing senior ball. I began about 10 years ago and I wasn't wild about courtesy runners then. But it's part of the game... so much so that it's one of the few rules that all assns use.
However, the thought of imposing some guidelines might be worth exploring (i.e. cannot do so after 1 pitch). Recognize though that the point in allowing them is to enable people to play longer and to avoid aggravating an injury. I personally would hate to see us lose sight of this.

The courtesy runner rule is a very good thing. The problem is most teams don't plan ahead. For the most part, our team plans ahead who will run for who and most of the time the pinch runner is on first as the next batter steps into the box. If your team is beat up and needs a bunch of runners in a game, try and get the 1st base dugout. This will help speed up the switches.

I agree w\ Gary H. But I have seen the 1st base only DR in tourneys as well.
Planning ahead of time saves time, as does the 1st base limitation. But if someone needs one or the game could depend on a better runner, that also has it's place.
