June 10, 2009 the wood Men's 65 1123 posts | Wow! This is hard to believe even though I knew that Pinky had been ill. One thing that struck me about him was how large and strong his hands were. In my lifetime there have been very few guys with hands that just completely engulfed my hands but his did. I tend to remember those folks. But Pinky would be easily remembered for many other things... such as his unwillingness to say 'no' to a dare... hardly anyone was ambiguous about him, they either loved him or hated him (and those that hated him didn't know him)... he was a gentle giant of sorts... he loved to laugh... he wasn't shy about having a cocktail here and there... he was a real tough pitcher back in the day (25 years ago)... always a tough out... and many other favorable attributes. Over the past 10-11 years seeing him almost always put a smile on my face and those around him were laughing at something pretty much all of the time. Sometimes he said something funny (probably inadvertently) and other times he was the 'victim' of something others said (like his size 13.5 - 14.0 shoes). While he will truly be missed by many, I am glad that he isn't suffering any longer. But we have just lost one of the all-time 'great characters' of So California softball. Rest in peace, Pinky... June 10, 2009 Tate22 Men's 60 280 posts | As a former teammate and opponent of Pinky, I am saddened to hear of his passing and relieved to hear that his suffering has ended. As many have said, he was a larger than life character who livened up many a game and dugout. I remember in particular his generosity as a teammate. My condolences to his family, from the entire Knighthawks team. Don Newhard |
