Individual awards for senior players
We have a 60 team out of Austin.
there are several new players to
SSUSA. these players play their hearts out, (as others do also). I have coached and managed for over 30yrs, I see now problem in giving recognition to player who gives 100+ percent for their performance. I look at the desire, attitude and a team player
of each player for these awards. It's
unfortunate that some teams just give
out MVP's etc for just hitting average
to their top players. If someone dosent do well in the event, but still gives their hearts out, these people
should still be recongnized. I know that a award to one who has NEVER received anything in their lives makes this person feel really special and motivates them to have FUN and enjoy what we are out here for in our association.....

Larry, I agree, in Georgetown we had one (1) player who ran and ran for guys, and the umpires said that should be your MVP. I had already announced the MVP and four (4) ATP, and he wasn't on the list. As a manager, in the future I will not let stats be the only criteria in my selection process. I will recognize his effort and contributions by awarding him a MVP or ATP.

Capt Kirk.........YOU ARE THE MANAGER. WHY ARE YOU LETTING OTHERS TELL YOU WHICH PLAYER TO GIVE THE MVP TO? WHAT KIND OF CAPTAIN ARE YOU? THE MOST DESERVING SHOULD GET THE RECOGNITION!

Larry that's why ssusa gives them to the manager, so he (or the team)can decide on the criteria. All the teams I've played on have always gone on over-all performance. Giving to just the best hitter is weak.

Dude why did you start a new thread?
Didn't like the title?
Or do you just like see your name at the top.

SALIO2D, BASED ON YOUR COMMENTS, YOU ARE NOT A MANAGER, AS A MANAGER YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO ACCEPT CHANGE AND LISTEN TO YOUR PLAYERS. OUR TEAM HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN PROVIDING AN OPEN ARENA FOR DISCUSSION. MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY DOESN'T WORK IN SENIOR SOFTBALL, GET WITH IT.

Capt Kirk.......In your statement above, you do not say in the future "WE" will decide who gets the awards. You say "I"will recognize his effort and contributions by awarding him a MVP or ATP. Sounds to me like "you" will be making the decision, not "WE".

What have you got against Senior Olympics giving out participation medals? My teams have participated many years and received these medals. They are similar to the St. George Senior Olympic Games.

sal, huntmans only give medals to the winning teams, well 1st-3rd.they do gives us a shirt when we check in,but they should as registration is about $80 a person.
as i have said in another thread, our team goes by on base %,coach keeps the book, yes it can stink for the outstanding defender who doesn't hit,but we all think its ok.coach does give the team trophy to a player that is giving it his all but for some reason his stick is not going or he is just out of the all tourney range. for that type of reward.

It's a nice shirt, Bob. My team also usees the OBP. It's not perfect, but we all know that if you get on base often, you will get an all-tourney should you win.

I understand that some guys don't, but isn't playing hard an expectation? What you are supposed to do? We now want to give awards for doing the expected?

Yes it is great when a guy goes above and beyond, but shouldn't everyone be?

Most any form or award is great or good enough. It's a team game and I am wondering where the "I" is, in team? BUT Assn's each have they own way of rewarding players. The extra 'kudo's' are one of them.
