Statins
The flip side of performance enhancing drugs is drugs for a medical issue which hurt performance. I have read that statins are over prescribed and can lead to serious muscle problems. I am curious if any one has experienced side effects from statin
drugs? There are many statins such as: lipitor, simvastatin,
zocor provachol etc.

HJ - Yes it is a possibility. I schedule a blood test for all the side effects of statins every 3 months. So far this has worked for me.

I was on simvastatin 80mg for about 6 months and the Dr. took me off of it. I am on crestor now. The reason had to do with a health warning. anybody that was on it for a year or more was ago less than that had to find a new cholesterol drug. Never did ask why. Thanks Harry

I take that Simvastatin also for high cholesterol, but watching all the disclaimers for almost any drug out there makes me wonder how any of them got allowed to begin with.

Pulled Muscles I never knew I had on Lipitor/ simvastatin, plus Benicar. Switched to Crestor, and Benicar and went the whole season without a pulled ham or quad. Everyone is different, check with your Doctor.

I did not like the side effects. Research has shown that statins have improved possible heart issues from cholesterol by less than 1%. Not worth the side effects.

I had problems with simvastatin stomach cramps, weak and dizzy. Went to pravastatin and know side effects. Hitting for distance again. Everybody is different.

Simvastatin seems to be the statin with the worse side effects. There is a black label on it warning not to increase the dosage to the previously approved max of 80. Birdie has it essentially correct. All statin users should be on CoQ10 which statins deplete and which appears perfectly safe to take. Has anyone had any of the bizarre side effects like amnesia or memory loss or the serious muscle degenerative disease rhabdomyolysis?

Switched to Pravastatin 80s helped alot. Had serious muscle issues with Lipitor. No issues in last 4 years since switching - not an endorsement - just a personal fact.
Good luck lowering cholesterol however you do it.
