Pat .. thanks. We were extremely fortunate, got some very lucky breaks to win 3 one run games that the other teams had every right to win. I think we used up our share of rabbit's feet and horseshoes for the year.
It was a well run tournament, weather was oustanding (how about moving the TOC to this time slot!) and the competition was as even as any tournament we've played in all year. I believe EVERY game in the first 3 rounds was decided by one run.
Anyway, hope to see you down the road and have a great holiday season Pat. Say hello to Big John for us.

Bruce,

Charles was one of the best players in the country and played on some of the best teams ever, including Mr Honeycutt's Ritch's Superior team, Elite Coatings and Steeles. It is what I consider the Golden Age of softball.

Wagon, thanks for the props ... always good to see you and Big John. I hope everything works out for you guys in the coming months.

A couple of our guys were swinging a 27 oz balanced Reebok this weekend at the Villages and liked it a lot. Dave Reed and Bobby Davis had the end load model which is what I prefer.

I agree with Brian ... durability is a big key. I have cracked 3 Ultras this year and it's getting expensive.

Curt ... took about a dozen swings with the 28 oz endload Reebok this weekend and was impressed with the pop the bat had. Tell Mark thanks.

Durability is a major issue with me .. have broken 3 Miken Ultras (one more this past weekend)in the past few months. 2 had less than 100 cuts on them and momma ain't letting loose of her wallet anytime soon!

Hopefully this bat will be the answer.

Discussion: Teams moving up that have never won a Major Event

Hey Doke ... I thought that was you posting awhile back. Hope all is well.

Don't get me started on how they rank teams and how teams are bumped. A team I played with in 1/2 century was penalized and bumped to Major Plus a couple of years ago for being ranked #1 despite the fact several of us were not on the National tournament roster. We played and qualified for other teams.

Take care and maybe we'll see each other down the road. Now playing with Morgan Keegan.

Congratulations to the Metro Stars on a well deserved championship. Baer, always good to see you. Wagon, didn't get to play you or a chance to meet up with you and shoot the breeze, maybe next time.

Also, a great job by the Veltri bunch and playing 5 in a row to force the "if" game. You guys are a class act and a great group of guys. Oh and by the way, we're meeting at the mound if you guys want to join with us again.

Audie, I heard we're scheduled to play you guys on field #1 this morning. I think the committee wants to make sure we play each other at least once on every field. Patty Mac, Horace, Keith, Allen, Bobby D .. always a pleasure to see and compete against you.

Hope everyone got home safe and no one suffered any major injuries.

Rock .. glad you got home safe. We had to "suffer" with 75 degree temperatures and no clouds here on Monday. Was terrible.(LOL)
Our pitcher Curt is fine. No problem there. Hopefully we'll see each other down the road. Good luck to you and as always be safe.

Butch .. sorry we couldn't talk more. You have to make it down for a FHC tourney again and we'll share more stories. Always a pleasure
to see you.

Vin,

Thanks for the props. It's always great to see you, Rocky, and Bob. You guys are and always have been a class team and have a great bunch of guys. Sorry you couldn't be there at the end. All 3 games, while not always pretty, were hard fought as they always are when we hook up.

Any of the 9 teams could have won the tournament. The competition was even and the scores were close in tournament play. A little luck here and there and 2 other teams could have played for the title instead of us. It was just our turn this weekend.

Our shortstop is Roger Bard and our second baseman and captain is Jimmy Gardner. Those 2 guys make me want to keep playing because they are gamers. It is my good fortune to play on the same team with them.

Did Rocky ever find his way to the airport? I thought about sending him to Orlando from Auburndale by way of Miami. He would love it down here!!

John Beasley is one of my oldest buds in the game and another reason I keep playing.

I'll e-mail you my address.

Discussion: Its Unanimous - The Best Senior Softball Players Are in California and Florida

Audie, how about a "home and home series? Maybe at North Collier County (325 ft fences) in Naples and a nice big park in California? I would
hope the other FHC teams would join in.

Or … how about if we get every Major and Major Plus team, or any team wishing to play, to commit to a 3 day tournament in the middle
of the U.S. on the 4th of July weekend. Could make it the biggest senior tournament in a long while. Just like the old days with Open tournaments,
one set of rules and any team, regardless of class could enter. Would truly have a national Senior champion. Hey I can dream can't I?

This is another case of a team being bumped because they won a national in another association (SPA). If you check the 2008 All Tournament team against their current roster, you'll see 5 of the players no longer there. At least 6 players from that championship team no longer play on the current team.
At the Winter National having to play up they were the first team eliminated.

Discussion: Calling out the SSUSA staff

Duane, not sure where you're going with the reference to the Fins from 2007 & the FHC. But just for the record, the first 5 hitters in the order
(Doc, Spencer, Matty D , myself, and Bob) along with Stevie who played in OF were off the roster. That's 6 players not 4. I don't know of too many
teams that can do that and be better right away, especially when we were already ranked in the top 3 … of course Mac is a recruiting genius. I swear
that guy has an underground network of scouts.

No, our question (sorry to hi-jack the thread Brian) was why (as our feisty captain asked in a previous post) was Deerfield bumped to Major Plus just
before the Spring National without ever winning anything? And why was Pinehurst for that matter? Deerfield was bumped on April 8th and Pinehurst
on April 10th. The tournament was held April 24th. Doesn't make sense unless they are using the FHC rankings which again … is not the same roster.

Personally .. I have always wanted to play at the highest level but I am not the manager or the sponsor. Sometimes we if we want to play
we have to play at a lower level or not play at all. I mean how much of a difference is there really overall between each level? There usually is a
couple of standout teams but generally the competion is fairly equal.

I wish we would go to just 2 or 3 divisions like Butch Drake from Travel Lodge has mentioned. By the way Butch … when you coming down to play again?

Discussion: Calling out the SSUSA staff

Brian … you guys (PineHurst) were probably moved up primarily because you are now ranked in the top 5 in the FHC and no other reason. It's why
Deerfield Storage was bumped from Major to Major Plus as they are now ranked # 1. Somehow this equates to having to move up despite the
fact Deerfield has not won any tournament. It was runner-up in their only tournament last year (Major Winter National) and does not have any
sponsorship money for national tourneys to speak of. Their SSUSA roster does not match their FHC roster either. (I am not on Deerfield's SSUSA
roster because I played Major Plus with the Fla Sluggers at the Winter National in November not that it's a great loss to Deerfield).

You mentioned about some Hollis guys dropping down (of their roster was loooked at and given approval )… sooner or later you also will face
the same problem. You are going to want to play somewhere and your team will not want to or have the funds to. Trust me on this. Talk to anyone
who has played a few years of 50 ball that plays in nationals. If some other team does ask you to go ….. on their dime ……. you'll probably go.
Because we all want to play ball. As I have discussed with Audie and many others, every time you miss any tourney at our age, you never EVER
get that opportunity back. Because of where we are located, our chances are less than a lot of other teams to play so whenever somebody
calls you play if you can. I know a lot of the Deerfield and Estes guys wanted to play.

One more thing, just because a player plays for a Major Plus or Major team, it does not mean he is of Major Plus or Major caliber. A few
years back our sponsor got a few swings in a some of the play-in games at nationals. At best he is a AAA player. Does this mean he can only play
Major Plus from now on? Most teams do not carry an entire roster of players rated for where they play, some on the upside of the team rating
and some on the down side. That is the problem when you "blanket" an entire roster with a particular rating.

Okay .. time to climb down off the soapbox. Good luck and maybe we'll talk in Ft Myers.
