Sliding In 65 League
Just informed by my mgr that next year will usher in the age of sliding. No runby\'s for 2nd and 3rd. In a 50\'s league, I might understand this, but this has to be the most meatheaded softball rules idea of the century.

What are they thinking of? Not enough injuries on the field? Sure glad I\'m not an infielder and also that I could still slide if I felt like it, but I\'d rather see the previous rule.

Terry, what association do you play in? We play SSWC, NSA, and SPA, and we are not allowed to over-run second or third without the penalty of potentially being tagged out. It seems to me that over-running just puts one more problem on the umpire's judgement of intentional or not. Like SSWC, in our leagues, we can not slide into first or home without being out. One of my main jobs at each tournament is to figure out what set of ground rules we go by because not only do you deal with the rules of the association but also park or tournament rules. I think that it gets harder to adjust as we get older sometimes.

Nancy,
We play in southern Oregon and I don't know who the governing body is. This is my first year with this team and I was pretty happy playing last year in a 50+ league that did not allow sliding. I understand the team plays in Sr. Games at St. George, Utah at the end of the season and that the ruling body made changes to be in line with that venue.

I hear what you're saying about making the umpire's job harder, but I'd rather have a couple bad calls than a broken ankle - my thinking runs along those lines anyway.

I umped a few games (we're too cheap to pay 'em) in the 50+ league and the calls at 2nd for interference were probably the most contentious I made or did not make depending on whose team was bitching about the call.

When I first heard about the runby 2nd/3rd, I thot it sounded pretty mickey mouse, but after playing in it and seeing very few injuries to runners or basemen, I changed my mind. I hope the governing body does likewise.

Terry,
I play in a senior league in Texas. In our league we play with the run through rule. We have players of all ages. Many of the players in our league are what I would term casual players who play league ball only and maybe only once a week. Some have come back to the game after not having played for several years. Some of these guys just don't have the game savy to know when to get out of the way. I would rather take my chances sliding then risk a full speed collision with another player. Players who don't want to slide always have the option of a controlled stand up approach to the base.
