Which is the World Series Champ?

I heard this discussion and needed to get some understanding.

The subject was actually how long does a World Series Championship team keep it's reign?

One point of view is that the team keeps it's reign until either another team wins it the next year or they repeat.

Another point of view is the World Champion gives up it's reign at the beginning of the next season.

But what happens if all the players from a World Championship team were to join another team the following year. Which team is really the World Championship team?
