Beaz, on deck does not mean standing there with a cup of water (LOL) .. I wish I had the scorebook from that game.
Bobby Kozak and Mark Baker played with us that year. Don't remember if Ernie Toth or Eric (EJ) Jackson played with us that night or if that was later in the season. Someone, may have been Mike Bolen or Craig Elliot hit one off me that probably hasn't landed yet. Sal let me hear about that one for a long long time. At least until Lafayette that year when Eddie Berg hit one over the lights. I ran into Eddie a few years back and thanked him for all the abuse from my teammates I got!

A T one thing I do remember (other than the butt chewing) was every time a home run or foul ball was hit, Mr Neale threw in a new Steele's ball.
No one even tried to go after the ones that were hit out. The kids had a field day. Never saw Avery that happy either. lol I think Killer,
Harold Kelly had a fairly good game also.

A T you should have called me.
Kim and I were wanting to get up to the mountains and were hoping we were playing.

Discussion: Talking Trash

When we were kids, intimidation was a small part of the game. Whether it was the spoken word or merely having your entire team stand outside the dugout the whole game. Teams I played for were never big on playing verbal volleyball. We always believed in letting a sleeping dog lie.

I think one thing that may or may not have been mentioned is that Bird, Ali, Sanders and Huff were ALL professional athletes paid to play their sport. I don't believe there are many on this board making a living playing softball.

When I was younger my nickname was "Serious". After having angioplasty done at age 36 I gained a new perspective on a lot of things. I still want to win as bad as anyone, but trash talking and buzzing the middle are nothing I want any part of. Winning and losing with class is something I have always believed in and I preach.

I enjoy my teammates and have made a lot of friends in this game. Having a cold beverage with some of the guys you just played against and swapping stories is why I still play.

JB,

No ... I parked my slender catcher's body on Sanibel Island with an unlimited supply of ice cold Stella close by for 3 days. While A T was out running 11 miles, I was thinking how far it was to walk back to the hotel room from my lounge chair on the beach to replenish the ice chest.

Then while I was checking out the beach "scenery", Kim wacked me in the back of the head. Is there such a thing as a grade 3 concussion?

AT do us a favor. Leave for Dalton at least 2 days in advance to make sure you get to the hotel without getting lost. And bring a car charger for your GPS because I am sure you're going to drain the battery on your phone driving around.

BJ .. Extra balls?? I guess Beaz and AT didn't tell you just HOW tight our budget is!! (lol) Thanks for coming out and helping us on short notice. I hope you find a place to play soon. I know you can definitely help a lot of teams. Enjoyed playing with you and I am sure we'll cross paths again.

Still not sure if AT (Magellan) got home yet. Never seen anyone get lost EVERYTIME we left the hotel before!!

Discussion: Spring National Auburndale

Congratulations to Good Times on winning the 50 Major bracket yesterday in Auburndale at the Spring National. Kurt and Jack, you guys played extremely well and hit the you know what out of the ball. Was great to see some old faces again. Donnie, Boomer, Moose and the rest of the ENR group as well as seeing the Florida teams. Again, congrats to Good Times and I hope everyone made it home safely.

Time limits ... there should be none. Sorry but we pay a lot of money and travel a long
way only to play 5 innings sometimes.

No game should start before 9 am. Let me say that it's not the getting up early that bothers me. I am at work at 5:40 am. It's having to play on wet fields (especially here in Florida. Not very much fun to play on.

The new one-up rule and the home team not being able to go up. I don't think it's
fair that the visiting team could bat and swing for the fences and the home team can't.
The visitors had the opportunity and either tried not to hit a home run or were unable to cash in.
To be honest, I don't like the one-up rule. If your HR limit is 7 then you hit 7. If it's
3, you hit 3.

I've said it before guys ... we can moan and groan about this rule and that rule. But you know what? It sure beats sitting home doing "honeydo's" all weekend.

Actually I have it pretty good Stick. She has "allowed" me to play ball with the rest of the kids for over 40 years now.
I guess I'll keep her around a while longer. Now I have to go find where the heck she hid my bat bag !

Doak .. I agree. The bottom line for me also is to play and have fun with guys I enjoy being around. The new friendships made and the ones found again, especially running into old adversaries after so many years and sharing memories means a great deal to me. Winning is always sweet but that's not why I continue to play the game.

I read about playing with hotter balls and bats but I am sure many of the guys that read this board still play with the youngsters and don't have a problem swinging non-senior bats. As long both teams play by the same rules and with the same equipment, I don't have an issue. Personally, I am not a fan of the senior bats, but when in Rome …

Seeding games, that's a mixed bag to me. It's is an extra night's expense for hotel rooms and is sometimes difficult to get everyone off. This past weekend we had to play with 9 guys on Friday. But usually we use these games as an opportunity for everyone to get playing time that normally would not see a lot of game time once the bracket play begins.

As far as tournaments with lots of teams, how many games do we need to play to be content? 8? 10? It's always nice to play different teams but the today's economics has curbed teams going great distances anymore. And really, how many true "National" tournaments are there in any association at any age group or class at any level anymore?? I am also referring to the youngsters divisions.
The TOC and SPA come close in senior ball and if the TOC was held in November or earlier in the same year that a team qualified, I am sure there would be an even broader representation. That's about it.

Could things be better .. sure. I mean I absolutely hate time limits once the bracket play begins. I would like to eliminate
8 am games (especially here in Florida where the ground is soaked in the morning) and maybe play at night once in awhile.
I could also sit at home and grouse about how things are not perfect and end up not playing. Everytime we choose not to play for whatever the reason, it's an opportunity lost. Why not enjoy what we have for as long as we can? I will. Or at least until my wife tells me I can't come out and play anymore.

Discussion: Rudy Strauss

Rudy was a wonderful gentleman who went out of his way to help others. He would periodically send inspirational e-mails out or just comment on life.
A few years ago he made the trip down to S. Miami for the celebration of life we had for a fallen teammate.
As Audie said, he will be missed. May God Bless you Rudy. Rest in peace.

You have to consider the "Rose" factor when it comes to the umps (LOL).

Pat,

Glad everything worked out you with the rental. Congratulations on winning the Major division. You had a very strong group and also congrats to ENR. Looks like both games were down to the wire. See .. you guys didn't need all that BP we got the past few weeks.
Sorry I missed you guys but 2 of my grand daughter's were baptized on Sunday and Pop Pop could not miss that. Had 2 days of fun and saw some old faces i hadn't seen in awhile.
Good luck to you and stay warm.
