Discussion: Cancellation of Tournaments due to weather

For those of you advocating refunds for acts of God (e.g.rain-outs), consider this. Expect higher entry fees across the board to cover that contingency.

Discussion: Catchers will wear a mask

For those opposing masks for catchers,reminder--it's not for YOUR protection, rather the BATTER'S. With Covid, masks mainly stop the transmission, not so much the reception.

Discussion: Corona Virus (COVID-19) • Part II

I don't consider myself smarter than the pros at SSUSA headquarters. I support what they are doing with selective tournament cancellations.
Further, my risk of contracting Corona virus is about the same whether I stay home or travel to a road tournament, provided I practice hygiene and social distancing in both locales.
The game itself is not a risky event as applies to spreading of any disease. We have much greater chance of serious physical injury in senior softball, and everyone seems to be OK with accepting that chance.
Play ball.

Discussion: 65s to 1-1 or not 1-1

I support the 1:1 starting pitch count for 75s division, and in fact all divisions. We just completed 7 games at Winter Worlds with 0:0 count. Our team batted only the following number of innings; 5,5,6,6,7,6 and 7. All were 65 (pool) or 70(bracket)minute clocks. We are not getting or reps at the plate even when we win 6 of those 7 games.
It's the older divisions that need 1:1 even more than younger divisions due to their natural slower pace.
And getting them to hustle more between innings aint going to happen. Need to reduce to catcher-to-pitcher throws.

Discussion: Initial Coin Flip Rule

Review of statistical probabilities. It all comes down to the final flip anyway. And its always 50:50, regardless of who calls it and what the call is. Keep it short and simple. However what is not always a given is that the flip winner takes home. For various (and odd) reasons, some will take visitor.

Discussion: COURTESY RUNNER

I believe it's unreasonable to expect the umpire to keep up with the legality of all possible courtesy runners on each team during the course of the game. Yes he must be prepared to make a ruling when there's an appeal. But the umpire acknowledgement of a courtesy runner entering should be mainly for timeout purposes. True, if he is aware of an impending illegal entry, he should not approve it. But don't expect him to catch every CR error in advance.

Discussion: Who is playing in Franklon, TN on April 13-14?

Our team would like to attend but I question how the director plans to accommodate all age divisions/all classifications in a two-day (Sat/Sun)event on one 4-plex, unless we're playing at night.

IMO--The best senior bats will out hit the best ASA bats whatever the ball.
The key is finding the best senior bat for your swing.

Discussion: rules question

So Dave, in your rules example-- "A player on a 55-Major division team cannot play on a 50-AA division team".
Isn't a 55 Major player only one rating index higher than 50AA. Can't he be one of the three out-of-rating players allowed?

Discussion: Errant Throw to 1B

Is it true that the batter-runner need only to step on the orange bag if there is a play at first? So if the errant throw described takes the first baseman way into right field or and overthrow, can't he round inside just like a clean extra base hit?

Discussion: Excessive Speed Pitch

Laws of physics seem to conclude that a given object (softball) traveling a given distance (50 feet) and reaching a given height (say 6 feet) must reach one and only one certain ball speed. Cannot change speed with changing the height and still hit the plate.
You can increase ball speed by stepping back and delivering from the 60 foot hash line. But time of flight increases. Not sure what your objective is.

I found an oversized golf bag cover (soft), padded all around with handle and wheels. My entire roller b at bag easily fits with extra room for equipment or clothing items. Keep it below 50 Lbs.

Discussion: Tournament Prizes

JT130, My players would rather pay a lower entry fee and receive nothing for a championship, than higher fees for "21St century modern items" as you state. Any trinket given is appreciated, but the real award for victory is self satisfaction of knowing you're #1. Awards have a very short shelf life.

Discussion: survey

Played with both 0:0 and 1:1. Prefer latter. Faster games, with or without courtesy.
For those advocating 1-pitch format, consider the 2:2 count. Faster game than 1-pitch because fewer walks which really slow the game. Really works well, gives pitcher two chances to throw a strike.
