| Sept. 23, 2023 Guppy7325 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Batter out of the box I have a simple solution. Why not take batting practice with a batter's box like BLD. A little prevention for what's coming so you can prepare. Don't blame BLD for you not being prepared and besides this is not going away. I umpired at BLD back in 2016/17/18. NOTHING HAS CHANGED!!!!!!! You have the solution, stop whining. Remember to follow the rules of the game. 90/10 rule. If you want change come to the convention with your proposal. That the catch all for these issue. In the umpires opinion he feels that because someone other than himself has called the situation. He can entitle whatever solution to be fair. That excludes ejection if warranted. |
| May 26, 2022 Guppy7325 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: 3rd baseline I can verify what Tim was saying. I umpired ACC and that was the first I heard of that line.. I ignored the “flight path” line or erased it if I had the chance. I had no issues with those lines and if questioned I gave the basic answer to stay wide. Being one of our SSUSA regulars, I tried to keep things as normal as possible. We had the best TD for ACC and I didn’t see any problems other than the weather.. |

| Nov. 20, 2021 Guppy7325 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Answer this. I like to add to this debate.. I play in a travel league following SPA rules with a net and 11 fielders.. I saw our pitcher got blown up and knocked out of a game. I’m playing 60’s in a competitive league, they hit middle regardless. I know the pros and cons. I also know that change will happen in the future. I would say the younger guys—. 40 to 60 could be the option and 70 plus no option.. I’m all about safety and not ego. I would like to see lightweight chest protectors be available or made for softball. Money is to be made if someone could develop one.. We are a community and we need to treat it as such…. |
| Nov. 19, 2021 Guppy7325 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Stepping out of the box to avoid being quick-pitched I will say this, pitchers are creatures of habit.. if you the first hitter of the game and he quick pitches you.. The umpire will catch him and make the correction right there establishing the boundary. After that it’s game on. Normally like the others I will give you the first time in the at bat to settle in and be ready. If asked I will grant you reset. This is softball, and the same can be said about the pitcher. If he is ready and the batter is in the box doing other than get set.. It’s on you the batter. There is a time limit between pitches and I’ve had to enforce it a few time as well.. Be courteous to the umpire and it will go along way in your experience in the batter box.. |
| Aug. 29, 2021 Guppy7325 | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Umpire Question Having played in Dalton and seeing the mix bag of umpires with associations i.e. USA/ISSA , they could have interpreted the rule like the fly ball or other by having control through the play.. That all I could think of… They used 2 man as well on Saturday and why didn’t the go to other umpire or call for a director… We do things better than the other association and this is one of them… |

Why not become part of the solution and join the dark side.. We are always looking for good, qualified and willing people to umpire… Or better yet, save a bunch of money and self umpire your games.. I’m part of several league who do this… I have no problem giving up my clicker, weekends, and attitude to watch you guys self umpire a tournament… |
| June 5, 2021 Guppy7325 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Umpires Making the Right (or Wrong) Call Some of you guys do a lot of umpire bashing on this site…We have seen a lot of situations from all over and you pick one play out thousands to point out..Talk to your area UIC or Rick Seifman if you feel the need.. As a SSUSA umpire we don’t talk about teams in the same way as you talk about umpires.. we are not perfect, but 95-99 percent accurate is better than your batting averages or fielding percentage along with pitching accuracy…. And yes I’ve blown call, but I also corrected it if I was wrong doing 2 man… most of my colleagues will agree until you take the human factor out of it.. it is what it is… |

I’ve pitched for 35 years and have the ball marks/broken digits and memories to make me smile.. I still pitch in travel leagues and cherish every moment.. I pitch and umpire, I have to have more information on the situation..... USSSA can get away with it, but not with the mat and 6-12 ft arc.. |
