Sliding; Not recommended for Me
In 2000 the Faith Electric team went to the ISSA in Manassas. In our first game, I hit an easy double for anyone else, but I decided to put on the burned out burners & make second. (I am about 6'3"). As I slid into second with shorts on, the base broke away, the ground up brick particles (I think) chewed into my right thigh & turned it into hamburger meat. (about a 6X8" area). One of the famed Senior Softballers told me to put Preparation H on it; my roomy, Dan, said I work with Whitehall pharmaceutical & I do not think that is a good idea, should have listened to Dan & should have gone to the emergency room. Well, it took many weeks to heal; anyway, here is what I wrote about it.

Softball 3:16- John Shalt Not Slide

As I left home towards first base
I increased my speed picked up the pace
As I turned left I got real tough
I‚ll slide into second & take the rough
I landed & bounced & jarred my gut
Skinning my body from ankle to butt
It removed my skin & began to hurt
Filled with rocks, blood & dirt
I left the game & went to eat
Forgot the pain for tasty treats
It crusted over & then that night
I could not sleep with all my might
I tumbled & tossed & could not sleep
With one leg exposed from hip to feet
One person told me use a special oil
It turned my eyes red & made me boil
So, I‚ll just sit back, I‚ll let it heal
For all remedies given, left me with a horrible feel
Five days have gone since I lost my hide
Next time I‚ll keep Sliding emotions inside

John, you should have put NuSkin on it. It won't burn. . . much.

Loved your poem Tater!

My sentiments are very similar. Running out a double is not the problem. It's those delusions of granduer when you decide to "go for it" that get you in trouble. When it's gonna be close and it dawns on you that "yeah, I can make it all right, but I can't stop without sliding". Sound familiar?

I've spent a few of nights where my leg is stuck to the sheets or the office when the my pants are stuck to my leg.

Keep telling yourself, "It's a good kind of sore" Uh, huh.

Clever poem Tater! ... I play in a Rec. league where running thru the bases is allowed (and encouraged), even though sliding is permissible, too ... I like it!

As a concession to my aging body, and despite my mind still (incorrectly?) insisting that I still 'have the wheels to get there', the new motto is "If in doubt, forget it, old fella" ...

For the times I've ignored that motto, cold beer seems to be as effective in stopping the pain as about anything else! ... DAVE
