They have 'set' teams, but I'm certain you could be used on various teams, as needed. There is a 56+ league that plays on Mondays and a 67+ league that plays on Tuesdays. You are (I assume) a tournament player, and could play in both leagues if you wanted to. Contact Roy DePue @ 615-300-3682. Tell him Dale referred you. |

| Jan. 11, 2013 dMON | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: CURE ALL FOR 2013 I think what tg is trying to say (You're very eloquent and subtle, Tommy) is that the rules are set forth for this year and like it or not it's what we are to follow. (Personally, I like all changes except I was hoping for 1-1 count). I think all the associations have done a good job listening as 'tweaks' are made to the game each year. Southernson, you're right that the message board is for discussion and hopefully it will remain that way. But from a player who cannot enjoy this game year 'round, I say 'play ball.' |

With the new HR limits, teams should be able to find their own classification in which to compete. If teams loaded up to play AAA, they might quickly find out that they can't keep it in the park and choose to move to Major. Or vice versa. Most teams build their roster to suit a specific classification. I don't know that runs scored, per se, would determine a teams ratings. The HR limits that have been put in place should level the playing field. |
| Dec. 5, 2012 dMON | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Grading the Rule Changes Gonna have to agree with jsheeran on this. You customize your team to play within the rules that are set out. If you go out and get 5 guys (as mentioned 3-7 hitters) who can hit it out at will, then they better be able to keep it in the ball park at will also. I think this rule not only helps AAA by weeding out the top heavy players (by that I mean free swingers with HR on their mind), but also should beef up the Major and Major+ rosters by having these players playing where their HR's count every time they hit one. It will hopefully add to the ranks of Major and Major+ teams, You're right southernson,in saying that this will draw AAA closer to AA, but that's what they want. And that's the way it should be. To be classified as a Major or Major+ connotes the highest levels of competition (maybe a better word would be strength). There is competition at every level. I've played AA, AAA and Major. Currently on a Major team. Senior softball, whether we like it or not, has put out a product that makes you feel like you have a chance to win every time you go on the field. The fact that we are playing with some of our best friends is just a dollop of ice cream on grandma's apple pie. |

In my 10+ years of Sr. Softball, I would estimate at least 75% of players take the 1st pitch. Why? Doesn't matter if it's a perfect pitch to hit or not. Don't tell me this does not add 5+ minutes to each game. It's always been a hitter's game, then hit when you walk up to the plate!! We still don't cut the pitcher a break with any of the recent changes. This may give the pitcher 'a bit' of a break. I assume the batter would still get an extra foul on the 3rd strike. Make it even better for the pitcher by doing what we do in our league. We start 1-1 with no extra foul. You come to the plate hackin' and the games move along quickly. Assessing other changes: The AAA HR changes are great. I've touted this for the last several years for the same reasons your committee stated. Bases 70' - love it. HR and Run/inning rules for Major/Major+ - ok with me Mat should be longer and wider IMO. ATTENTION SSUSA!!!! One change that I have mentioned on this board and to Tournament Directors at various tournament would be the following: In order to make pool games mean something, allow the higher seeded team to be home team throughout the double/triple elimination portion of the tournament. If not through the whole tournament, at least while they remain in the Winner's Bracket. It would add a bit more importance to those games and possibly erase any doubt of 'sandbagging'. Just my input for what it's worth...I love this game and would play with a broom stick and a sock ball. |

It's not so far-fetched as to be totally ignored. It keeps the 'senior' equipment in the game, but rachets down it's total impact while allowing lower classification teams with effective pitchers to compete with higher level teams. I may be 'spittin' in the wind' but maybe a compromise, of sorts, could be arrived at that would be beneficial to the game as a whole. |

However, think about this. Everyone on this board has played this game of SLOW Pitch softball for many years. Think of the changes that have taken place in our (Senior) game over the past years. (I've played Sr. Ball for 11 years). Though there have been some cosmetic changes that have made our game somewhat safer (safety bases, 70' bases, etc.), most of the changes have been to enhance the offensive side of the game. Let me preface what I am about to say by assuring you that I am not, nor have any desire to be, a pitcher. BUT.... Why could we not implement some changes that would put the pitcher at less of a disadvantage, while leveling the playing field for all classifications. Thus, combining the classes and having greater participation in tournaments. Here's where most of you stop reading and say 'What 'chu talkin' 'bout Willis?' BRING BACK THE UNLIMITED ARC!!! Use U=trip rules for pitcher's. Let 'em dance, let 'em throw behind their back. Put the defenseless pitcher back on the field. Some of you pitcher's will say , "I'm not defenseless, I can defend myself, don't worry about me". But, you all know what I mean. Believe me, I would not like the rule at all, but the changes to the game would all be relative. Your best hitter might hit .600 instead of .850, but the differences would bring the game back in to the perspective for which it was invented. A good pitcher would be in great demand. I played in the Class 'A' Nationals in 1976 in Olney, Maryland when unlimited arc was the rule. We (Tennessee) played a team from North (or South) Dakota that had a pitcher that could throw it as high as the backstop for a strike. We beat them 3-2 in one of the most interesting games I've ever played. For most of you, that might seem a nightmare, but it challenged you to play the game as it was meant to be played. I'm probably in the (vast) minority here, but think about what you have talked about over and over again on this board. Would a rule like this cause you to quit the game and go fishin'? Not me. I think this rule could eliminate talk of home run limits, bats, balls, screens etc. The only thing I might add to help the batter, would be to give them an extra foul ball. Just something to chew for us in the cold weather climate. |
