I'm even more. I was on "Runner Blue" with Phil for a couple years. Man, talk about hazardous duty, lol.

Hey Jano, where were you at batting practice today? A little rain and you're a no-show. What are you, made of sugar?

Phil's a great guy and the first guy I played for in Senior Softball. I plan on stopping by his hosp. room next week after his procedure. I hope all goes well for him.

We played most of our games after in both Vegas and Phoenix after 11:00 am. When we played early morning and night games, I noticed the ball was more lively.

I really enjoy the back and forth discussion that we have on this board. A healthy difference of opinion is good, and an even greater read. But, Einstein and Replant are right; he only wants to get under people’s skin. Someone will say one thing and he will come back with his belittling style, just to get a rise out of him. It has to end. Gary, enough is enough. I know you will come back on this and ask me to “define” something, but for your own sanity, get some help.

There didn't seem to be that many Chicago area teams in Phoenix this year. Any reason, besides the economy?

I played in the 55 majors last weekend, and in the 7 games we played, along with the many I watched, the umps didn’t call anybody out for hitting in the pitcher’s box. Like Nancy said, the most dangerous time for anyone that is pitching seems to be during batting practice. You will go after bad pitches, screw up, and end up hitting one where you shouldn’t. But the way this rule is written it will never be enforced correctly. Too much is left up to the ump’s discretion, and from what I read here, their discretion is all over the place. SSUSA needs to go back to the drawing board on this.

Discussion: Timing

Hey Gary, my team played against Shones last weekend, and they were not happy that someone started the rumor that you had played with them. They said they knew who you were and wanted everyone to know that they would never have anything to do with you. With your constant butting in on every post I can see why they feel that way.

Softball4B, Sunday morning for our 8:00 game the line was back over the bag, lol. We mentioned it to the ump and he said he would work around it. Congrats on the title.

Discussion: The Batting Box

Mad dog, if I’m reading your post right, you think that if a mat is used there should be no restriction on pitch height? What if a pitch comes in so high that it comes straight down on the back of the mat? That pitch will not have crossed the plate through the batter’s strike zone. The only place you can effectively hit it (if that) is right field. Softball is designed as a hitter’s game, not a pitcher’s. You want to see people stop playing, go to unlimited arc with a mat and batters box.

Discussion: A Question for all teams

Cat, you are absolutely, 100% right. This knee-jerk, micro managing of the rankings needs to be stopped. It must be done by people who actually see the teams play. It suspiciously looks like they are moving teams up to insure that they get a good turnout at the tournaments in each division.

Discussion: The Batting Box

Gary, actually, if the ball strikes the mat, even though it doesn't cross the plate below the batter's highest shoulder and above the knee, it will be called a strike. Enviro-Vac is right. Shorter people often have to swing at pitches that are really not strikes, but will hit the back of the mat. If there is no box, they can stand deeper and be able to swing at a pitch that passes through their individual strike zone. Umps need to enforce the 12' height restriction on pitches or "height challenged" players will get screwed.

Discussion: A few comments...

Udaplaya,

I agree with almost all of the things you said, except for SSUSA being “player friendly.” You’re definitely right about the 3-day tournaments. Most people, whether they can afford it or not, just don’t want to use vacation or sick days for a softball tournament. Some of us eat, sleep, and breathe softball. Some of us don’t.

I also agree on teams staying in the classification they started the year in. No Dice earned the right to play in the National Championship by winning their tournament. If they had to be moved up, it should have been at the end of last year. I’m sure, with the successful season they had, they wouldn’t have complained. Teams will begin to be ranked correctly when SSUSA gets away from their one-man show and starts to use the tools at their disposal. Tournament Directors and opposing teams are, currently, the best way to assess a team’s ability to compete in their division. A player commission is without a doubt the ideal situation - people who will listen to a valid appeal and not just ignore everyone. Most importantly, teams should not be subjected to a higher ranking by someone who has never seen them play. That is just common sense.

Terrymac, you have fines for "cussing"? If our team had that I couldn't afford to leave the house.

Jawood, he's been moving teams up all year that haven't won big tournaments. If he feels like it, he will.
