Jan. 30, 2010 DCPete 409 posts | SPA survey The results of the 2009 SPA survey were issued this week & can be accessed thru their site. There were nearly 1,600 players responding (don't know who or how they were selected). For the question of "how satisfied are you with the current 1.2 bat spec (includes Ultra IIs)" 71% said they were somewhat or very satisfied while 7% said they were somewhat or very dissatisfied. Also lots of other interesting stuff on the survey worth checking out. |
Jan. 30, 2010 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | There are some suprises there. Some even contradict what we thought the majority here want. |
Jan. 30, 2010 lemons Men's 65 323 posts | Lots of worthwhile comments.......Ridge should pay attention. Much of my interest was devoted to the rating system and its inequities. |
Jan. 30, 2010 wagon487 Men's 55 578 posts | After reading the comments, i think some crazy ideals, More HR for AAA, get rid of the extra home plate, wood bats for major plus, use a screen, cloudy in Dalton - can they move the tourney?......just to name a few. And there were some good thoughts, one up for major and above, increase time limits, no games after 8. We are a crazy lot! |
Jan. 30, 2010 Lefty Men's 75 721 posts | I guess some guys will come to find out if their in the majority or not. |
Jan. 30, 2010 salio2k Men's 60 547 posts | Looks like 100% of those that don't like the 1.20 bats voted. |
Jan. 30, 2010 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | Some good comments and other notes were wrote, Did anyone else get a NO SERVICE error messages for the 'comments' and 'other' links from page 4 on? I'm unable to read them. |
Jan. 30, 2010 grumpy55 Men's 60 102 posts | Taits, same thing happened to me. I brought up the SPA site and went to playing rules, paged down and got in that way. Hope this helps. |
Jan. 30, 2010 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | Salio, that's funny, 7.5% or 121 out of 1579 don't like 1.20 bats! Only 32% thought a ball hit up the middle and hitting a pitcher should be an automatic out. |
Jan. 30, 2010 E4/E6 Men's 70 873 posts | I think this survey is a good step in the right direction for SPA, but until they add more tournaments in the west I dont see where it represents Senior Softball as a whole. How many surveyed were from the Western Region? Still there are some surprises. |
Jan. 30, 2010 stever Men's 70 99 posts | Bruce, not only that, but 17 of the comments about the PPR said that they wanted SPA to get rid of it. Since SPA didn't have one, wonder what they were thinking? Also, 136 of the 685 comments said they thought the rules were just fine as they are. |
Jan. 30, 2010 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | I went back after I posted and it was ok... you might try again... |
Jan. 30, 2010 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | Your right on the comments and other, some are cut off and or missing. But the basic info is there i believe. All this was done before the PPR stuff and now that its basically gone perhaps SPA had serious thought about utilizing it. Great survey in any case and seeing the majority of results is even better. Anyone figure out how to print it? Mine came out with only the blue part... |
Jan. 30, 2010 salio2k Men's 60 547 posts | I received my survey invitation through my e-mail. I have played in 4 or five SPA nationals and had a good time. Perhaps they will move to the west coast someday. RH said he was looking into it because players from the west were asking. With the PPR gone, I don't think we have too much to complain about. Of course I don't pitch for my team. |
Jan. 31, 2010 mad dog Men's 65 4190 posts | well it also looks like mostly hitters responded,no real responses from fielders or pitchers that i can see. |
Jan. 31, 2010 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | Salio2k, Ridge was here last year. Perhaps taking a look around. Another alternative could be good for the players. I only see 1-2 NSA offerings any more but they have slim turnouts for seniors. Younger guys tourneys are darn good however. Down side would be ability to get fields and conflicts with any other assn on the same weekend. Conflicts are bad enough. A major reason unfilled brackets exist. Roughly 17 questions and addressing issues for that time frame. Ability to view results with numbers was even better. I did not see them from last time though they may have been available. ridge has used it as a tool for the players and the ASSN. Would be great if used here as was done... But imo, too much is 'out of sight out of mind' action. |
Jan. 31, 2010 stever Men's 70 99 posts | mad dog - how do you come up with that idea?! Remember, only about 10-15% of all players are pitchers. From the comments section I thought they were well represented. |
Jan. 31, 2010 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Way to go SPA, actually testing players to find out what they think and want and I didn't even get to vote. The results for those who are satisfied with current bat standards/specs was an overwhelming majority. No surprise at all. As has been said and demonstrated numerous times the great majority of players want/chose to play with a lively bats and balls. Let's get ready for a terrific 2010. |
Jan. 31, 2010 mad dog Men's 65 4190 posts | stever go back and read my post again please,it includes all players, not just pitchers.there are 10 positions on the field(tho only 9 are directly involved with fielding a hit ball) as i remember.like i said, i didn't see a lot of comments from fielders,or pitchers.all i saw was a bunch of comments from guys who want to hit a ball so no one will be able to field it,even if they are in place to try and do so.the new bats are just plain stupid,i wish i had been sent a survey to fill out. |
Feb. 1, 2010 E4/E6 Men's 70 873 posts | E, When SPA is properly represented in the Western Region, then and then only will their survey really mean something to Senior Softball players, playing in the West. Until then it is only a reference guide. Still a good start! They didnt mention lively balls did they? JK. You know I couldnt let it go! =) |
Feb. 1, 2010 einstein Men's 50 3112 posts | Check that fork in you, E. I'd say you're well done. See you in Reno. |
Feb. 1, 2010 Ho 301 posts | Taits: If you still want to print the survey. Go to the menu bad at the top of the page..click the "printer" picture at the far left and then print. If you want to transfer it to your own files on (word, etc)..click the second "printer" on the left of the top tool bar and select where you want it moved. Tried them both and it worked. Ho |
Feb. 1, 2010 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | Ho, I'll try it thanks |
Feb. 1, 2010 Lefty Men's 75 721 posts | E4 the survey had a ball survey. It ask which ball would you rather hit with next season. I tell you for me I didn't pick the $25.00 a dozen. Which doesn't last for about 5 hits and flight restricted. |
Feb. 1, 2010 JohnBob Men's 65 256 posts | Lefty,I don't remember a ball question on the SPA survey. |
Feb. 1, 2010 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | Basll question was around #10 I believe. but some questions had other questions too. Had about four makers listed. Was before Bat questions and not in the results. |
Feb. 1, 2010 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | Ho, No menu on mine for fast try... Should have said I use a Mac, but can use a PC I have also.... I tried again with only PDF printing no luck, same result. |
Feb. 1, 2010 Lefty Men's 75 721 posts | John I am getting old and I might have done another survey this year. There was different brands of balls. You know you play ball in my area of the country sometimes and the balls we hit are never high dollar balls. They avg. about $44.00 a dozen. Now if you give me a good ball I'm sure a would agree with mad dog. With a hot ball my hot bats would not last for a week end. But saying that if I want to hit a suck I would still be playing rec. ball and not tourney ball. Joe Lefty Falcon Wild Bunch Softball 60 Major |

Feb. 1, 2010 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | Should have been BALL question #10 Given many questions let to another and not all are listed in results no telling what results were. Just like the cut off other and comments remarks. But the mere asking for opinions is way up there in wanting to know how players feel about the many issues we have. Some results in the past have been incorporated in what they do. A positive approach to interaction. |
Feb. 1, 2010 E4/E6 Men's 70 873 posts | Scott, try copying and pasting to yourself. Then you can print it out. |
Feb. 1, 2010 E4/E6 Men's 70 873 posts | Thanks JohnBob, I was going to humor the old boy. =) |
Feb. 1, 2010 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | E-4-6, That's how I originally tried it Only the Blue parts showed up. Will try to change to post script and on my PC. Thanks youngin. |
Feb. 1, 2010 Jano23 Men's 65 97 posts | Mad Dog, I, too, was wondering what you were talking about when you stated that "well it also looks like mostly hitters responded,no real responses from fielders or pitchers that i can see." It seems to me that everyone who responded was either a DH, or a fielder/pitcher. Are you saying they were all DHs? Doesn't seem likely. Jano |
Feb. 2, 2010 mad dog Men's 65 4190 posts | jano,to me it looks like all responded from the hitters point of view,is what i'm trying to say.nothing really about having to field a missile hit at ya(from pitchers or fielders).i saw no responses, regarding the safety of anyone. |
Feb. 2, 2010 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | Maybe most responded about the issues that are most important to them. ;) |
Feb. 2, 2010 mad dog Men's 65 4190 posts | most likely bruce and most did from the hitters perspective, not the fielders side.i really would like to see who really likes having to field balls hit at them at our ages from these hot bat/ball combo's,i would say the MAJORITY don't really like the missiles hit at them. |
Feb. 2, 2010 lemons Men's 65 323 posts | Keep in mind that this was not necessarily a survey that was presented to all participants in senior softball. Even I got an e-mail from SPA inviting me to participate.....which I did. Interpreting these random results is an improbability, but a good talking point. P.S. Mad Dog, those same guys probably like hitting missiles. :>) |
Feb. 2, 2010 BruceinGa Men's 70 3233 posts | lemons, probably just as scientific as any poll taken these days. After all, a poll or survey isn't meant to ask all concerned. |
Feb. 3, 2010 E4/E6 Men's 70 873 posts | Mel, we have a true like/dislike relationship with Senior Bats and "lively" balls. We love to hit them but dont necessarily enjoy "trying" to field/dodge them. =) Although it has been said "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball". Did this poll mention how many were polled and what parts of the country were represented? It might be interesting to see the regional results. |
Feb. 3, 2010 lemons Men's 65 323 posts | Bruce, I agree, however there should be a representative sample. John, you're absolutely right about balls and bats, and I would like to see some regional results as well. Good thing we don't take a poll at the beginning of every game. :>) |
Feb. 4, 2010 4x4 Men's 65 601 posts | I'm not sure how much "regional" results there would be. I'm from Calif and filled out the survey, however, as there were not a lot of west coast teams the regions that would have the best results number wisewould be in SPA "country". Not much out this way. |
