April 20, 2009 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | Indy Brickyard Although the Midwest has not yet turned over the names of all of the teams entered in the Brickyard, I know that with today's mail that there are about 35 teams and hope to have the entries soon. There is still time to enter as Timmy does the brackets the same week as the tournament. So if you still want in, please call the ballpark (317-875-8833). Information about the park and hotels, etc are on their website, www.midwestsportscomplex.com. I know that I have had a lot of major/major plus teams call me that have not been in before; so I am hoping that we have more teams in that division than last year (12 teams last year). As always if you have a question, you can call me (317-510-6310). Remember to welcome Timmy, the SSWC director for Indy, to senior softball. He turns 50 this year, and he and his brothers and friends are playing at Metro. |
April 20, 2009 amr-4-lc 47 posts | will the teams in the tournament be listed @ some point, or is there some way to see (website, etc ...) who exactly is playing in this tournament and the breakdown of the divisions for the teams entered. |

April 21, 2009 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | I am supposed to get to look at the entries any day; so I will be putting any information here as soon as I get it. Brett, Timmy does take entries until the day he makes the brackets which will be the Wednesday before the tournament. JC24, I will make sure that they show both teams for you. |
April 24, 2009 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | Thanks, Terry. I just got a list of the teams so far from Midwest, and I have not had time to go through them, but I want to put out what they gave me for you to help me see if they need any changes or if anyone has been left out. I have not been through ratings yet or checked spelling; so any input is appreciated on typos I may have been given. 50s Coors Light St. Louis Sting Taylor's Dawgs Milwaukee Merchants Windy City Team Arkansas American Metal DeClaire Insurance Maudy's Bar & Grill Kansas City Barons Chicago Prime Detroit Jags Brickyard 50 55s Schones K.C. April 26, 2009 amr-4-lc 47 posts | what is the status of each team listed in the 50's bracket? are they all major? are they a mixed bag of major and major+. will the 2 divisions be combined @ the tournament, or will they play seperate? any help would be great. good luck to all teams in this tourney. |
April 27, 2009 Brett Men's 55 239 posts | amr-4-lc, each team's rating can be found under the Ratings link located at the top of the page. |
April 27, 2009 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | Metro Stars is also in the 50s. Timmy does the brackets, but I went through all the teams to get the correct ratings. A couple of teams were not in the ratings listed on SSWC, and the office at Midwest did not have ratings on many teams (this is their first year for this). There will not be any AA or AAA teams playing the upper echelon teams. It will depend on the final counts, of course, and what they are on how he makes the brackets as a round robin or a regular pool play then bracke. 6 of each would make a round robin; so the 60s so far are 6 AA teams which is perfect, but others may need to use pool play and then elimination brackets. Timmy has been doing brackets for 25 years and this qualifier since 2000, and I try to keep the ratings right for him and you; so we should have a pretty good idea of how to break them up after the mail Wednesday, and he will do the right thing to get the games. Hopefully you will like the results of this. The weather report looks good, and the Major and Major Plus teams are coming in full force; so there should be some great competition. |

April 29, 2009 Corky Men's 55 451 posts | Hey Nancy.........You might let the teams know that you have waived the HR and DBO (HR's doubles after limit) rule for this qualifier. It might encourage more teams to enter. The weather is supposed to be 65 and sunny all weekend. Good Luck to those coming to INDY. |
April 29, 2009 Brett Men's 55 239 posts | Corky, are you saying the home run rules for the 50 major division will 5, then 1-up, and extras will be doubles? |
April 29, 2009 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | One up's as doubles are a very nice new twist to the debate on the HR rule. Nice way to grease the wheel. |
April 29, 2009 grumpy55 Men's 60 102 posts | Corky I do not believe it is 1 up after the limit, but it is doubles for sure.It has been the same every year since I have been going there. They also go with 70 foot bases which is what their leagues are and not the 65s that are the normal. |
April 29, 2009 Corky Men's 55 451 posts | It is NOT 1 up. After the HR limit is reached anything over the fence will be doubles. |
April 29, 2009 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | Oh, Corky, you are going to make me talk philosophy. The umpires at Midwest only do 1 senior tournament a year. Also this qualifier is the first one of the year; so a team could be much better or worse than they were last year. So what we have done forever is to use the same rules on all divisions. This way no one gets too pounded, and the umpires don't have to know 10 sets of HR rules. All HRs are doubles. In SSWC they do not need to be "pushed" (SPA would). I have asked the Major and Major Plus teams if this is a problem for the last few years, and the most common response is that they are having fun because they don't get on base much. So if you want more than 2 bases, don't hit it over the fence and run. No one has ever complained to Tim or I about this, and Terry and Fran have never told us if anyone complained to them. Corky, you start umpiring at 4:00 AM Saturday. ;-) |
April 29, 2009 Brett Men's 55 239 posts | I was of the understanding this was an SSUSA sanctioned 'qualifier' tournament. Had I known there would be deviations of this nature from SSUSA rules, we would have likely gone elsewhere. We have never entered this tournament before and were looking forward to it. Now I find myself somewhat dreading it. |
April 30, 2009 Major D 1 posts | Hey Nancy - All I ask that Corky doesn’t get tossed out of another Brickyard Classis game. He embarrassed his team mates last year. Maybe retirement has settled him down. See you at the Brickyard, good luck to all! |
April 30, 2009 missouridave Men's 60 166 posts | Nancy, When will the brackets, game times, be posted? Thanks. |
April 30, 2009 stig1 Men's 60 32 posts | Nancy will we be charged $3 per day to get in and will the flip flop rule be used? |
April 30, 2009 Wes Men's 65 335 posts | Nancy---I understand the schedule is out where do we find it??????? Wes |
April 30, 2009 Wes Men's 65 335 posts | Nancy I went to midwestsportscomplex.com and got a business & Tennis store could not find any softball stuff Wes |
April 30, 2009 Corky Men's 55 451 posts | Brett....don't let the deviation in rules deter you from attending this tournament. It's probably one of the better run tourneys of the year, other than Champaign and THATS been moved. It's only an early qualifier and the turn out is usally great. Since Nancy has been training me to be an umpire, we've been doin a little verbal jousting about her decsions. Since our team was recently moved to major and we don't hit many HR's we thought the new HR rules would help us since we have good team speed and defense. We also hit for average (.700) as a team and we feel we could compete with outs being called after the limit was reached. Don't tell Nancy but I really think its a good idea. Sorry Nancy but I won't be available to ump because I hope we are still playing at 4. BTW.... if you make this tourney Brett, I'll tell ya the story of Nancy having security escort me to the parking lot after a questionable call that put us out of a World Series :} (Nancy, you know we will never agree on that one)but we can have a beer and argue it again this weekend cya in INDY. |
April 30, 2009 Brett Men's 55 239 posts | I called the Midwest Sports Complex this morning to get my team's game times. |
April 30, 2009 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | Brett, this qualifier was started back in the days when Bob Mitchell headed SSWC, and the SSWC concept was "for the love of the game". I know in our team travels over the years that almost every qualifier has rules that deviate a little from what you would play on regional and national tournaments. For those tournaments, the rules should be followed exactly. Folks play hard, but anything like the HR rule is to try to keep anyone from getting smoked the first tournament of the year. Also we do not want the problems with umpires that we have seen other places; so we keep to one set of rules. Let me know what you think. Stig1, there are some things that I can not do anything about. Timmy insists on flip-flop and 1-1 count, neither of which I like. He always charges gate fee also. Midwest makes money from this; he just lets me help him and hang out. Wes, that is the right web address. Did you put a www in front? I have made some calls on what you asked me about; no luck yet. Corky, I am not sure how a jewelry rule is a judgement call. I did not like that NSA rule (ejection), but the catcher from St. Louis was already pointing to it when he stepped in the batter's box. Fortunately NSA only kept that rule 2 years because there were many incidents like that. Fortunately for you the rule is gone. Now you just have to worry about girls with big hoop earrings coming up to bat. You are going to fine, kid. The office does have game times because a couple of coaches have already told me when they play. If they give me start times, I will be glad to put them out here, and they know that. |
April 30, 2009 Brett Men's 55 239 posts | Home runs as doubles, flip-flop rule, 1-1 count, gate fee.......are there any other rule modifications we should be made aware of before coming? |
April 30, 2009 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | Brett, maybe you should call me (317-510-6310). Sorry about the gate fee; I know SSWC has the same problem with Victory Lane in Phoenix because they are also a private park. I know we have seen a steady increase every year from Major and Major Plus teams (there are 16 at the 50 and 55 level); so I still think that you will have a good experience because you will be playing some of the best teams in the country. |
April 30, 2009 tg69 393 posts | nancy. are there any Ky. yeams in your tourney? |
April 30, 2009 JohnBob Men's 65 256 posts | tg69,we have 6 travel teams here in Louisville but have a Horse race on 1st Saturday in May and have a hard time getting enough players to play in this Tourney . We did play in this event 4 years ago and had a great time. Well ran Tourney and very good teams. Nancy hope you have good weather. |
May 1, 2009 jc24 96 posts | It's Friday..been raining here all week, anybody over in Indy give an update on Midwest Complex, that's been by the complex. how we look'n for Sat/Sunday. We have a good chance to get this tourney in? Just wondering.... JC #24 |
May 1, 2009 stig1 Men's 60 32 posts | Ther may be a few downsides to this tourney (70' bases, gate fee, flip flop) but there is one guarantee we will play this weekend. I have played all day and all night in steady rain and the field are playable. They have very few rainouts. |
May 1, 2009 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | There are a couple of teams that Midwest found out were not going to be there after the draw. No one's start time changed, but Timmy fixed the brackets last night. So check the schedule when you get in. The issues on HRs have been resolved. No KY teams. We are lucky enough to have a few show up now and then, but the Derby keeps them home. Midwest was the only park playing last night. If anyone has concerns, the playing conditions number is 317-875-8833 x1. |
May 6, 2009 Wes Men's 65 335 posts | Nancy give us the winners from last weekend. Wes |
May 6, 2009 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | Wes, it was nice to see you again this weekend. As soon as the office gets the results to me, I will post them here. |

May 8, 2009 Corky Men's 55 451 posts | Here is one that i know of: Brickyard Fiddy 5's won the 55AAA. Good job To Ralph and the boys. Brickyard 50's |
May 8, 2009 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | Sloball1, Midwest told me today that they have all of the results together in a folder that they will give me when I come out there tonight to umpire, and I will probably post them Monday. If there is a bracket that you are interested in, I can get you that information sooner. What I found most interesting was that in the 50s there were 2 upper brackets of 4 Major teams and 1 Major Plus each. The Major Plus teams came in 2nd and 3rd respectively in their brackets. I know this is one of the things that Butch was interested in. His team was the only Major Plus in the 55, and he did win his bracket. For the most part, the brackets were fairly even. The admin staff at Midwest is new this year; so I am trying to be gentle with them. |
May 8, 2009 Corky Men's 55 451 posts | Nancy..........put in a good word for me........I need some experience (work and $$$) ;-} |
May 8, 2009 Gekle BUilders Men's 50 204 posts | Nancy did the M+ teams spot the M teams 5 runs and play under major rules? Is this an indication that we need to combine the two divisions? Not asking you this directly, just throwing it out there in general.Or should these M+ teams have been moved up in the first place?I kind of agree with the Wood on this topic.COMBINE |
May 11, 2009 Stoney Men's 60 43 posts | I know the results of 50AAA was as follows: St.Louis Sting Chicago Prime Maudy's Grille Detroit Jags |
