OpenGate
So there is a broken gate on the team's dugout and it is tough to close. It does not close all the way, and an overthrow to 3rd is mishandled and goes via the partially opened gate into the dugout.

Do the runners advance? What's the call?

I would think, if this is brought to the umpire's attention prior to the game as it should, it would be part of the pre-game ground rules discussion and the call would be based on whatever was decided and communicated during this discussion.

USSSA rule is runners advance two bases from the time of the throw, no exceptions.

I hear ya wagon. I'm reasonably certain the rule for this is pretty much the same across the spectrum. But if not I will eat crow--and that wouldn't be the first time lol

The umpire in charge ruled that the ball was dead once it entered the dugout, and that the runners advance two bases from the time of the throw.

The tournament director came over and said we are not playing that rule this weekend, and everyone had to return to the base.

Why doesn't the TD just get the gate fixed? How hard can that be? I can't imagine the teams will be playing for free this weekend, use some of the money.

Much harder than it appears, it's been broke for years.

Perhaps, but then replace it. That is not hard at all.

Such a shame what has happened to customer service these days....:(
