Tournament results
I understand that weather ended the 55 AA & AAA in Dalton. That's unfortunate but what can you do? The bracket indicates there were still 4 AAA teams in the winners bracket. Anybody know who/how/if winners were determined? I wonder if the team declared to be the champions will be get moved up.

Here is how the 50+ AAA and the 55+ AAA ended at the SPA National in Dalton this past weekend.

The Texas Silverbacks in the 50+ AAA division were in the finals of the winner's bracket (which had not started play yet) along with a team called Springfield Express when the tournament had to be cancelled due to rain, so both teams were Co-Champions.

In actuality, the Texas Silverbacks were beating RAM softball 13-9 in the bottom of the 6th with the Silverbacks as the home team in the winner's bracket game that was to lead to the final of the winner's bracket game, and Springfield Express was beating James R. Smith Trucking 16-10 in the top of the 7th (I think) of the winner's bracket game that would have lead to them being in the final of the winner's bracket when the non stop rains came.

So Texas Silverbacks were given credit for the win over RAM Softball and Springfield Express was given the win over JR Smith Trucking which would have put the Silverbacks and Express into the Winner's Bracket final.

Because no more softball was to be played, the Texas Silverbacks and Springfield Express were declared Co-Champions.

There were 12 teams scheduled in the 50+ AAA bracket (I think 10 actually showed) and all of the teams that were there were STOUT. Every allowable home run was hit by each team in each of the 6 games the Texas Silverbacks played. This was the strongest field of AAA teams I have seen in my 5 years of playing the SPA National 50's AAA. There really was not a weak team in the 50+ AAA event.

The Texas Legends 55's in the 55+ year old AAA division were beating Stancils Photo in the 6th inning in the winner's bracket game that was to lead to the final of the winner's bracket game, and KC Thunder was beating Roman's in the top of the 6th or 7th when the non stop rains came if the winner's bracket game that was to lead to the finals of the winner's bracket.

So the Texas Legends 55's were given credit for the win over Stancil's and KC Thunder was given the win over Roman's which would have put the Legends and KC Thunder into the Winner's Bracket final. Because no more softball was to be played, the Texas Legends and KC Thunder were declared Co-Champions.

I have been wearing out the SPA board trying to find the results. Thanks for the detailed update.

The declared results for the 50 AAA bracket are just but neither lead was safe.
It is a shame the loosers bracket did not get to have a say in the final results as the entire field was that strong.

Cheers for giving the field the best chance of playing the full tournament.

As for moving the two Co Chanps to Majors next year; I dare to say they would compete. Go ahead and put J R Smith, Dub's Bar-b-q, Texas Thunder, Springfield Express, J&J Sports and Smith's Laminating up there too. {;>)

On the 55's side, cheers to KC Thunder. I watched them play some quality ball. their character was equal to their skill and desire.

10 diamond complex and 5 diamonds went unused the entire weekend.Even with rain forecast for Saturday, there were times on Friday when one or two of the five diamonds that were being used were empty.(no games on). There was no reason to have to play at night and absolutely no reason that this tourney could not have come closer to conclusion.Especially with 10 fields.
Very competitve field in both age groups too bad the scheduling was second rate.Congrats to "Co-Champions"
Thanks SPA.

EVERYONE GOT 5 GAMES MIN. IN TWO DAYS AND SOME GOT MORE IN THE LOSERS BRACKET FROM WHAT I COULD SEE .... ON FRIDAY ALOT OF THE TEAMS AS THEY GOT IN LOSERS BRACKET WERE PLAYING WITH 1 HOUR REST .... WITH ALOT OF SENIOR TEAMS NOT WANTING TO PLAY BACK TO BACK MANILY IN THE WINNERS BRACKET I WOULD THINK THAT WAS WHY THE LOWER FIELDS WERE NOT USED ..... MY OPINION ..... I DONT SPEAK FOR SPA AND NEVER WILL .... ALOT OF THINGS HAVE TO COME INTO PLAY GROUNDS CREW , UMIPERS , TOURNEY STAFF , SCORE KEEPERS , AND THE WISHES OF THE TEAMS NOT TO PLAY BACK TO BACK .... THEN THERE WAS THE RAIN AND YOU JUST CANT COUNT THAT AS RIDGES FAULT .... AFTER SAT MORNINGS RAINS AND THE RADAR SHOWING SO MUCH MORE COMING RIDGE HAD A LOT ON HIS MIND .... I HAD HERD SOME EST. THAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN 7:00 PM SUN BEFORE THEY WOULD HAVE GOT FINISHED AND THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN TO LATE FOR THE FLYING TEAMS TO MAKE LAST MIN. FLIGHT CHANGES .... IM SURE RIDGE HAD MEMORIES OF THE AND EARLIER DALTON THAT WE LOST ONE FULL DAY .... THIS YEAR WE LOST 1 1/2 DAYS AND STILL PLAYED GAMES AT 9:00 PM START TIME ON FRIDAY ..... GLAD TO SEE SO MANY TEAMS AND HOPE TO SEE YALL NEXT YEAR .....

No need to shout.
We did start on time, 9:00 AM on Thursday and the rain did play a role in the scheduling decisions. You make the point well on the logistics of tournament play. X number of fields require X number of officials. We had good officials and no issues in the 5 games Monster Softball played. I would like to thank those that worked our games.

And about the lower fields. More ant hills than you could shake a stick at. glad we did not play on them.

Planoplayer, all home runs were hit.
It seems like I was right, they should combine Major and AAA. Keep Major Plus by themselves along with AA.
Three divisions instead of 4 would make everyone happy.

Hey Leoslocks: if you play for Monster could you do me a favor? This is the 2nd basemnan from Texas Silverbacks. When my glove broke in the 3rd inning of our game, one of your players showed unbelievable sportsmanship when between innings he came over and gave me a glove repair kit which allowed me to fix my glove in between innings. I really want your player that did that to know that I really appreciated it. Could you let him know for me please?

Also the game we played was a great game...back and forth and full of offense and defense. Great Game!

I am that utility player/glove repair/batting practice pitcher player. As for the sportsmanship, that is what I have come to expect from Christian ball players at SPA tournaments. Your team as well as the entire field was equally gracious in sportsmanship.

Great game indeed. The difference was in the top of the 7th, runners on first and third with one out with Monster up two runs. Top of the order is two batters away. Your third baseman moved a step and a half to his left to take some of the 5/6 hole our batter had been wearing out all game. He hits a laser into the ground that kicks up belt high. He picks the ball and turns a double play.
Two outs in the bottom of the 7th with one on and the Silverbacks put 4 straight hits together to win the game against a quality pitcher.

Good Balls made quite the difference. If they combined Major and AAA, I would be playing AA as would a good portion of AAA players. There were a couple of Major caliber hitters on every team but the teams were top flight AAA teams and not Major. We hit more accidental home runs than intentional home runs. Again, thanks SPA for allowing us to put a new ball in play by providing our own. I don't think any team used just the dozen provided.

PlanoPlayer: Leo is a class guy and very good ball player. Leo, I was wearing the SPA board out also as you would have thought they would have updated the brackets with the rainout info and winners declaration.

PlanoPlayer lets get it straight! In the 55 AAA at Dalton, the KC Thunder was beating Romans after 5 innings, so they were declared winners. The Texas Legends 55 were up by one run and Stancil Photo were up in the bottom of the 5th with a man on first and two out, when the game was called. What SPA decided was to not count the game and flip a coin to determine the winner of that game, which Stancil lost the flip and came in third. The cowinners were KC Thunder and Texas Legends 55.

Please bear in mind I don't have a dog in this fight but I'm wondering why they didn't apply the tie breaker rules they use in pool play.

The idea of "co-champions" just doesn't work for me.

I beg to differ, we sucked(GA Longshots). Just kidding we played good at times it just seemed that we preferred to fight more that play softball. I believe you guys just wore out the middle on us. Our pitcher had a few close calls and I think he was even knocked down once. We just didn't hit as well as you did.

Yes his name is Ed but that is about all I know about him. We only play in a few tournaments together as a team so it is hard to get to know each other. I don't know you and you have only one post so I don't feel very comfortable giving out to much info.I could pass on some info, if I do manage to get in touch,if you need to contact him. I think he is looking for a new place to play next year, don't know that just guessing. He didn't seem to happy with the way things ended this year.
