Discussion: Interference?

Defensively was correct -- the ball was coming directly toward the baserunner's face. Perhaps he could have blocked it, but that's where "instinctively" comes in. My thought was if the runner was able to duck, the ball would have rolled harlessly into right field. The runner didn't gain an advantage, so I thought there should have been "no call", runner safe.

A ground ball is mishandled by the shortstop just a few feet behind second base. In his haste the shortstop grabs the ball and tosses it to second. The only person on second base is the baserunner who defensively catches the ball. The umpire calls the baserunner out for interferring with a live ball. I'm not sure the call was right. Any thoughts?
