B.A.S.A. WORLD TOURNAMENT
THIS PAST WEEKEND I HAD THE PLEASURE TO PLAY IN THE BLACK WORLD TOURNAMENT HELD IN BIRMINGHAM, AL. OUR SPONSOR PUT IN 2 SENIOR TEAMS IN THE TOURNAMENT, 1-50'S & 1-60'S, WE WON THEM BOTH. FOR OUR EFFORTS WE RECIEVED MONOGRAMMED MIZUNO JACKETS; ON THE SPOT WITH ALL THE SIZES AVAILABLE. YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO WAIT 8-12 WEEKS FOR DELIVERY!! WE ALSO GOT WATCHES AND MIZUNO BAT BACK PACKS...AND RINGS. THE SHOCKER IS; THE ENTRY FEE WAS ONLY $375. THERE WERE OVER 275 TEAMS THERE WITH ALL AGE CLASSES AND A WOMENS DIVISION. WOULDN'T IT BE NICE TO SEE PRIZES AWARDED AT ''OUR'' SENIOR TOURNAMENTS? INSTEAD OF THE ''2ND PLACE'' HAT!! WE HAD A BLAST.
WE PLAYED FOR RATED ATHLETICS FROM CHINO, CA. [ARNIE] THANKS AGAIN!!!

I have heard of this tournament before, and it is probably a good bunch of guys. And apparently a very well-run event.

But, as a philosophical question, does anyone wonder how a W.A.S.A. would go over?

The is a big event every year. This is the first time I have seen a prize list though. Awesome.
Only other event I have seen that compares to team numbers and prizes is what I think is called the midnight madness event usually put on in Carson City or Reno. I think they held their this year in Carson the same time SSUSA was there for the Rockin Reno event.

Gary19, I think is that were to try to start that the ACLU would be all over them right or wrong.

I too just got back from the BASA World. My team R-time won the 50’ss division 14 teams in the lowers, & 7 teams in the uppers. Great competitors! Only one of several southern softball associations that hold world tourneys! Their prizes are always larger for the winners & 2nd place finishers! I won the BASA Senior 50 division 2 years ago and had to buy a carrier on to take home all the stuff we received... Seriously, bat bag, batting gloves, t-shirt, jacket, I got a GLOVE for all defensive player, and RING…This year you have to buy your ring, but it’s only $125.00 and I must say a little nicer then some other associations! Great fun a lot of trash talking, great Times...

I also played in this tournament this past weekend with teamates Billy Steel, Steve Imlay and Ron Danowski, who just happen to be non-black and several other top players. As Ron stated the BASA had over 270 teams in various divisions, including senior divisions with some of the top senior players in the nation participating including non-black players. What Ron Danowski and Ron Chenier were attempting to start a discussion on, is how can the BASA organization have a world touranment for just $375 per team and give away such a 'GREAT' prize package: bat bags, monogrammed windbreakers, watches and rings for 15 players on the winning team. Even the second place teams received bat bags and batting gloves. One thing that was also important to us is that the tourament director worked with the out of state teams to ensure they had a late start and that the tourament ended early on Sunday to accomodate Sunday flights. This meant that most of us working people didn't have to miss work on Thursday or Monday. Hopefully some of our other senior associations will talk with Mr. Hurcel Ivey from BASA about how they are able to keep tourament cost so low and give away such great prize packages.

Thanks Vice fot the shirts, tournament fee and bats and more importantly congratulations to you, Ron, Dave and the rest of the guys on winning your division.

sad pup, if you haven't already you might want to consider completing the act my cutting them off and just putting on a skirt.

What was negative? I have no problem with the tournament, had sincerely positive things to say about it from what I have heard, and simply asked how the reverse would be received.

Though I do find it interesting that no one has been willing to directly answer my question. I have suspicions what that indicates, but no proof to state it here.

Congrats to all the winners already this year and to the ones finishibg out the year. But cmon here fellas, what Gary did was asked a question after his compliment. He did nothing wrong here, so let's not make him out that he did. I have never had a problem with the Black American & Hispanic worlds. So are all of you indicating youve never had the same thought? I have! But the problem with our society, is the same problem we have right on here. Can't talk about it. Softball4b, your a little thin skinned here.

By the way guys, and even you sad pup, go Google Shaker Heights, Ohio and see the racial composition of the city and our school district we put five kids through. Then let me know which of you lives in as diverse of a community. Any takers?

What I am saying is for almost 24 years I have been putting my money where my mouth is.

Now what is the racial composition of your community? I did not think I would get any takers on that.

The way "stuff" gets started is to have ANY organization, event, or activity that has a sole, specific race in its name.

Only if they hypocritically spend decades complaining about the lack of assimilation, opportunity, and equality, then run their own exclusive events.

Now, I never did say anyone was trying to start anything. NEVER! I just asked how well the W.A.S.A. would go over, and NO one has directly replied.

Ok Gary, your question was really uncalled for! It pretty obvious you like starting Do Do & you bring Pricier along for help….So, I’ll just say this and wait on your response….Black, White, Green or Purple. These are all independent associations that hole these tourneys. They came about because we in the Black community LOVE playing ball and wanted to run our own tournaments, with our own rules! What’s wrong with that? I’m not going to play the RACE card with you, because it’s irrelevant! No one would have a problem (but maybe you) if someone would have, as you say a W.A.S.A World, you know why? Because they already exist. So maybe in the diverse community you say you live in, why don’t you start the 1st annual WASA world? I’ll enter a team in your tourney!
Again, Congratulations to Phil Cobbs, George Robinson, Steve Imlay, Ron, Conway,Kennard, Tate & all the other 60's players you did a great JOB!

Just so that we stay on point here, and since you allege they already exist, can you tell me when and where is the next W.A.S.A. (in actual name or in spirit) tournament?

I think everyone on here loves to play, and as I said by all accounts it was a very well-run event. No qualms with that at all.

Just curious since you said "with our own rules", what were those rules and how did they differ from 'normal' senior rules? Lord knows I think many of the contrived rules need to be corrected/eliminated, just wondering what you guys used.

rightrj1, first off if you read any of my post. You would know I ride with no one! I have been born and raised in Detroit with many ethnic backgrounds and have never had issue with anyone. I will apoligize right here and now if anyone thought I was being anything but straight forward and honest. I'm comfortable talking about this issue, because I have no axe to grind here. Also rightrj1, your community is my community a well. Let's not make this something it's not. Sometimes it just don't pay to be honest. Why is it when Gary or anyone raises a issue that makes people think, they're trying to create a problem or start an argument? There's no winner here.

Everyone,
This thread was started by Ron to congradulate teams on good wins and for a tournament well run with GREAT REWARDS FOR WINNING (hoping other organizations are watching). Can't we just stay on that topic, i realize other comments have come up that may not sit well with everyone but please take them to another outlet. On this board, there is no way we are going to change the way people think or what was really meant by a comment. I think everyone had complaints about two individuals that don't seem to post any longer for a reason. We don't need others to jump in and take their place. Just my thoughts.

The VAST majority of America is white, so why should softball participation be expected to be any different?

And given the widely-held believe that fewer blacks are now playing baseball, which is often where softball players come from, I don't expect a change in that anytime soon.

The degeneration of your post is not at all surprising.

Kennard, We may have misunderstood Gary's post. He may not have intended to imply a white ASA tournament.

It could have just likely have been

Wussy ASA, Whiney ASA, Wimpy ASA, Wannabe ASA,WouldaCouldaShoulda ASA, Whatsup ASA, Wuh ASA, Whoopsthereitis ASA,Whatever ASA,Whiff ASA, WhippingBoy ASA, Wienerschnitzel ASA and my favorite Wanze ASA.

Whatever the intent, he hijacked a thread that was intended to honor those who hosted and participated in a softball related event.

Phillip Cobb, Man your USSSA pitching was a sight to be held. Phil was and still is one of the best utrip pitchers in SO CAL.

And Ron D. Yes the Awards that we received were the Best. We were playing for Rings But the Extras...Watches (Real nice), the Bat Bags, and the Mizuno BASA pull over. BASA was not Cheap when it came to giving out nice awards. Heck just the Ring and 1 item still would have out done any of these other Associations while paying them $600+ dollars entry fee. Can you tell me how many teams in each prize paying division? How many fields? Also before you do the math I'd bet the fields don't cost $250 each per day either. Prizes are a by product from the gross net profit. Its the last thing calculated once you estimate what could be left. Or the first depending on how you lay it out. The bigger the gross net the larger the prizes can be. It's just pure economics. Congrats to the winners :O)

You hit the nail on the head! He's been called out for his ability and "computer softball trashing" many times, always manages to avoid the issue. I find it ironic he refers to Maddog as "sad", for sad gary19 is. Hard to place any true value of his opinions where he doesn't partisipate in our SSUSA tournaments. Local league play hardly gives him any inkling of what transpires in tournament play.
I've invited him all expenses paid to pitch BP to our guys using non composite bats without a screen after he bashed screens. I asked him his relationship with the big names of the past when he drops them to make you believe he was one of that group, no reply. Name dropping phony........

"What I am saying is for almost 24 years I have been putting my money where my mouth is."
That's what he claims; well, then answer this, in the past 5 years, what National(or as you refer to them Regional) SSUSA Tournaments have you and your team attended that would help place any shred of credibility on your opinions of the sport we partisipate in, and the rules we play by. I'm saying you don't know about the tournament trail, and don't play at a level that would lend credibility to your thoughts about rules and equipment, and what's best for divisions of our game. And, if they were all changed to be exactly like your "silly" thoughts, would you even attend tournaments then? Put your $$$ where your mouth is, give us some credence.....

I have played in a half-dozen tournaments over the past 5 years. Not a ton, but for some of us it doesn't take that many to see and assess the state of senior tourneys. Both years I did it was the same teams in the same tiny brackets.

As far as the screens, they are ridiculous. Perhaps they are needed due to the special bats, but that pretty clearly points out yet another problem the bats have caused. But you knew that, we have been over it.

By the way, I never lived in Nazi Germany but had pretty good reason to believe it wasn't a very good idea. Same with Castro's Cuba.

AS FAR AS I KNOW; WE PLAYED @ THE 5-DIAMOND COMPLEX IN JASPER, ALABAMA. THERE WERE 2 OTHER COMPLEXES THEY USED IN BIRMINGHAM. THERE WERE NO SOFTBALL VENDORS AT OUR COMPLEX, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT WAS DONATED.

Gary19,
"curveball" is not unknown, had you taken the time to look you will find that out.
I found out who you were 3 monikers ago with some work, but he is here, really.
Anyway, I don't think the info is really needed, but rather the content of the post.
Stay healthy.

Gary19, I'm Rob Robinson,home-Las Vegas, play 65 Major+ and 60 Major. Played 60 Major and Major+ in CA before moving here, played AAA and Major before that out of Palm Springs. Attend and enjoy a minimum of 8-9 SSUSA tourneys per year. Have played as many as 12 playing in 2 age groups.
Once again, by your standards($$$ where mouth is), please enlighten us with which actual Tournaments and the team that left you so disillusioned. We'd like to include your observations as credible by someone who has been there and done that, not from someone who is an outsider perhaps jealous of peers having a great time.
When you played in SSUSA Worlds in Phoenix, what part of no competition could you share with us? How many teams were in your Phoenix bracket? Also, with the fields so small and such a lack of competition, did it bore you to win?
