IMPORTANCE OF THE “MOUSE RULE”
By: Connie Stewart, SSWAC Chair
and in full cooperation of “Mouse”
Now that I have your attention, you are asking yourselves “another new rule? What is the “Mouse rule?”, let me explain.
For those of you that were at the 2006 “Rock n Reno” tournament you will remember a horrific incident from sliding into 3rd base. Our very own “Mouse” slid into 3rd base with a horrible results. Her ankle and foot actually twisted completely around facing the opposite direction. I will never forget the sight of her foot facing backward and the look of pain in her face.
At the time of the incident a call went into 911 immediately and the Emergency Medical Technicans arrived. If you have ever seen EMT techs work, or have had the unfortunate luck to have used them, then you know that one of the first things they ask is information concerning your medical history. Luckily one of Mouse’s teammates was present and at her side. She knew immediately that Mouse was on a lot of medications for her medical conditions and also had allergies to certain medications. Due to this knowledge the EMT techs were made aware that the medication they were about to administer could have been deterent to Mouse and could have possibly killed her.
To prevent this from happening to anyone else we, the Senior Softball Women’s Advisory (SSWAC) are requesting the use of the “Mouse Rule” Of course this is not really a rule , nor is it mandatory. But by request, and highly recommended by Mouse, we would like to share this rule with you. It’s a simple rule that could possibly save your life.
Take a 5x7 index card and annotate on this card the following:
Medical Conditions
Allergies
Medications currently taken (with dosage and strength)
Medical Insurance
Emergency Point of Contact
Once all this information is completed , laminate this card and place it in your bat bag. Inform your coach that where in the bag it is located.
In case of emergency your coach can then present this card to the EMT techs. SAFETY is important; so be pro-active. You could possibly be saving your own life!
After immediate surgery and a four day stay in Reno, Mouse was released to go home. It is now a year later and thanks to a lot of rehabilitation and support from her teammates, Mouse was once again present at the 2007 Rock n Reno tournament and once again playing the sport that we all love! Of course, it is obvious that Mouse won’t ever try sliding again but we can all says THANKS that she is still here.
Take the responsibility and enforce the “Mouse Rule!”July 9
