New Rule Changes
Dear SSUSA Staff...
As a Manager of a 50 Major squad, I think it would be nice of you guys to ask us (Team Representatives) of our opinions, prior to your desired rule changes. If you want us to participate in your tournaments and pay the ever-increasing entry fees, wouldn't you want to gear your association to our wishs? Your "Up th Middle" rule only applies to a pitcher in a wheel chair that CAN"T move out of the lane and now with HR's as outs after fulfilling the quotta, oh boy! This is going to change those elivated swings into line drive missles, some of which are going to end up in the middle. Was this your intent? Or, maybe it's the price of balls and the retrieval that's got you upset. Your missing the point. Most of us played ball when it was a game, not a business. Only my opinion, though.

Esteemed Mr. Johnny Hose:
Thanks for asking the $64K question. Why are rule changes instituted without at least soliciting input from us, the customers? From other posts, nobody wants the "out" option after the home run limit is reached. That's what we'll be stuck with, however, if SSUSA refuses to consider the overwhelming sentiment against this aspect of the new rule. Why not poll team managers via email or some other response mechanism when rule changes are considered? Limit the comment period and use a questionnaire like the one used in the Major Plus task force. It works, we're paying customers, so include us in the process. Taxation (dues, fees, etc.) without representation, still a bad policy.

Vinny LV:
In response to your two suggestions, here are my answers:
1) Play ball - will do, last year my team, Evolution, which I played for, managed, and partially sponsored, played 10 SSUSA events, total entry fee cost $3,700. I expect my team for 2009, OLR Nighthawks, will play about the same amount. For 7 tears I've been a loyal, paying SSUSA customer. It's the best senior softball organization which I will continue to support

2) quit bitching - (your term) I'm going to pass on that one. By my math SSUSA will collect at least $1.4 million in 2009 from players on 853 mens teams in the form of team fees, player dues, and tournament fees. At 15 players per team that is almost 13,000 participants in the men's division alone. With that many participants and that kind of money, I firmly believe we, the players, deserve more input on how our game is played. I have no problem with a central rule making organization and recognize that I may not like every last rule. I do, however, object to the arbitrary nature of how decisions are currently made and handed down by SSUSA. It is easy enough to distribute proposed rules for comment from managers BEFORE the final decisions is made. I was on the Major Plus task force and that is how it worked. Who knows best how rules affect our game? The players, IMHO. That wisdom is certainly not exclusive to a select few (one?) in Sacramento, CA. I, for one, will continue to play SSUSA AND demand accountability and customer service where I choose to spend my recreation dollars.

I still can't help but wonder whom or who will be making the call as to what teams will be affected ( moved up ) and on what bases. Past performance ? or on rosters who no one ever seems to check or teams left alone because of who is on the roster.

We all love playing softball, some like myseft, like hitting a little more. Whats our recourse ? not play SS-USA ?
MAYBE ?

Most people are missing the point of the ss-usa. They made the rules to try and make it fair and competitive for all teams, it has nothing to do about money. We are not going to change the bats because players that normally dont hit homeruns can hit one and career 400 hitters become 600 hitters so i am for playing 11 players on defense as a way to protect the pitcher. Everone seems to complain about what they want so maybe we as players need to start a players assoc. to try and deal with the players concerns. Just a thought.

Don,
Thanks for your thoughts. They are right on. As managers, our responsibilities are representative of our players and our sponsors not to mention all the crap in between. We typically do not wish to move backwards and constatly try to improve. With that said, we sell our club and our players a package that significantly applies to how we play the game. I've crossed paths with you and your club, I know and respect the quality ball you play. Individuals and/or players hardly ever understand what it takes to field that team. Simply protecting that quality is a full time job! Any changes and especially ones that effect the type of team you have spent years in organizing, can be devistating. That's what SSUSA has not taken into consideration when they force these changes.
Sorry to ramble.
Seriously, Johnny Hose.
