Discussion: NO PITCH OR ILLEGAL PITCH

I believe the right call to be a BALL,because you can't hesitate once you start your arm movement toward home, even downward. If it was No pitch the batter would have had the option of swinging, but letting it go would be a ball...however the rules are a bit gray on that one, basically they don't want the jerking motions of Usssa,so they made the ruling...I quess

I love it...I am ready for the draft, former Fergies 3b,Damons 1b...this sounds like the game returning to its roots,if I'm not drated,I'd come out to watch it as a fan...keep the ball rolling!

Bravo...I played major when I was younger and senior until a couple years ago,it got to be to many rules.I love the idea, the problem is going to be finding umps, they won't work unlimited without $$$,but the idea is sound.Being from Maryland the central part of the country works vest and is far for all...Des Moine Iowa is nice...If I decide to play again....I'm in!

Discussion: What would you change in Senior Softball?

Hmmmm...finally a forum that gets to the point! For Nationals,a more centralized location, being from the east coast, the cost and travel time is a problem.Stay with the mat, theres no doubt when a strike is a strike the umps have enough to do determining height etc. Change the age limits, for example what determines when a player begins to degress? Some 50 yr old players are better suited to play in the next age limit such as 50-57,instead of 55,especially on the less competitive classifications.Bats,I won't go there, nothing will ever change,it never has, some cheat most don't,I do believe its as much the management as it is the players.Get all associatons on the same page, work together toward uniying the game for the overall benefit of the sport.I played major for 6 years and made alot of friends throughout the country, but no longer play due to the politics of the game, yet will always be a fan...

The next thing you know the TD will expect the guy that hit it to go get it...theres plenty of kids available to do that, give a quarter a ball or something, instead of expecting teams to go get them, its more silly non-sense.

I also agree with Bruce...just skip over it...how about music trivia,"what was the name of Mr.Bojangles dog?" I'll send a lopsided, waterlogged softball to the winner!

Discussion: Has the role of the Ultra 2 changed????

Hey Einstein...sorry to hear about your arm, when we had wars against each other ,you caught every freaking thing hit,you must be getting old my friend,ya gotta learn to duck or get the hell out of the way ~ Ultra 2's are illegal on any level in all associations here in Maryland and all levels, due to safety concerns.I also don't think that altered bats are a problem in senior ball, but seriously if they were the TD's wouldn't have a clue ,the opposing players would, especially when its passed down thur the lineup and sounds and reacts differently. The fact remains that if the question keeps rising about the bats, it possibly indicates a problem or raises some concerns which is eactly what this forum is intended to do..I still vote NO...if I have a vote and I haven't heard a compelling argument as to why I should change my mind,I'm still wearing a dent on my calf from a bad hop...3 years ago at least now it doesn't hurt !

hey BruceinGa...the U2 isn't the way to eliminate/control the use of altered or illegal bats, the assoications need to put the hammer down period...but we both know its not gonna happen! stay warm and be cool~

Thanks for the info on the associations, but I did notice that they are senior oriented. I don't have a problem with the bat,I have used it myself, because you fight fire with fire, but lets be honest in our deliberations, many top level senior players now, were not major or top level players in there youth. In other words theres a huge difference in the talent,in the field as well as at bat, should the bat be an equalizer?.You throw me outside I wouldn't purposely try to drill the pitcher, some of us have to work after the weekend,my bat control is better then that and if I never hit another tater I have hit my share ,but I was taught to hit it hard, period. When you take a hot bat,bad infields and poor lights, its a recipe for disaster. As far as altered bats, ask yourself this,if you have to cheat to win your only cheating yourself.. you play because you love to play the game, ask Donnie Clatterbaugh, nobody loves the game more then him...I bet he's NOT swinging an ultra ..its the singer not the song~!

Discussion: Has the role of the Ultra 2 changed????

The issues of the ultra2 have come up before on here and other sites and I have made my feelings known that I am Not a fan of them.Actually they are only legal in one association, as to my knowledge which means it is illegal in all others...why would that be, is it a conspiracy? Is it a coincident that the ultra has its own organization? It is not the bat that makes the game exciting,it is the players and the plays they make at the plate and in the field. Its about fair play ,sportsmanship and the friendships we make along the way.The overall health not wealth of the game in general would benefit greatly if players realized you don't need an edge, but its staus quo, they're using them so we will as well. When the Ultra 2 first came out I was playing in a open age ,non-roster ,money tourney here in Maryland,I was catching ,the leadoff hitter was on second,a former minor baseball player, the hitter it a line drive on the SS side of second,he took one step and the ball exploded his knee completely,I have only seen two other injuries worse then that in 51 years of playing baseball and softball neither was caused by a batted ball, his knee was gone....I quess if he was faster,he'd be walking without a limp at 21,for the rest of his life..the ultra 2 is an accident waiting to happen...common sense has to enter into the equation eventually...or one would only hope so!

Discussion: You make the call - umpire gets over-ruled by TD in Phoenix

Your right about that Bruce,so many different rules for different associations, you'r think they'd get it figured out by now..When I played with Fergies it happened twice in a 2 day period,by the same team, the other team substitued illegally in a tied game ,as in the thread, our coach caught it and the sub was ruled out by the umpire both times...Personally with travel involed as well as expense, just play the game the way it was intended to be played, whats the hurry, you have a 1-1 count,no fouls, tie game rules,5 run rules, home run rules, different strike zones, illegal bats, balls players etc.....expecting an ump and TD to make the right call is not asking to much..is it?

Discussion: You make the call - umpire gets over-ruled by TD in Phoenix

What a mess on an easy call..no you can not sub for that runner, unless it was done the inning before and they played the field or the runner reaches third. The ump should have known this rule,as should the TD,it should have not cost the home team, the player in the game the inning before should have just been put back on second,no harm no foul, however if they had not asked the umpire and did it on there own,the sub is out.The TD should have just put the original runner on base because he over ruled the umps decision and the runner was there due to the umps decision...and they ended up both being wrong...

Hogg...Yes JayBird was my roomie with Fergies,I will admit it...now that i don't play anymore! I enjoyed playing against Tyrell,I doubt if he knows how to turn a computer on ,but he can damn sure play some ball and a great guy! I wish there was common ground for all players on all levels, instead of so many pocket supermen because of a bat.I'm 6ft6in 285lbs,I am going to hit 'em with a 2X4 but I loved to play baseball softball and defense, but those days are long gone.People need to be honest and its not gonna happen...

Discussion: TECH' INFOR on COMPOSITE BATS & REACTION TIME.

Stoneman...I couldn't agree more.I do think you have me mistaken for Tyrell,I am the T-Rex that played 3rd base for Fergies and 1st for Damons here in Maryland.I no longer play after playing baseball and softball for 51 consecutive summers,I called it quits.I'm not saying I wouldn't play again, but the last game I played was in Vegas, our pitcher my roomie and a longtime friend got his tthumb crushed from the tip to his knuckle, from an ultra and that was on his glove hand ,on a badly lit field at night. To me it seemed nobody really cared.I have No desire to hurt someone or get hurt at this age,so now I go fishing and unless I gig myself,I don't wake up with an ache or pain in the morning.I still love the game,I always will, but theres a whole lot more to the game then just hitting home runs,if I never hit another one,I have hit my share...

Discussion: TECH' INFOR on COMPOSITE BATS & REACTION TIME.

Interesting post without question and granted there is no national injury information available,I pitched for about 20 years in the super major division,in fact I pitched the first titanium bat game sanctioned against Bell Corp...and lived...played and used the T-4000 ball and lived,I know for a fact that many players have used altered bats that are deemed legends in the game,it is a FACT ,however whats being overlooked is the other infielders and the fact that often your playing on fields that have less then perfect maintance and I have witnessed many serious injuries due to bad hops from hot bats,or bad lighting at night. The BAT WARS have been ongoing for years, don't kid yourself, the hottest bat sells more its about $ not safety ...guys that are hitting home runs now, alot of them were never home run hitters in there career, until now,the bats allow you to be something your not.Its never going to change and unfortunately its taken its toll on every level of the game....

Discussion: Why should we limit scoring per inning in the major plus class?

I also agree I hated the 5 run per inning rule,,you should just play until the time is up and I hate the time limit as well.If you do have a 5 run rule in effect and your losing earlier you can only make up the difference in the open inning...I think if your team is behind it shouldn't matter how many runs you can score per inning as long as you can tie the game but not go ahead...it'd make a more competitive game,if you have to live with the run rule.

Discussion: How to add some bat-speed to your swing by utilizing gravity!

Geeez...Gravity is what slowed me down on the bases,I don't succumb to bat speed theory when it comes to hitting. How much bat speed did Hank Aaron have swinging a 40 oz. bat at a 90 + mile an hour baseball? Its not how fast you swing, but when...timing and proper swing mechanics are ultimately important. I was a AD for womans athletics and coached softball, everything we did was directed toward mechanics and our team batting average still stand as a record at the college...392,if I had taken more time to teach them to catch we would have won more games...swing hard in case you hit!

Discussion: Loose tooth !!!!

I have sat by reading for awhile now ,this childish garbage that has transpired on here as of late...I am a rebel when it comes to this game theres so much wrong with it that after 14 championships,I asked myself...other then to my team mates, what does it actually mean? I have played against (Joe) Einstein and admire his passion for the game,we had many wars on the field when I played for Fergies and Damons,I respect him as a friend & player.I don't know Gary and also understand his concern for needed changes in the senior program across the board, actually softball in general...but Dudes its basically the same argument. The game is broken, sure you still have great games but look around...alot less teams,to many different rules, bat problems.I enjoy this website because of the on field friends I have made and played against all over the country, its a softball home dugout for us all.So man up,grow up or shut up...we're all intitled to our opinions,it doesn't always mean your right or wrong,so relate something that is pertinent to solving the problems not creating trivial ones...

Discussion: The price of winning....

Bravo softballer...they took the HR out of the game because the umpires complained about the length of the games! I agree also about player rating as well as team rankings, but its not going to happen, never has never will unfortunately.thanks to you guys for responding,of course we resolved nothing, however it did indeed show one thing...we care enough about the game to put in our two cents worth...but its not enough to buy the changes needed to the game we all love...good luck during the rest of your season!

Discussion: The price of winning....

Hmmmm..I did read it and thank you for bringing it to the discussion, but seriously I only believe half of what I read and trust 50 % what I see. When an infielder reacts to a ball when the outfielder is picking it up,theres a problem or a line drive zooms by your pitchers head with no reaction, theres a problem...on any level. It'd be a great world if everyone was being honest, unfortunately that is not the case. In softball it is different I will agree,I played super major when I was younger and one company used calipers before the bats were capped and pulled the thin walled ones out for there top sponsored teams, another would alter the bat to suit your personal tastes and they were loaded accordingly and documented for future builds. We all have seen the "HOT BAT" passed down through a line up,why would that be?I have seen bats in senior softball that the barrel ring wouldn't even fit over the barrel and they were allowed.Kids are attracted to what the bat looks like, how cool it is,but if all the bats were the same, they'd produce the same or similiar results....seeing is believing and I am not a believer...
