| April 19, 2011 birdie Men's 60 654 posts | Back surgey Hitman and DC Pete, Thanks for the information. I see the Dr. tomorrow and see what the MRI shows. I need to do something because this sucks. I will get his opinion and make a decision. I will keep you posted on the decision. Thanks Harry |
| April 19, 2011 pitcher55 Men's 55 129 posts | birdie, i had two lower back surgeries, in 01& 09.and afew other procedures, same area, along the way.stay away from fusions,if at all possible.haven't read of your condition.predisone(mild steroid),can shrink a disc and eliminate leg pain,if disc is not herniated too far.good luck, dennis. |
| April 19, 2011 DCPete 208 posts | Mine got so bad the surgery was a no-brainer considering I couldn't stand up for more than 30 seconds at a time. The disc had completely ruptured and the filling inside was floating around in the spinal column and squeezing the hell out of the sciatic nerve with the pain & numbness going all the way down to the bottom of the foot. After recovery, swinging a bat wasn't a big problem but it took longer to be able to play golf comfortably again. The best therapy seemed to be just walking as much as possible (on a very flat surface like a track) Good luck. |
| April 19, 2011 pitcher55 Men's 55 129 posts | yes, if it ruptured, the pain is worse, and it must be removed right away.if it's herniated,as my 2 were, the pain is a little less intense(but still bad),and usually down into the calf.mine were herniated 14 and 17 milimeters.i mowed the lawn 7 days after the second surgery, and played golf 11 days after.i only swung the club 25%.just love golf.i've had epedurals 4 times, worked twice.i would recomend in this order- steroids then epedural, then surgery.however,if pain is in the foot and nonstop and intense, then surgery(lamenectomy)is probably your only option.i'm still playing with 2 back surgeries, two on left hand, each shoulder, total hip replacement, and other hip shot.love it too much to stop. get by with norco pain med.,soma muscle relaxers, and hip injections. you will play again. |
| April 19, 2011 taits Men's 65 3999 posts | I am very interested in knowing what you had as well as what procedures you had done. Have 2-3 that are bad in lumbar area. Trying to avoid surg but know it might be needed. Last 2 surgeries I had they had trouble giving me the I to put me out . email: tait_ebay@yahoo.com Thanks |
| April 20, 2011 birdie Men's 60 654 posts | Here are the results of the MRI. It is not as bad as the Dr. thought. I am going to do 3 weeks of Therapy and then get looked at after that. No shots or surgery for now. We are going to try the Meds and therapy. I hope that it works out. I guess time will tell and thanks for the help. Harry #20 NV FORCE |
| April 20, 2011 taits Men's 65 3999 posts | The therapy is to try to 'strengthen' the muscles in the lower back. At least that is what i was told when I did it. Good luck Harry. |
| April 20, 2011 hitman Men's 60 281 posts | Harry, Good Luck, hope it works but if it doesn't you'll already know the drill. Almost all core strenghtening and a lot of reps. Sure bets the hell out of being laid up for 3 months. I estimate I'm about 75% now and just need to continue to build endurance. I'd be further along if it wasn't for a nasty sinus infection that i had for a month. Let us know how it goes. The Hitman |
| April 21, 2011 Webbie25 Men's 60 1802 posts | Birdie-I got hit from behind pretty hard in my car a couple years ago-2 herniated disks and some other problems discovered by MRI. My Chiropractor (aka Miracle Worker) went to work and I am still playing softball, just have to go in occasionally to straighten it up, but it beats surgery. Do the strengthening!! It does work in a lot of cases. Good luck, Harry. |
| April 22, 2011 birdie Men's 60 654 posts | Gentleman, Thanks for the words of encouragement. I hope the rehab works and the back gets stronger. I really do miss playing. It will be a long three weeks but I hope that it is worth the effort. I want to get back on the field. Thanks Harry |
| April 22, 2011 mad dog Men's 60 3802 posts | good luck birdie,i do know the predisone works nicely,it was given to me after i had a reaction to some antibiotics i was given and a case of poison oak for the itching i had.yeah i was feeling great all over for about a month after each.... |
