March 9, 2011 JoeB 7 posts | Foul or Fair A batter hits the ball which hits the ground in fair territory between home and first base then bounds up in the air and is fielded over foul territory before it strikes the ground. Is this a fair or foul ball? |
March 9, 2011 JoeB 7 posts | Let me add--The ball never goes past first base. |
March 9, 2011 SSUSA Staff 3483 posts | It's a FOUL BALL - See SSUSA Rule Book Definition at: §1.27 - FOUL BALL A foul ball is a batted ball that: A. Settles or is touched on or over foul territory between home and first base or between home and third base.... [Emphasis added] Hope this helps. |

March 9, 2011 JoeB 7 posts | What is the fielder is in fair territory but the ball is over the foul line in the air between home and first base. Would this still be a foul ball? |
March 9, 2011 mad dog Men's 65 4191 posts | does not matter where the fielder is standing,it is where the ball is in relation the the fair/foul line,in foul territory, foul ball. |
March 9, 2011 SSUSA Staff 3483 posts | The relevant factor is the position OF THE BALL on or over foul territory when touched ... (This is NOT like a basketball player 'making a save' with his feet in-bounds and the ball still in the air, not having touched anything out of bounds) ... Your first question had the ball over foul territory, therefore it was FOUL ... Your last post had the ball over the foul line, and since lines are in fair territory, that would be a FAIR BALL. |
March 11, 2011 Corrupt 3 posts | It all depends on where the ball is in relation to the line. If the ball has completely passed over the line then it is foul ball. If the ball is caught as it is in the process of crossing the line, then it would still be fair ball. |
