De Moines format
What are your views on SSWS format of not ranking teams and letting them play down to the next division. Understand there was some REAL sloppy play in some games.

The format stinks and has always stunk. It encourages teams to lose on purpose and some teams are getting good at hiding the losses. If Ken Maas would only listen to some of the suggestions he would have far more entries. We proposed that a team could only drop 1 class from their current ranking which would allow a AAA or AA Team to possibly win his lower division. It would also encouage lower ranked teams to participate.

What is the purpose of rankings, if Major+ can play 3A, and or Major play 2A teams. If they must combine divisions it would be more fair for Major and Major+ to be upper, and 3A and 2A to play lower.

SSWS dosn't rate teams. They think they should play themselves into the correct level. Heard that during one of there games,it was stopped by a director who thought that both teams were doing what they could to lose and told the mgr's that she would let the winning team pick, there div. Then they played all out. Would like to know if anyone can verify that.

I heard that same thing from more than 1 person (and team) I also heard that either the SSWS or the umpires confiscated some bats that were suspect of being altered, any thruth to that? thanks Bob

Bob,I know there was a bat pulled in the 55's. Illegal bats, tanking games not a good thing. My guess is that SSWS dosn't want to recognise the other organizations rankings. It would be great to get an explanation.

There is a lot of history between the SSWS and some of the other associations. The SSWS is looked upon as the Maverick associations because he allows the three player rule, which is a good rule by the way much better than what we are about to do and the format.

While I agree there is some sandbagging going on in the SSWS world and why I do not understand these are also good people who have been running this type of tournament for a long time.

As far as the one bat goes (the only one taken) the use of painted bats has been going on to a small degree in every association this time someone caught it. I know of one person who is testing the associations to see if they can catch the painted bat. So far in 4 of the first 5 worlds no one has said anything and the bat has been checked.

This painted bat stuff would be a mute point if the associations would do three things. 1. Go by the 1.2 BPF standard. As Mike Kelly said next year all bat companies will sign the stupid NSA contract so the only problem we should have with bats is the really stupid ASA rules (which by the way they really do not care about slow pitch or senior softball)
2. Use a 44/525 compression softball. While I love the idea of having two softballs for different weather conditions the TD's will not invest in this so just go to one standard softball that is fair for everyone and that is the 44/525 softball. It is also a very safe ball.
3. Have a player list and allow teams to pick up one or two players from outside their region. Once again this would keep the Major and Major Plus players from playing on AAA, which is what is planned for next year. Also all the associations should go by one team rating system. Yes some teams will try to petition down but that is easy to take care of.

The SSWS should use some type of team rating system and go with 4 divisions. Major Plus, Major, AAA and AA. In the round robins everyone plays each other that way the lower divisions teams can gage themselves by playing the upper divisions teams but these games would only count for seeding purposes in the two categories that will make up the tournament. Major Plus and Major. Everyone starts out in the MP divisions and you have one drop down and then the AAA and AA division with the same format used. If you win the tournament you must move up the next year.

This stuff is simple but no one wants to listen to what is going on. Instead they have their problems that carry over to the players. If these three things were followed everyone would be happy and the game would become fun again.

Don't forget that SSWS format has unlimted runs per inn, no time limted and thank goodness for a mercy rule, games could & have gotten real ugly in the amunt of runs put up betwwen a Major + team and a AAA or Major team. Bob

I like the idea that we can play "real softball" and not have all the BS (5 runs per inning, etc), but the format does in fact cause teams to lose on purpose. During one of our games a player from the other team stated that they would forfeit the game if they were in the lead in the last inning. Just let major and major plus teams play against each other and AAA & AA play each other.
