There is a way to "test" wall thickesses. An ultrasound hand held device. Cost vary depending on just how accurate you want them, and maker. They work on metal and composite bats. I have seen and used them. This process only taked a minute or so, to testing for shaved bats & would not really hold up a game.
Something to consider if directors want to invest in a device like it.
They work just like the utrasound devices used for checking babies in the womb as well as for fish, locaters.

taits: I visited the Miken plant while in MN. for the USSSA world last year and they have a device that would test the flex on a composite barrell to make sure they stay within set peramerters. I won't swear to it but i think USSSA also has a similar device ready to use if a composite bat is challenged. I do know that there will be a USSSA official in Panama City whose sole responsibility will be to perform the USSSA field test on any bat that is challenged at that event. They have the results from the actual test that was performed on all bat's when they passed the BPF 1.2 test. They will know the precise balance point, the amount of flex in the barrell on composite bats and wall thickness of all aluminum bats if need be. The device your talking about might be something that would work as well. It is just good to know that they will be there to enforce a real good long overdue rule. The most sastifying way to win a world championship is by doing it with your natural talent and legal equipment. Thanks for bringing this up and i look forward to other opinions on this subject.

I hope the USSSA guy brings one of these devices. I'd like to see a scientific way of testing bats rather than someone talking trash about certain bats and players. It will be interesting to see when and if challanges are made. I am looking forward to Panama City.

I still worry about a bat that was manufactured just out of specs. Maybe they will have some altered bats there and demo the device.
See you there!

Bruce, I am with you. I work at resin/composite manufacturing facitily and I know from experience that product will leave this facility witha great plus or minus factor depending the customer. For instance, the product bagging machines for a large customer is 50lbs on the nose for others it is 50lbs plus or minus 3oz. Also the quality of the product will vary. I could see team sponsored equipment being "right on the money", but routine production and quality control could be another story. To all organizations, test the bats and ball but be sure that the manufactures specifications are correct.

Personally I say good. I have thought that some of the Miken sponsored teams are swinging bats that most of us can not buy off the shelves. That way we will find out. They will be challanged.
