Aug. 3, 2007 VegasPaul Men's 70 31 posts | Courtesy Runner If a courtesy runner is in the game and on base for the second time in an inning can he be called out after a pitch is thrown? Some say yes and some say no. Is it an appeal play or protest of the rules? Also if the courtesy runner, running for a second time scores, can he be called out after scoring the run? SSUSA rules say if a "courtesy runner is found running more than once per inning he will be called out". It doesn't address appeal before the next pitch or scoring a run. |

If a courtesy runner is determined illegal, he will be called out upon touching the base..." I had to make the call once in Phoenix when someone had a senior moment. This is one reason why everyone should check with their own scorekeeper before they ever go out and touch a bag as a courtesy runner. |

Aug. 3, 2007 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | Well, that's a big statement especially with all the different sets of rules out there, but I forget (forgot) which one we were speaking of.... but your right. |
Aug. 10, 2007 olddog 4 posts | when a runner has been run for, then he attempts to become a courtesy runner in the same inning he is out but it it an appeal or does the umpire call this on his wn? |
Aug. 10, 2007 Tater50 Men's 60 336 posts | Umps do not always remember who runs, so the team should appeal. Olddog: I think I am right here: but anybody can courtesy run one time in an inning; even though someone runs for me, I can turn around & run for someone else in the same inning. A courtesy runner on base cannot be replaced by another CR. Kathy M.; the wife of one of our players on the JAH Team caught many offenders when she kept score. The way we did was: at the bottom of the page under each inning courtesy runners were noted as such..........9/33, meaning that 9 CR's for 33. This way, you keep CR info per inning. Faith Electric got caught twice in this situation. Hope this helps. Tater50 John W. Hayes |
Aug. 10, 2007 DaveDowell Men's 70 4295 posts | Tater ... A controversial 'courtesy runner' issue came up at last year's Winter Nationals in Ft. Myers where I was the T.D. ... It actually forced me to look in the rule book! ... You are right about anyone on the lineup card being able to be a courtesy runner, but that's at the start of the inning only ... As things play out, some restrictions may appear ... Such as: A courtesy runner may not be used to replace a courtesy runner (absent an injury circumstance) still on base, per Rule 13.4(3) ... And there is a related prohibition at Rule 13.4(2) which says "A runner who is replaced with a courtesy runner may not be used as a courtesy runner for the remainder of the inning." ... As for the mechanics of the offense, and therefore the remedy, one of our rule book authors told me that the 'illegal' courtesy runner may be called out whwever it comes to the attention of the umpire that he is in fact illegally running, and is still on base at the time of the discovery ... Hope this helps! ... DAVE |
Aug. 10, 2007 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | Last week at the USSSA Nationals in Wi, we appealed a courtesy runner and the umpire said that he was operating under an honor system, meaning we couldn't appeal! If we're playing under an honor system, why do we need umpires? |
Aug. 10, 2007 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | Dave, Your correct, but if what the author said in not in the book, there is no rule...per se. Also, perhaps this one & other rules need to be looked at where the illegal act must be brought up before the first pitch occures after that infraction. Rules CAN NOT be implied, taken for granted, there is No Honor system, Rules have no have intent, Rules have connon sence, and I might be able to come up with others. I do not think any of those just mentioned have a page, rule section, or can be found. They need to be specific and straight forward with the Effect of that violation stated as well. $0.02 |
