An apology to Gary19
It came to me last night that I have been very wrong about you, Gary. When I think you are just baiting me or other people on the board, I did not realize that it is your way of teaching us that our game is very bad at this point. Of course you are always right. When at least 20 very good ballplayers have told me they no longer blog on the message board because of you, I realize they are wrong not to embrace your wisdom of the game. When they refer to me debating you, they say I should give it up, as no one is nearly as smart as Gary. I am always wrong. Of course I was wrong in saying a pitcher charging the plate after releasing the ball is stupid and should be ejected. Just because he puts his life in danger for a recreational game, not to mention the way a batter would feel if he did kill that person, is not as important as the fact that it is a legal thing to do. I'm wrong again. Your many, many years of playing the game at its top levels entitle you to to be the voice of the board and softball sanity, over and over and over again. And, of course, passing on that the wishes of a lot of softball players that they actually wish you would go away is sacrilegious, and a violation of your free speech rights that should never be tempered with personal responsibility. Censorship should not be allowed, for any reason. I will no longer respond to anything you post, as I am always wrong. I hereby fully apologize for my indiscretions.

I'm hoping the April Fool's joke is that you know 20 or more ball players that don't post any longer because of Gary19. I can't imagine anyone choosing not to share perspectives, opinions, insight, experience, hints, concerns, etc. etc., all of which make this a helpful and interesting message board, just because of one contrarian. Say tomorrow that it isn't so.

So we now want to legislate a person's right to do what they wish with their life? Or with the dangers they decide to subject it to? My guess is more people have been killed in and by cars than running at the batter after release.

Did I do it in the 70s and 80s? On occasion. Would I now? Haven't lately, and with senior bats and senior reflexes don't plan to anytime soon. But again, that was all my choice, no one else's. Nor should it be.

But that isn't the point. I think it is still their choice. Would I feel bad hitting and hurting a pitcher who did that? Sure, but no worse than if I saw them get injured in any number of ways. I wouldn't feel responsible, they know the risk and know that they increased the risk with what they did. I just respect their right to do it.

I remember some teams from NYC in tournaments many years (1980's) ago would try charging the mound. At first I, as a batter, thought something was wrong so I stopped and stepped out of the box. Then I realized how stupid he was and that made me mad. He counted on just that or counted on that I would not hit up the middle and drastically change my swing. So from that time on. if ever a pitcher did that, I would hit the ball just as hard as I could right up the middle. Of course I have not seen that since those good old days; when 38 oz Tennessee Thumper was the bat of choice.

You must be an idiot to do that! Yes, this struck a point with me. I don't know any of your names but I know I have played in tournaments since approx 1978 and I have never seen such a stupid thing.

Guys - a truly entertaining thread.

But don't stir up the flames......

Churchill had a quote that could be applied to G19, " a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma".

Gary's one genius is that he is the bellows that finds a way to fan the flames........

That way he's constantly giving himself what bellows do.............

Webbie, I am personally not responding to anything this idiot says anymore.. To give him any response is asking him to type on his keyboard... He's truly a retarded softball player(which is a Stretch to say he is a softball player) and would of never made any team I played on... I'm sure there are more than 20 that don't respond to his fanning the flame reponses. Anyway, great post Webbie, I had a good laugh!

"idiot"? "retarded"?

swing, you should have learned you DON'T want to go there. Not you, not most!

Remember, you are the Mensa member who wants umps to eject batters for "endangering the pitcher". That is still just as hilarious as the first time I read it. Keep swinging the special bats and then acting like you care about safety.

Personally, I am offended because the use of the term retarded! It is a slap at all those who are afflicted with this or anyother special needs disorder. Regardless of your feelings toward Gary, you have stooped way below anything you or anyone else might think of him.

swing, nice try. You had to climb a ladder to reach that level. Trust me, you don't want to compare our levels.

Still want to leave it up to the ump to read minds and eject batters for hitting a ball in the pitcher's area code?

Having said this, I was not offended by your use of the word 'retarded'. I understood the context in which you used it and I recognize that it is a word that has been used in a similar sense for as long as I can remember.

My mother used to say 'pretty is as pretty does'... I have a good friend that owns a BMW dealership and has done incredibly well for himself and his family. Yet he did not graduate from college. How is this possible?
Many other dealers, perhaps much better educated (or not), have gone away over the past 3 1/2 years.
In my softball travels over the past 40 years I have met many sponsors such as Jim Snyder, Bob Nelson, Richard Howard, Campbell Strange, Dan Smith, George Taylor, Bill Bundy and Bob Edmiston... none of them ever mentioned their college experience, varsity letters or the like.
You played for Larry L. Did he ever boast of his academic achievements? He hasn't around me and I've known him for more than 10 years.
Sal, as you well know, there are folks that talk about it and there folks that do it. Big difference!

The Wood, wasn't that Petty is as Petty does???? That's the way I learned it.

For what I believe was a April Fools joke on that specific day, I think it was taken wrong by said person aimed at. Perhaps too there was something that hit a cord of truth to it, therefore the pain it caused and striking out. Either way get over it, move on. It's been done to me, and I'm sure most of us will or have had some 'joke' played on them at one time or another.

I too have a relative my marriage that would meet the definition of words used but do not feel offended by them because here it could also mean how a person swung a bat (retareded) or just plain slow on grasping what is really going on here (idiot, lol) on the board.

I'm sure subject will carry the torch on and on, because it seems to be what he does.

It's incredible how some of you choose to be honorable in the game and life. Pick & choose your fights & morals when it's convenient to look fine and upstanding. Would it not be demeaning to call someone a sped (special ed)? Sure as hell would. Whether you want to believe this or not, that is totally demeaning and I'm referring not to the recipient, but the folks who are afflicted with this with no fault of their own. You use words like these to not use the words most likely banned on this and most every other site. But does it still make it right.

Bob Woodroof.. I was around kids with my god mother my entire life that had some form a retardation from one thing or another... I guess where I'm going with this, is that Gary is a semi itellegent person that just has a nack of stirring the pot in a bad way.. He just likes to argue to argure! He hate Senior Softball Bats, Balls, Rules! If you go through his post, and I have only gone through about 50 of them.. He has nothing to add to anything, but negativity and BS that is Retarded like.. Which is not a nice comparison because 99.9 percent of the retarded people I have been around are very positive! Having a guy like Gary around is like having the Devil's advocate 24/7. IMO and 90 percent of the site. So in Closing Bob, I appreciate the no hard feelings and if we ever meet on the fields I will buy you a beer!

I will accept the beer as quickly as you offer it... no, there are no hard feelings at all. Jackie (my brother-in-law) is a kick in the ass... I watched him 'compete' in Special Olympics years ago and was moved by the level of enjoyment all of the participants seemed to exude. I used quotation marks on the word 'compete' because it didn't appear that they competed as much as they participated.
To me, it's more about how you treat people than it is the nouns or adjectives that you use.

Swing... I don't know you but have to warn you that you have made a terrible mistake. When you offer Woody a beer... that means a pitcher... that usually leads to a pizza or two followed by dinner at Mortons Steak House for his entire extended family... be extra careful if he asks you if he can "come by your place"... the moving vans will follow. Your thoughts on Gary19 and this entire post are interesting. I don't post much (not because of 19) but read often. I don't know if he hates Senior Softball Bats and Balls.. I don't know if he has an IQ or 60 or 160 but I know he manages to get a rise out of more people than anyone else on the board on a consistent basis. His posts do seem to be consistently negative and I am more of a positive kind of person, however, OCCASIONALLY he does present an idea or concept that makes one think a little. I'm not sure but I do believe he ENJOYS the banter and reactions he creates. He seems to have a need to tell us he is smarter than the rest of us and that also causes some knee-jerk kick-back. He typically finds someone that he can banter back and forth with for a bit until that person comes to his senses and finally says "enough" much the way Webbie seems to have finally settled. If you don't like him or what he says, ignore him. Don't stop participating or adding to what this board has to offer. Most of us enjoy and appreciate the information posted. You can read what he says but it is only print.. You don't have to acknowledge his existence if you don't want to and can have dialog with whoever you wish without having to even answer one single Gary19 post. Maybe he will get the idea and back off with what most of us see as negativity and arrogance. I am with Tom up there somewhere when he asks can"t we all just get along.

Oh... and good luck with your new extended family (the Woodroofs)..

LOL Docswear... I spoke my piece about MR 19.. I like to think of myself as reasonable person with sense to help the game and not hurt it. I enjoy hitting good balls with decent bats or ok balls with hot bats. I don't mind guys over 50 having courtesy runners or the second home plate as a protection rule.. I think Senior Softball is a second life in a sport we all love! Since composites seem to be here to stay, anything short of a senior bat would make the cheaters win.. hot senior bats balance the playing field. I have lost championships in leagues to cheater bats.. I would be all for 500 plus compression ball and metal bats, but that's not going to happen. I think the game is fine as it is and players need to police themselves and keep in minds that everyone has to work the next day except for the Lucky retired few out there. Nice post Doc, appreciate the warning about the wood! :-)
