Gary, the best to you. My prayers and thoughts to you and family. Thank the Lord your MD found it and your having it taken care of. It's too darn cold to play ball anyway, even in Florida! So i'll see you on the ballfields in the spring!!!!! Pat

Discussion: February Tournament of Champions Polk County

Mad Dog, TOC games are played at several venues across Polk County. There are 2-3 in Lakeland, one in Auburndale, and one in Winterdale, I believe. There are places to stay within 20 minutes of any complex but that's only if you know where you are going to play. You could also wind up driving up to an hour if for example you stay in Winterhaven area and wind up playing in Lakeland, or vice versa. Another consideration is whether or not you are participating in the pre-tourney activities which are fun (if it isn't 40 below like last year!). So bottom line, good luck with your lodging. I had no problem last year because I KNEW where I was playing. Worse case scenario, if you stay somewhere in Polk Cty you should have a drive between 20-60 minutes. Can't speak of the Kissimminee area.

Discussion: Can softballers play baseball?

I've often wondered if I could still play baseball. I, along with 6 other softballers were asked to play in the Roy Hobbs Wooden Bat Senior World Series with a BB team that has been together about 7 years but not had much luck in this event. I hadn't played a baseball tourney since early in my military career about 40 years ago. With SB players at all the key spots (SS, 2nd, Catch, LF, myself in CF, and a sometime P), we promtly lost our 3 pool games and I wondered if maybe we were in over our heads. But when single elimination began we started to come together as a team and we won 5 in a row to take the Division two World Series crown. Included in our string of wins was a 11-4 shellacking of Western Silver from San Diego, winners of the Division One crown. We played in the Minn. Twins Stadium and at the Bosox Player Development Center. Fields were awesome. I struggled with the wooden bats (too heavy for a little guy like me) but I sure enjoyed roaming the vast OF w/o the fear of running into another OFer.I'm not trying to be bragadocious (sic), but I'm posting this as a 66 y/o guy who is thankful that the Lord has allowed me to keep decent legs and OK health to still be playing ball at an age when most can't. I know it could all end tomorrow if it is His will- not mine. So I take nothing for granted and I thank Him every day and especially when he allows me to walk onto that ball field. SLOMO PS Softballers CAN play Baseballl!!!

Discussion: need a new knee

Strap, not sure if I know of any middle infielders playing with a replaced knee but there is a very good outfielder with the Quad Cities Iowa team who I've played against for years whose name is Terry ???. He was out for a while after the surgery but came back some time later (about 1 year). I saw no difference in his play. He can still run and make all the plays he did before. Hopefully he will see your post and respond. THe very best to you whether you decide on the surgery or not!

Discussion: SPA TOURNEY THANKS

I got hurt at the SPA Nationals when I collided with another player and wound up at the hospital. When the ambulance arrived the EMT asked if anyone would accompany me to the hospital since I was out of it after being administered morphine. A wife of a player from Jim and Joe's went with me though her team was playing an important game. She stayed with me for a couple of hours in the ER till she was assured I was OK. Later Ridge Hooks came by and checked on me. I just want to say thanks to these folks and the others that helped me and prayed for and with me as I was struggling to get breath. I was done after 5 games though our team went on to play 3 more. Thanks also to the EMT, Randy Goodwin, who stopped by after his shift and spent an emotional hour with me as we exchanged stories about Viet-Nam as his father and I where both there in the 60's. This experience has even more convinced me of how good most people are, and that is especially true of the folks in the Senior Softball community. Thanks everyone. Pat Herod

Discussion: CATARACT SURGERY

I'm a 3rd degree WUSSY who passed out both when I got married and when I got my shots for Viet-Nam!! Needless to say I was scared poopless for my Cataract surgery. I felt nothing and when Doc took off the bandages I told him to do the other eye. I'm an OFer and I had reached the point I couldn't get a jump on the ball until it was too late. The final straw was when a pop-up fell 2 feet behind me. I was embarassed and almost got hurt. Had the surgery in Dec and then Jan of last year. Won both the Nationals in Phoenix and the TOC in Polk County this past year. All tourney in both and MVP in Phoenix. Never won diddily before in my life. GET THE SURGERY!!! But make sure you have a good DOC. God luck, Pat

Discussion: SSUSA STAFF-Please change a dumb rule

Gary, saw the end of that game as we were warming up (if such was possible in frigid Florida that week)for ours. Not one of our guys knew why your runner was called out. I spoke to our ump and he said the call was correct. Felt bad for the runner but I did learn something. All i can say is there but for the grace of God go I. You are right in bringing this up because runners at the corners are definitly in harms way.

Discussion: What it takes to win the world

Hitman, I think your comment was meant in jest, and it is funny, but absolutely true. We won at Phoenix this year but we were NOT the best team in our division. I watched most of the other teams and concluded there were 4 or 5 that had little chance of winning unless they were getting several players later (which happens). I also felt there were 4 or 5 teams better than us and in fact one had blown our doors off in the RR. We were trying but they played awesome ball. We played them later in the tourney and they didn't look like the same team and we smoked them. Several times we could have lost but something would happen (a key hit, an opportune error, a close call going our way, a sun in the face fly ball hit, etc, etc. The softball gods smiled on us (and we stepped up) and we won. I watched another division play and one team totally dominated everyone else. In a case like that it would have taken all the planets in perfect alignment for any of the other teams to have won against this jauggernaut. Bottom line it is so much fun to be in a division where so many teams have a chance to win and that was what I saw, for the most part, in Phoenix this year.

Dicussion came up at Phoenix last week about a so-called "Impact" Players List. Does such a list exist and, if so, what is it's purpose?

Discussion: NORTHERN CHAMPIONSHIPS - DRAFT Games Schedules & Brackets

We played at the Potterfield Complex and I agree the tournament went well there, especially considering the WX. The wind never let up but the fields were very playable. wish there was some way to soften up the infield somewhat because it was very hard below the surface and draging helped but there were a few nasty hops that resulted in a couple of facial/head injuries that I saw. Joe Yacono (and wife) was the SSUSA Rep on site and he was there the entire time and responded to several issues (sliding into home, hitting the wrong 1st base bag, PPR, etc,) immediately. I disagreed with one of his decisions but he made the call when the ump wasn't sure of the senior rule and that was that. 1st time at Lansing, the Good Lord willing, I'll go back.

Discussion: Why does the ball knuckle

I've watched this phenomenon since the late 60's. My observations have led me to conclude that it occurs when really strongh men or really hot bats or a combination of both meet up with a round object. Once bat meets ball the ball loses its round shape, as does the bat. Of course this happens in a split second but if you could slow down the action you would see major distortion in both. A round ball tends to fly thru the air in a predictable arc. A distorted ball flys thru the air in a haphazard manner as it attempts to return to its original round shape. In general these balls will not travel as far (rockets, bullets etc have round noses) but they are a bitch to catch. That's why I have great respect for today's infielders, most especially pitchers. IMO this knuckling effect is a relatively new thing (40 years or so). As a kid playing BB I don't ever remember it. But with the switch to Metal bats and the size of the players increasing it has become commonplace. At the ISA world last week a really big strong hitter sent me to the fence only to have the ball drop 20-30 feet in front of me. The ball wiggled all the way till it hit the ground. I know I'm getting old but there's no way I should have misjudged that ball that badly. As I came into the dugout I told all who would listen about the above theory. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!!!

Discussion: PPR Clarification.

At ISA World I saw a pitcher take a vicious shot off his arm. The ball rolled to 2B man and he turned a DP. Ump called batter out via the PPR rule and DP nullified. Question! Shouldn't the DP count? Otherwise the pitcher got hurt and his team did also since they effectively lost an out and the pitcher was done in. I'm not a pitcher (and wouldn't be!!) so I'm not totally familiar with the rule. Just felt like the offending team got a heck of a break (no DP) and the agrieved team and pitcher got screwed (1 out vs 2).

Discussion: Gallitan, ISA, 50M Results?

We played at Triple Creek and I think the fields had 300'or so fences (since I'm a singles guy I don't worry too much about that) and I was amazed we even played at all Fri but they did a great job getting the fields ready. The umps were great overall and the competition was keen. We won our division but had we not I still would have been glad I came. I agree with "PAR" about moving the Tourney to KC. No disrespect to Gallatin. Triple Creek was nice but needed more shade (didn't play at Muni). But the people of Gallatin were really nice and great looking Southern ladies!!!

Discussion: Looking for a Chesterfield, MO team

Rammasgirl, there were two teams (over 50) in the STL area that went to a few tourneys in the past. I think they still play. One was the Base Babes and the other was Flashback, i think. Doe Laurenti knowns those ladies so You might get some info from her. E-mail me at mrherod@sbcglobal.net and I'll give you her number. I don't think there is a team entirely from Chesterfield that is over 50. Good Luck!
