Cheyenne Park for Worlds
1st, I would like to thank the Staff, Umpires & Crew of SSUSA for putting on a very Competitive, Fun & Entertaining Tournament for the 55 & 60 Major + Divisions.
Congratulations to MTC for winning the 55 Division & a special congrats to Connecticut Sportsplex for Kicking our Ass 3 times….lol
WHY SSUSA?? WOULD YOU PUT THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE 55’s & 60’S disvion on the WORST FIELDS in SSUSA WORLD Tourney history?????? Why?? This for me took a lot of the fun out of the game. The outfields were worst then the infields. Holes, dips, High infield lips, bases not staying down. Cheyenne Park was BAD 20 years ago and it’s still the worst Park in Vegas!!!! I hope no one was injured from the bad VERY BAD FIELD CONITIONS & we don’t want to even talk about the RESTROOMS!!!….This is just not acceptable for what we do as a group for SSUSA! This Park should never ever be used again in a SSUSA Event! NEVER, unless reconstructed like Doc Romeo

I agree. Everything was bad. Not able to retrieve some home run balls because of the road and the apartments across the street.
If we have to buy the balls please put us somewhere wherewe are ableto rum them down.
Congrats to the winners Mtc and Hollis.

rightj1, what makes you think because you are "the best players in the 55 & 60's" that you deserve anything better then those of us who play in other divisions other then M+?
Maybe its time the M+ took their turn at the crappy parks. If I'm not mistaken our bodies break and bruise much like those of our superior brothers.

E4 did you play at a crappy field/ park? If not, I suggest you keep your month closed!
I mention the 55’s & 60’s because that’s who had to play on those fields and risk injury, I didn’t mention anything about the other age groups or divisions or parks! Are you trying to say that the lower divisions usually play with these type of field / Park Conditions? Did you not read the part about SSUSA should NEVER EVER use parks like theses? That includes using them for the lower divisions! Hope you feel better now!

E4/E6 (John),

I think you're missing rightrj1's (Ron's) point. He is simply saying that Cheyenne Park shouldn't even be used as one of the venues for this event, and he's right... pretty much the worst fields in Vegas. As for the "best players" comment, both age divisions there were Major Plus, pretty much making them the best in their age division. They just got shafted this weekend.

Hey, the 40's Major/Major Plus, and 50 Major Plus get to play at the Big League Dreams facility this upcoming weekend, so good for them.

rightrj-thanks for coming over to say hi-nice to meet you. After 7 games of rockets coming at me in left from the very potent bats of Hollis, Turn Two, Jim-Joes, and MTC, I have to admit I felt a lot like Terry Sawchuck out there.
Turn2-great to see you guys again-total class again-quite a game for 2 tired teams, eh?
Hollis-what can I say-you were dominant this weekend. Congrats to you for a well deserved world championship.
Bobby Davis-every time you came up I cringed a bit-nice hitting-and you delivered-wow, and sorry about the line drive past your head. I know you had tried that play in Reno in the first inning and I was half expecting it this time because it worked that time, but I didn't mean to come so close to you. That one still makes me cringe a bit!
Also, huge kudos to our GSF team that fought through a couple key tournament ending injuries and kept going as hard as they could. I was proud to be a part of the team!

Major Plus or AA it does not matter; these fields (Cheyene)were not that good. Some outfields had a trench that you had to step over or if you stepped in that area the ball might go over your head. On another diamond we played on there were holes under thick grass behind third base, very dangerous when you are looking up and back peddeling. Sprinkler heads right on the foul line (out of the ground) behind third base. I will give them this, overall i thought the infield dirt was in good shape.

Bathrooms were absolutly filthy and the water did not come on in the sinks, all toilets were very poor and ugly.

We got our butts kicked by some very good teams and i wish to congratulate all the winners. I was impressed with the energy and spirit that Hollis displayed every inning of every game.

rightrj1, I have played Cheyenne and agree they shouldnt be used for anyone, but you also miss the point, reread your inital post, it reads like you are better then other 55 and 60 divisions as far as playing on better fields or being hurt by doing so.
I hope that isnt the case.
Everyone gets a shot at the poor fields now and then.
As far as keeping my mouth closed, it wont happen when I feel like I am being belittled or want to make MY point.
Tony, thanks for your input, it just doesnt read like he probably ment it.

I cannot say enough about the competitiveness of this division and the gentlemen who play the game.

Jim & Joes are as scrappy as a bunch as there is and if you give them an inch they will take a mile. There is no "quit" in them.

MTC game was just a matter of who came up to bat last.

Hollis and Turn Two are just a bunch of athletes. Well played

I do want to compliment our GSF team. The Old guard and the rooks. We lost our SS in batting practice before the first game with a torn achilles, our next SS broke his arm when hit by a pitch standing on 3rd, our 3rd SS is playing bone on bone and needs a knee replacement. Another player can't throw because he needs shoulder surgery and most importantly our coach/teammate lost his wife this week. Tom Hanratty displayed unbelievable courage in leading us while dealing with his own loss. If that wasn't tough enough, this was the last time GSF would take the field. Next year, a number of players will be moving up a division and new teams are being formed.

I Love you guys, see you on the field.

softball4b-Steve got hit by a rocket line drive (not a pitch) on third while running bases that snapped his arm badly. I didn't know if I should bring up Tom, but I also was amazed at his courage to come out and lead us after she passed. Mike-you also had a heck of a tournament-all-tourney again. It's been fun this year!

I know this may piss some people off but here goes. We are the customers and we do have the right to refuse to play if our health is in danger. I have refused to play on fields in my area due to these exact problems. I understand u pay and travel to play but at what point do you say. sorry, can't do this on these fields. The minute someone were to get hurt everyone would be bitching and complaining saying "We knew this would happen these fields suck". Now that SSUSA has this info and many teams do as well. will the games for next week be moved or will the city attempt to fix the problem. If the problems are not addressed and the fileds remain the same this topic will be revisited after next weekends games. I wish everyone that attempts to play on these fields good health and be careful

Come on that ball wasn't hit that hard, it was Corky. Seriously though just bad luck, caught him in the wrong stop.

I had a good weekend. 13 games and 2 runner up finishes. 60 Major Plus and 55 Major. Mamma is buying me a "massage" with all of the money we did not lose gambling because I was playing all of the time. Wonder what it is going to cost me later.

Congrats on your all world "King Webbie/3A".

Boston-so we walk off and not play??? Tony-would you walk away from worlds knowing guys were there from all over the country? I talked to Fran and she and Dave and Terry are doing EVERYTHING that they can to make sure this doesn't happen again. Fran was out there at Cheyenne-she knew and had the guts to come out there to talk to people. They had no more fields to work with. Pretty 'ballsey" (sorry Fran) in my opinion. If it does happen again I will be surprised and very disappointed. Teams like Turn Two, Hollis, Jim-joes, KC kids, etc., etc. came from a long way to play. Everyone played hard. I don't believe you will EVER see Cheyenne in play again.

Mark: That is a good question. I have walked off fields in local USSSA tourneys and in leagues, when I did not like the conditions of the field. In fact, there are fields I refuse to play on so I don't show up. I couldn't care less about guys coming from all over the country and playing them. Did all that stuff in college and competitive travelling teams in Boston in basketball, baseball and fottball. Only 2 things concern me in this situation. My health and not letting my teammates down. So, if they decided to stay and play i would respect their decision. With that said, I would definitely make sure I played safe

If it hadn't been for the poor condition of the field at Cheyenne I wouldn't had gotten a hit in my last at bat against Turn2, lol! Apparently Sammy stepped in a hole in rc and went down, unable to catch my line drive.
Just kidding all.

The fields were pretty bad, but the restrooms were terrible. Webbie, fran should have had to use those porta potties. They were six inches from touching the seat. Can anyone close their eyes and Imagine that picture. My wife took pictures of the women's restroom. Grafitti was written on the sidewalks. NO one should have to play at these fields.

I bet you will, BCA80. Fran was at Cheyenne in person. They did not duck it. I really think they did not expect it to grow by 33% in one year. In that respect, congratulations to SSUSA for their success.
Tony, I came close to getting hurt a couple times Friday in the ruts, swollen ankle from one of those, and another fly ball I missed because I had to run down hill to a ball that was well foul but I could have gotten on a level surface and could not recalibrate after the dip, but I never considered walking away with the caliber of teams we were to play. Although we did comment to each other during the games-EVERYBODY out there went 100%. Another tournament, with my knee-.....maybe.
Bruce-great to see you and that ultra smooth swing again-I really wanted to play you again! I look forward to the next time!

Just got home from Vegas and wanted to say what a very well run 60 major plus tournament. Yes, the facilities are sub-par, the bathrooms deplorable, a small trench on Field 4 in left center caused our outfielder to trip 3 times in one game, there is a broken sprinkler in right field on Field 1 leaking, balls are flying on to the highway on Fields 3 and 4 which is dangerous for drivers and players retrieving balls BUT what a great tournament with some of the best people and players I have ever been around.

We had great games with several teams including D&K, TurnTwo and GSF. TurnTwo is strong all over with power, defense and speed. GSF has the most power we have seen and all of the teams have a great group of men. We look forward to playing you guys for years to come. Thanks Webbie, Big Ron, Smooth Steve from GSF, and Clatta, Ray Ray, John, etc. for always bringing your "A" game.

Tom Hanratty, God bless you as you are in our prayers!

Seems like the cities will take our money, but not work with the assn when they know fields are really available.
Time to move the events to somewhere more accommodating OR have 4th session so as not to have fields you know are substandard. That alone is a stab in the back considering the high cost. imo
Not the nicest thing to tell then to loose to avoid playing at a park.
Yes, there were quite a few games to schedule, but that's what pc's are for. :>0

taits-I just have a feeling that LV will realize what has happened and clear things out for next year. Even being Las Vegas-they cannot ignore an event that has the potential to bring in 500-600 teams of 15-20 guys per team plus families-roughly 10,000 player PLUS families for a week. City revenue from this may exceed 30 million. Nothing to sneeze at. (Just a guess).

Rightrj1,
Thank you for standing up for my thoughts. We all were wondering why WE were
selected to have to play there? And, I agree that the upper divisions should
NEVER play on fields that have potential to injure innocent people driving their
cars on North 5th Street because they can hit a ball 400 feet. Most lower division players cannot do that. I am very good friends with both Dave and Fran, and if he says he had no other option, I beleive him. I feel so adament about this park, that I would rather not play in the tournament if selected to go back. I will have my attorney draw up an "OUT" clause when entering the next Vegas Tournament.
Congrats to all the teams that played, especially Conn. Sports and MTC. And,
them pesky dudes from Nighthawks (The Don).
Great seeing and meeting you guys.

As a manager of a team who will have to play on these fields and reading the comments and then ssusa comments not sure they really care at this point. If the fields are unsafe to play on and sounds like two of them are that way and ssusa is aware of this they shoud make some effort to correct these dangers instead of saying tough if you dont like it lose so you can play at another complex. From a legal stand point ssusa knowing the fields could be dangers and or unsafe and do nothing to try and correct them lets just say it could be very costly. Just food for thought we'll show up to play but i'll do what is best to protect my players once i see them for my self.

How does a world tourney have "explosive (read "unexpected") growth? Don't you have to qualify? Aren't there a fixed number of qualifiers? Doesn't that automatically limit the potential number of teams participating?

My team is coming to Vegas this weekend and are playing at Cheyenne. From reading these post it sounds like we need to up our life insurance. We enjoyed playing in Phoenix last year and we were told Vegas was going to be bigger and better. But after reading all these I feel like that will be impossible. We are the largest field in the tournament playing on the worst fields. Can't figured that one out.

With the limited number of fields and the overwhelming number of teams where would you have played? If the M+ were moved to other fields someone had to play at Cheyenne.....who?
Sorry if I am misreading your intent. We all know those fields are shit as is the entire park and can only hope its somehow eliminated from future tournaments or repaired to a suitable condition.

How does SSUSA, who I assume paid a significant fee to use the fields, not contractually require the park to meet at least minimal if not satisfactory standards?

Who pays for substandard products?

People still wonder why I hesitate to patronize these types of arrangemens?

First time at this complex in 60 major plus. It was one of the worst parks I have ever played in. There was a post on here that stated the park had been rebuilt and updated for this year. If that is the case, it must have been a cow pasture last year. This is in a bad part of town also. I asked one of the umps if there was a fairly nice restaurant where I could take my wife. His reply was " None, I'm surprised they don't armed guards here at the field". He was from Vegas and trying to at least be partially funny

Park itself is fine.

Two fields with turf outfields.

No problem with retreiving HR balls, except deep left on field 3.

No place to hit. Try Harte Park - Tonopah & N. McDaniel st. 15 minutes from park.

Leave yourself an extra 10 minutes to get to the park, construction on Lake Mead need to detour around. If staying at Cannery, turn right on Nellis then right on Lake Mead.

1st, I would like to thank the Staff, Umpires & Crew of SSUSA for putting on a very Competitive, Fun & Entertaining Tournament for the 55 & 60 Major + Divisions.- I agree and very well stated, Ron. Umpiring was very good and consistent. Great to see Dave Barnes back in action after his broken wrist incident. This tourney will only grow and get better and we all are going to benefit from the competitiveness of teams this tourney is going to bring in over the next few years.
Cheyenne Fields were disappointing; enough said I'm sure LVSSA/SSUSA have received the message by now.
Congratulations to Hollis 60 Major Plus Champs on a great weekend playing against a very solid 9 team tourney. Eddie and Audieh have put together a great group of guys and deserved to win their first National Companionship in LVSSA/SSUSA. I was surprised and pleased to see Big Arm John playing with you and as always he played great. It was good to see Dave, Patty Mac, Bobby, Jack, Mike and the rest of the guys on Hollis all very good ballplayers and people.
Turn Two was tough as always and enjoyed playing them and finally giving them a good game. MTC was tough as always and it was a tough game against them. Jim and Joe's Ice great competitors and really had a super weekend playing well and making all of us Midwestern's proud. Sorry we didn't get to play against Bruce and Don's guys but you all played well. Didn't see D&K, KC Kids and Master Collision as much because of schedules. All three teams have beaten us this year and can play with any of the 60 Major Plus teams and beat them.

Special thanks to the GSF team and for a competitive year and the opportunity to get know players you have played against as teammates. A very special group who played well especially with the injuries this last weekend. Special Thanks to Tommy who did an exceptional job coaching us this year. Recognition for Mark Webber, Mike Adair and Bob Baimbridge for receiving well deserved All American awards.

Like Steve I thought the level of play in the 55 and 60's was amazing. My son came and could not believe what incredible physical shape and how well these groups played. While the park was not fancy, and other venues more attractive, they filled in alot of holes before the tourney, you could see it, and the infield was fine, water was supplied and concessions and food great. The bathrooms sucked but porta potties were supplied. We played late at night and I felt safe enough at the park..not really anyone around much. A rare Stoneman sighting was appreciated. We have to take our turns at parks, and I appreciate all the work it takes Dave, Fran, staff and Umps to run a great tourney. Happy and Umps did a nice job. The worst for me was seeing how strong the 60 teams were..and how well guys like Imlay, Patty, etc. have aged..as our team approaches 60, I had figured guys would be going downhill and it might be easier..NOT!!! Congrats to everyone for having their game on. And to MTC for being deserving champs and for Hendricks for being a great champion last year and an even better group of classy guys.

Congrats to everyone for having their game on. And to MTC for being deserving champs and for Hendricks for being a great champion last year and an even better group of classy guys.

I would just like to echo what a great staff and umpires we the Crystal Pharmacy had. The Feild was a little rough but the grounds crew worked hard after each game to make the best they could.
Congrat to Audie and the group from Hollis on their Championship, we see them all year and this is the first tourney we did not play them. Great group of guys and even pickup big arm John to help them.
We played MTC 3 times and was lucky to come out on top in very close games EVEN with me pitching. Another group that are gentlemen win or lose.
Getting together and playing a world class tourney is great but seeing old friends like Bogie, Steve, Bobby, Pat Mac, Spoon, Billy Bates, the Group from KC and the Ca.Teams And in the parking lot the great Stoneman made my weekend that and not getting hit Pitching.
Good talking to Terry and Fran about the future of Senior softball was great.

Got my SSUSA Newsletter last week. They were talking about the Texas Shootout at Kiest in Dallas. They referred to fields there as pristine. The three back fields are rec league fields at best. The four main fields are duable, but without rain, those fields are like concrete. The city of Dallas doesn't put much of their own water on anything in south Dallas (Oak Cliff).

Jah#4 and Sliplayer,The reason that Big Arm John played with Rose/Hollis is because George would not approve him to play with Motown,John and Reedus has played the season with Motown 55 Major, they had their ticket and room for 10 days , since John could not play with Motown and Turn-Two didn,t have room for him and Rose did ,and he had played with Patty-Mac before.Webbie25, Stop acting like you don,t belong in the 60 Major Plus, You are a good player.

I'm going to have to agree with E4/E6. It does sound like it quote "WHY WOULD YOU PUT THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE 55’s & 60’S division on the WORST FIELDS in SSUSA WORLD Tourney. Thou he doesn't mention which division but we know he was referring to the Major+ division. There are a lot of players who play for AAA and Major teams that should be playing Major+ but are not and it's because of their preference or because they were not asked to play. Trust me recruiting by Major+ teams or any division go on.

Follow-up to what I just stated. You are dead on about using that field. Someone hitting a homerun on field 4 with two way traffic hitting a car could cause serious accidents. Just trying to retrieve the ball was causing problems because of the traffic. Heck, LVPD was driving by saw the HR he immediately turned on his lights to stop traffic.

Hey Crump-A lot of that is kidding between me and Adair or Imlay. I have felt comfortable since Reno, but especially Mike gives me crap about playing AAA. I don't plan on going back ever unless nobody wants me. But I do have a side of me that still realizes it's an honor to play with and against these guys. I respect what they have done for the game and their accomplishments. And they sure can play ball. Thanks all for a fun year!

Congrates to All the Winners and Runner ups.
There were some Great Teams & Players on stage a few weekends ago at Cheyenne Park. The Best that I have seen in my 10 years of SS.
Hey Crump22, What’s going on Man? Seems like we just can't get together. No St. Louis trip for me this year. How did you guys do in the BASA? Our Team D&K stayed at the Cannery East. I did see your 60s pitcher/coach in the Cannery East lobby Thursday evening. Sorry to say, but I just couldn't get away to see any Major games. The Schedule at Cheyenne Park got all mess up when a Team in the M+ forfeited and left the Park. Only to be brought back 2 hours later to play the forfeit game again. Which push us back 2 hours and ending up having a 4 game wait? Sitting around, walking and talking to Stone man in the parking lot. We couldn't even leave the park, because we had no idea who or were we would play. I Didn't think thay handle that correctly but the name of the game is to beat whom ever they put in front of you. But I Loved , the competition it was FANTASTIC. I'm back in Major plus. Major is fine, but it feels different with the Big Boys. Crump let’s talk about me playing for you if West Coast 60s decides to stay home next year 2013, we’ll talk.
Hey Webby, like you said Saturday, "Looks like we have to take a rain check on that Beer", that was a long day. Webby you and I will be playing against or with each other for the next few years in Major+ and I’m sure that we’ll have that beer and a few more before we let this game go. Way to show up GSF!

A couple of my friends on GSF said we were sand bagging? I've never had to fill bags with sand in my life. So I had no clue as to what they were talking about.lol We are where we belong. We'll be just fine. We will be adding a few more M+ players and then it’s on Baby, It's on and Crackin. Really looking forward to next year, Hey Good luck the rest of the year and I'll see you soon.

You still can hit Crump, but don't tell everybody, they know.lol

2001 Thats when I was introduce to SS. My first and only trip to Detroit(Looking forward to get back there, I have peoples in Lansing and Saganaw- spell check not working). 2001 is when I also started playing with the Mavericks. Yes,Pine knob sure did beat us. A year later the 2002 Mavericks won the LVSS and started on its winning ways and the next 10 years was simply awsum(Thanks you again Ken Lipenski).
