Discussion: The price of winning....

Thanks for the input guys,I just thought it was an interesting observation. It opens many other questions, like bat speed versus timing? Are the governing associations concerned over the health & welfare of the game or is it just a business? I know you have noticed that there are less and less players competing nationwide, its all about money and the players and team sponsors are footing the bill to maintain the game while the game suffers because of it.Bat companies are in busines to make money, but at who's expense.I love the game, but seriously, its broke and needs to be fixed if you think not then travel to play to a tourney and 3 teams are there in your class...its the price of winning

Discussion: The price of winning....

In two of the past four years I have had friends ,former softball teammates ,that have coached teams in the little league world series, granted this has nothing to do with softball, but please bear with me if you will.I have seen kids hitting home runs with half swings, inear check swings, its not technique but technology...the bat companys have to figure out ways to out do each other because they sell more bats, its there business. Its the problem plagued by the game of softball for years, people have been hurt because of it some even died, when is enough enough? Do one of these kids have to be seriously injured before someone realizes that reaction time is indeed a real and serious problem? I have seen many posts on here about what to do about pitching, hitting the middle etc.,when in actuallity the problem is the lack of concern by the assocations to not only defend its players not only by fair play but safely. What do you, the players ,I respect because you honor the game you have spent all your lives playing think about finally doing something about not only altered bats but bats altered by the manufactor...whats the price of winning?

Discussion: Increasing bat speed

I used to do some early drills that helped...I don't believe in the bat speed theory,Hank Aaron swung a 40 oz. bat,I do believe in timing, its not how fast you swing, its when you swing.Hand and eye coordination is hugely important. If you think about it,your wrists are extremely imortant,i used to be a college coach,I made my players tie a rope on the end of a ten lb. weight, stand on a step lock there elbows and roll the rope up on a stick, wrists and legs are what you hit with.I also made them swing a 34 inch broomstick while being thrown whiffle golf balls, you have to concentrate on hitting it,when you hit a softball it looks like a volleyball. We also used nerf balls on a tee, working on swing mechanics...my team set 13 records for hitting,I should have taught them how to catch! swing hard in case you hit,be safe and have fun...I hope I helped!

Thanks Diehard...yes I swung at alot of bad pitches, hell my theory was swing hard in case you hit it...I hung up the spikes, 52 consecutive seasons of baseball and softball was enough. No more aches or pains,I do miss it,but hey now I go fishin'....good luck this year to all,be safe !

There's a couple things for certain...we're all guilty of swinging at bad pitches so it evens out with bad umps and we all love playing the game as long as the same rules apply for both teams...

taits...In usssa I thought the pitch was determined by the maxium height it reached on the way to home plate...I've had pitches ankle high called strikes & needed a pitching wedge to hit it...as for the fence post deal in center field, its a sight line for the umpire to call the height, which isn't bad,but won't happen.Having played all over the country, some umps call it high some call it low,you have to gauge the zone by each one ,but the matt is the matt...no discussion.

Not that it carries alot of weight ,but I have played with Bone on Damons and played against him many times over the years...Not only is he a first class guy he is no doubt in my mind the best over 50 outfielder in the country...think not, race him!!! Good Luck Bone,Shannon never told me you even moved I'll get on him for that but you'll hook up some teams going to be damn happy they got you,I am proud to have had you as a team mate...

I pitched in the super majors for years and didn't pitch much in the 50's however I love the plate being a strike and the mat for a couple reasons. With a higher arc and a batting standing even with the plate and the ball lands on the plate it does pass all the way thur the batters strike zone and theres no complaint if the ball hits the mat or the plate it is what it is.Leaving the umpire to determine the strike zone such as in USSSA rules it can be ankle high and still a strike and the speed hmmm,I'm almost 6ft7in obviously I'd like it alittle higher. Letting the pitcher move back is great ,it helps protect them and I'm for that and maybe a bigger mat making the hitter adapt as opposed to the pitcher.

Indeed the game is ruined,on all levels and ages.Remember when small towns had teams, everybody showed up to watch the games,it used to be as much social as it was competition.Home runs are a apart of the game, the bigger the hammer (bat weight) the bigger then nail (ball)you can drive,Hank Aaron swung a 40 or more ounce bat,it has nothing to do with bat speed, its not how fast you swing but when you swing, timing is everything.Todays bats are a joke because guys are hitting home runs that honestly unless the wind is blowing out a gale they should never even attempt to hit them,it often hurts there teams, though they'd never admit it.The bat problem is very simple, there's a huge amount of money being made, and lets be honest, many associations aren't above board, money is exchanging hands so bats won't be outlawed.Teams have always had bat sponsors,I remember playing against some of the great teams years ago,Richies,Steeles, the bats I got from them were not the bats they were swinging, its all about money. The welfare of the game is suffering not only here in Maryland but around the country. The only thing we can do is keep playing and hope that someday, the problem will correct itself, but its hard to do when nobody is listening...........

Discussion: opening the borders for Fla and CA help or hurt

Honestly there is no right or wrong answer to this question, except for an influx of new players turning 50 around the country, things won't change as many guys turn 55 and move up,it hurts the 50 major division. Our team Damons Grill for example won the world series a couple years ago with a AAA team,I was the only player that wasn't on there league team,we moved up and had some success,as our players got older, many played for Fergies,it depleted our talent base, the same is thing is now happening to Thermco, and without them and Damons you've lost 2 pretty good softball teams in the upper division, with great sponsors. The year before I turned 5O Dan Smiths in Calif. had at least 6 players from the east on there team, which also is not good for the game, yes open the borders but limit the amount of players that can be acquired from out of state.Isn't the real question whats best for the game in totality? Most organizations really don't care much for the major divisons of softball on any level, young or old,its about money because theres fewer teams, therefore less money, and its all about $ believe that.So open the borders, and limit the number of players you can acquire, make the winners on lower levels move up,but you'll never get these organizations to agree on anything, but they need to find a common ground, for the benefit of the game.
