SOUTHERN CHAMPIONSHIPS SETS RECORD FOR 5TH YEAR
Senior Softball-USABy Maggie Lau
BIRMINGHAM, AL – The 2011 Southern Championships increased for the fifth straight year here, drawing 31 teams from seven states.
Although the summer throughout the South has been stifling, teams were pleasantly surprised with a mild heat.
In one of the largest divisions, the 50 AAA, DT Express from Georgia cruised through the championship bracket until the nail-biting, 1-run final game against J.R. Smith Trucking from Alabama (23-22). This was a rematch from a previous game that DT Express also won 14-9.
In the 55 AAA division, Columbus 55’s began dead last, at No. 4 seed, and won it all with three straight bracket wins, including the 1-run 24-23 championship victory against Sideline Grille of Georgia.
