Discussion: SPA tournaments, Please for those who have attended in last few years

Fred they do this because in many tournamnets home run balls and foul balls go unattended. Players do not like shagging. So they figure players will chase their own balls and tournamnet sponsors will not have to provide and lose as many during the tournamnet.

Discussion: Why not adopt ASA's rules?

SSUSA already has a full set of rules and the book is about the same size as the USSSA book. SPA also has its own set of rules in a book. So there is no reason to use ASA or any other association other than the one senior assoc. you are playing under. The problem with umpires is when tournaments use local umpires that have never done any senior ball before and have no clue to the special rules that each senior association has. They are only familiar with ISA , USSSA, or ASA regular ball. This can be a big problem.

No Call was not correct. If the batter swings at the pitch the illegal call is ignored.

Should be a great tournament. I hear that most age brackets have a good number of teams. I am sure your team will do very well. I hope I get the chance to do some of your games. They are always good ones to do. If I do not I hope I get a chance to say hello.

Discussion: 1 and 1 count-interesting comment

The 1 and 1 count will speed games up but lets face it it is not the only answer. We use it in out Florida Half century games very successfully. But the main cause of long games is not the pitching count. Teams gettin on and off the field, batters coming to bat, pitchers demanding warmup pitches and probably I think the biggest slow down is the courtesy runners. Many teams are not prepared to use them and take forever trying to figure out who can run and who cannot. It shouldnt be hard to get thru only 5 innings with time remaining on the clock. Once the last out of the 5th inning is made and we are in the 6th inning and time left we finish the 6th inning and play the 7th. So more games should go the full 7 innings.

Discussion: HELP ON THE RULES (SSWC OR ANYONE ELSE)

The ruling would Be the 2 runs score and then dead ball interferance and the closest runner to the plate would be called out, which was the runner that started on first and the batter/runner would be returned to the base he had when the infraction occurred. If the infraction occurs after the runs scored you cannot take them away.

Discussion: How to score an out when a sustitute runner is on base wrongly?

Boss..you guys with Florida Half Century opened up a can of worms when you put that new rule in. Everyone was fine and understood that if they had a courtesy runner on base when he was suppose to be at bat then he was out as the runner and than allowed to bat. Now you add another twist. I hope no one else changes the rules to allow this. Here is another twist if the so called substitute is not officially listed on the line up card is he allowed to be an official sub. In national tournaments if they are not listed on the official line up card filled out by the managers they are not suppose to courtesy run either. Your can of worms is getting bigger. Some things are better off left alone.

Discussion: First base double bag

Gary the call would be out by the umpire if in fact the ball beat the runner there. The fact that the first baseman was touching part of the orange bag was mute since you said he was touching part of the white bag also. He just cannot touch only the orange bag. There are a couple of associations that on an bad through allows the first baseman to use either bag to avoid a collision. But most only allow the white bag for a put out.

U are absolutely correct. Different organizations treat it differently. I was at that tournament, not doing that game, But Fla half century uses ISA rules. And as I said it is covered in their rule book. Good point u make

Discussion: What is the correct call?

The correct call was as it was called. Florida Half Century plays under ISA rules. Page 44 of the ISA rule book under rule 7 section 1 G. When an untouched batted ball strikes the person while in fair territory and in contact with a base. The ball is dead and the batter-runner is awarded first base. All other runners move up one base, only if forced. The play was called correctly by the umpires on the field. Now if the umpire feels the runner intentionally caused the ball to hit him than he may rule interference. But that would be his judgement.

Mike I agree with you totally. This put alot of hard feelings into what was some very good softball. I know the directors took alot of flack from the teams. Their hands were tied and only did what was told from the higher ups. I had the pleasure of umping your game sunday. I always enjoy having the opportunity to do any of your games. I hope the associations clear these problems up and they don't again put a damper on things. I look forward to seeing you around the tournament trail again.

Yes you are so right JAH it was after 2am when that game was over. I had the fortune of being the plate umpire for that game and I must agree that the 2 teams were very classy and I enjoyed some good softball even if it was early in the morning. I will also agree that the fields were not up to standards and I have voiced my opinion to the tournament organizers also. I hope this tournament grows and becomes larger next year. I also hope I get to umpire some more of your games around the country .I sure enjoyed it alot. You have a good classy team.

Discussion: Looking for a Florida Team

Thanks Nancy, Howver thats one of my problems. Two local teams that I have people I know playing on are in a different zone for Half Century. Supposedly the dividing line for the zones cuts tiny Leesburg, Fla in half, and I live on the wrong side of the Hwy dividing line. Strange situation. Thanks for the info though

Nancy if the call is automatic and correctable and not caught for 3-4 batters then do you reverse all that has occurred and go back to illegal bat batter. Good discussion

The appeal must be made before the first pitch to the next batter in order reverse what has resulted from the hit. However the questioning of the bat being illegal can be made any time. The rule says if a player is in possession of an illegal bat either while in the dugout or on the playing field he must submit the bat for examination by the tournament director for up to 30 days.If he refuses he can be suspended for that year plus two more and the suspension still applies even if the bat is determined to be legal at a later date. Better not bring an illegal bat or altered bat.
