March 14, 2019 umpire 14 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Runner clarification Hey guys...after reading Dave's and B.J. answers...I have not laughed so hard since Abbott and Costello's "who's on first'. B.J....We all know who ''HE'' is. The banter between ''HE '' and you has been very entertaining. |
Aug. 25, 2018 umpire 14 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: umpire mechanics for play at home As an umpire I need a clarification for umpire mechanics for a play at home. What is proper position for the umpire for such a play? It used to be a position on the first base line 8 to 10 feet up the line to make the call. I am now seeing many umpires making the call from first base line extended toward the back fence. I have a good reason to use the first base foul line. On a play that doesn't happen often, but could occur ...ball comes in to the catcher on a bounce. Ball bounces off his body and he does not have control of ball...at the same tine runner crosses the scoring line. If you are behind the catcher toward the fence...you will not be able to call no control of ball. Any thoughts ? |
Sept. 6, 2017 umpire 14 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: effect of interference call by umpire Well guys thanks for the input...but unfortunately I am more confused than before. In reading about rules for many years on the message board , I have been most impressed with B.J.'s knowledge. So I will follow his advice. Also I will be in Vegas for the first 3 sessions. If I run into Dave I will talk to him. |
Sept. 5, 2017 umpire 14 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: effect of interference call by umpire As a SSUSA umpire for many years I still have a question about interference. I have talked to umpires about 2 separate plays. Some umpires call them one way, and others another. Play number 1...Runner at 1st base with no outs or one out. Grounder to short of third. Throw to second for force on runner. Umpire calls interference on runner as the 2nd baseman attempts to throw to first to complete double play. But a throw is no done. Some umpires have told me that interference cannot be called because a throw must be made to first base. I have always called interference with or without a throw. Who's right. Play number 2...Same play except that there are runners on first and third at the pitch. Interference called at second. The second out called because of interference is on which runner...the batter-runner or the runner at third. Umpires have disagreed on this. The SSUSA rule book does not mention any effects of these plays. Thanks for any imput. |
Dec. 9, 2016 umpire 14 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Scoring of Runs - Question concerning interpretation of Section 5.7 sticks...you are correct about the timing play rule. But lets suppose the runner at first base did tag up after the catch and the ball is thrown out of play. Remember he already had first established. Therefore he would be awarded 3rd...not 2nd base on the overthrow. |
April 29, 2015 umpire 14 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: obstructed base No need to use the umpire has authority to make decisions on rules not covered for this play. On any obstruction call the runner is awarded the base, in the umpires judgement, that he would have made if the obstruction had not occurred. In this play, since the runner went on to third base he could be safe there also if the umpires judgement was that he would have reached third or maybe even home. Missing second base because of the obstruction is mute, since he certainly would have reached there. |
