July 12, 2005 5-RBIS Men's 65 12 posts | What's the call? SSWC Toury Rules Tie game, bottom half of the last inning, two outs. The slowest man steps in the box, and doubles. Time is called and the manager decides to put in his fasest courtsy runner, forgetting the fact that he would be the third batter. The opposing manager realizes the fact and intentionally walks the next two batters, bringing to the plate the man on third. Questions..... Can the manager now pinch hit for the runner on third and still leave him in the game? Can the manager now take the runner on third out of the game, and put in a sub runner, and pinch hitter? Or what? |

I think the game is over in both cases. If this is not the case, it would be nice to know the answer before nationals. Good Question!! |
July 12, 2005 Connie Women's 55 118 posts | According to the SSWC 2005 Rule book, page 86 Rule 13.4 (4) Courtest Runner Coming to Bat While on Base: A courtesy runner on baase when it is his tun to bat will be declared out. The runner will be removed from the base and a second courtesy runner cannot be subsititued. The courtesy runner called out does not lose his turn at bat. According to your scenerio then the runner on third is now going to be up to bat - that means he is called out - making it the third out. |

July 13, 2005 mad dog Men's 65 4190 posts | if you have an extra player to sub in(player not in the game)he can pinch hit for the runner on base i would think.if you don't have the sub then he is out. |
July 13, 2005 Ken Men's 55 462 posts | If you substitute for the guy on third, the sub is still on third, and the guy subbed for is out of the game. The sub is due up and therefore out. Interesting question though. |
July 13, 2005 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | Maddog, I am glad that you brought this up because I have thought about it before. The rule says that he is out which I agree with, but it seems like if a coach would sub in somebody before that batter came up that they would become just a courtesy runner since they were not in the game at the time. So would reporting in any time before the actual rule kicked in be valid (while that batter would be on deck, in the hole, post hole, etc.)? I am sure that it will come up on someone's diamond, probably in a national sometime. |
July 13, 2005 Fred Scerra Men's 80 542 posts | It is plain and simple. I don't have the rule book in front of me but you can't pinch run for a pinch runner. So Connie is right with the rule stated. |
July 14, 2005 JW 10 posts | But don't the rules say that a courtesy runner simply has to be on the roster --- not necessarily in the batting order. Therefore, if you substituted for the man on third couldn't be still be a courtest runner and someone else bat in his place? |
July 14, 2005 crusher Men's 75 524 posts | I believe the purpose of the rule is that "If you screw-up and put a runner in for someone and that runner is due up to bat while on base, that runner is out". I have seen this several times and the guy on base is called out. The out is recorded to the position that would have been on that base and NOT to the pinch runners position in the batting order. Then the runner takes his normal turn at bat. This is how I haved seen it called and how I remember reading the rules some times back. Later. C. |
