Called out for carrying the bat
In last night's over 50 league game I got called out for carrying the bat to 1st base. The reason I carried it is that I was distracted with a pulled muscle that had me hopping down to 1st.

The ump offered to show me the rule and I don't know why I didn't take him up on the offer.

Dear Jetboy,

I don't have the latest copy of the SS-USA rule book but I can tell you what the rule is for the ASA.

It is covered under the "Umpire's Points of Emphasis" section under Number 52, which states:

52. Throwing or Carrying a Bat. If a player throws the bat intentionally in anger, the player should be ejected from the game. If the bat slips from the batter's hands, there is no penalty unless the discarded bat prevents the defense from making a play on the ball, and interference should be ruled. There is no penalty when a player carries a bat to first or any other base. Should the player use the bat to prevent a defensive player from making a play, then interference should be ruled.

That's the ASA rule and under it you should not have been called out. Maybe someone else will post the rule for SSUSA.

Hope that helps.

In NSA, ISA, and USSSA, if you carry the bat to first and touch the bag with the bat in your hand, you are out. It bit the Pensacola Hitmen a few years ago in the NSA World Series on a game that I umpired. Actually they found about every odd NSA rule in two games to get out on.

Let me add: the umpire did apologize to me during the game for the bad call. He looked it up between innings. Of course that was to late to do anything about the out.
