Third base coach holds runner from going to Home plate
Ball hit to outfield, runner on 1st goes to third and maybe home but the 3rd base coach grabs/touch runner who holds up as the ball is received by SS. Is the runner out because of coaches interference? Does the defence have to throw to 3rd or Home for there to be a call?

JoeB,

Coach is not allowed to grab/touch any runner. No throw is necessary for an umpire to make the call. If the umpire knows the rule and sees this happen, he is supposed to make the call, which is, the runner is OUT!

Vinny,

Nothing yet, but I will be talking to SSUSA on Monday morning. Maybe they can give us some heads up on some basic rules, so we can plan for next season. In any event, you would think that we would know no later than after the Phoenix Worlds. I will let you know what I hear next week.

any time the base coach touches the runner regardless if intentional or unintentional, it becomes a dead ball & the runner is out.

Freddie, I am not so sure about the dead ball part. I don't think that is quite true.

Otherwise, are you saying that as soon as the runner is touched play stops? That is what "dead ball" would mean. I don't think so, as what would become of the other runners that are very well between bases?

If the umpire sees that coach touch, grab or physically try and hold the runner that runner is automatically out--it is not an appeal play. The play is still live.
