Discussion: On balls and bats

Livelier balls, livelier bats. I've been running tournaments in Houston for a while. We use a 44/375 ball(has to be legible) and allow the ultra 2 or anything else but a titanium bat. We've got some pretty good teams here and some great players. I have never heard a complaint about the ball or a bat yet. Don't understand all this talk about bat/ball combo. Shaved bats has never, too my knowledge, been a problem here. Do some use them? Maybe, but doubtful. I would be more concerned with guys using steroids then altered bats. Long as everyone is using the same ball, whats the problem? I've stayed away from commenting on some of these threads in the hopes guys would get tired and move on. Just not going to happen. Said it before and will say it again, I'd rather hear guys talk about their teams, leagues, local tournaments then the same stuff over and over again. As for anyone speaking on my behalf of what I want or even for the local guys here, all I can say is, no one speaks for us. We are happy with what we have. We have a lot of teams that travel and lots of local tournaments. Bats and balls issue has never been a problem. Have fun with the game as it is. My 2.5 cents worth.

BruceAZ. If you read page 30 SSUSA 2009 Rule book, I believe that will explain it all. Your 60M+ was not legal, but then again I have seen stranger things happen.

Don't believe its a valid protest. Be interested in hearing from a Professional Umpire though. Read SSUSA 2009 rule book. Page 12 1.53 A. Think that clears it up.

Discussion: Balls getting dumber...

I am curious. In Houston, we have been using the 44/375 BAM ball in our local tournaments and the guys love it. Like to know if your using it where you play?

First, I agree with stick8. Second, and someone tell me this is wrong thinking, but if you put another fielder in the outfield, instead of around second base, aren't you inviting more people to go middle? Just a thought. I am not in favor of the 5th infielder, its the ppr that is ruining our game. Just my 2 cents.

Discussion: Thanks

Jim Tharp and I would like to thank the 18 teams that played this past weekend in the Firemen's Benefit tournament in Pasadena, Tx. It was a huge success thanks to all that participated. Bit hot, but we are getting use to those 100 degree days. All of you made this successful and it terrriffic dealing with such great teams and guys that play.
I'd also like to remind all about the Benefit tournament for two of our local players that need our help. October 3 and maybe 4 in Northwest Houston. A benefit for Ewald Schadt(ALS-Lou Gehrig disease) and Bibb Harrison(Severe stroke). All proceeds going to these two super fine gentleman who need our assistance. Hope many of you will join us on that day(s) as we will have some great softball and some super items to raffle off. Just doing something to help two friends of our softball community and personal friends of mine. Contact me if your interested.

I have read the SSUSA 2009 rule book about A. Page 56, 8.3(1). Not an appeal play. Runner is out. If there has been a change, please let me know. Haven't read ASA rule book, so don't know what their call is. Anyone else know about this call?

HUGGNZ--Several of us belong to HOG(Harley Owners Group) Do weekend rides with the group or we just head out on our own. Also belong to Patriot Guard. For those brave soldiers who did not survive. We assist the families in any way we can at the church and cemeteries. I can't describe the feeling when you get hugged by a family member of the deceased and tells you how happy they are that people do care. Hope some you also belong to this or HUGGNZ's group.

thebull
I got mine at Academy in Houston. Umpire shin guards. Light weight, not expensive. You can hit and run with them on. So far they have protected me from direct hits on the shins with no problems. Just my 2 cents

Just a quick 2 cents. I don't like mandatory equipment. Leave the game alone. When I can't pitch anymore, I am moving to the outfield(those who know me can appreciate this one) lmao.

APOLOGY--rwells-----Robin, please accept my apology for my response. It was inappropiate on my part. YOUR truly a good and sincere person and I was wrong to treat you as I did with my response. I do apologize. Possibly down the run, we'll be able to work together. Good luck on your tournament.

rwells, A phone call to me would have been sufficient instead of a history lesson. Stop playing Follow the Leader and losing credibility. I started the name EarlyBird not hcssl. Also, this is the second tournament in Pasadena, not the first. But the name stays with me. As you will recall, last years first one in Pasadena was flooded out by someone who turned the sprinklers on all night and flooded us out. We moved it that morning to your park, Thanks to Jerry Fairlies and yourself. Got any ideas who flooded the fields? Take care of Bayland Park and don't concern yourselves with what Jim and I do. You don't see us putting a message in your thread. We don't need to.
PS There is a resaon Jim and I get 26 plus teams to play in a tournament.
Next time call me.

Armiho and Mad dog. I do like to keep teams in same bracket, but often have teams, different ages, playing against each other(lower rated team will get runs). Also am open to allowing some different age men into different age brackets. lol Been done before. Prefer the correct age bracket, but guys get hurt, need a player or two, and this is a get your season started, fun tournament. Its exactly what it has been for 6 years. Come out, meet old friends, make new ones, enjoy some good competitive softball. Have had a lot of the same teams for 6 years, so it must be fun. Just wanted to clear that up.
PS Don't forget to slip the green stuff in the TD's back pocket. See yall soon. GT
