Discussion: New Mat Size

I don't think that pitchers over 50 have as much trouble finding the strike zone as the umpires have in being consistent with what they determine a batter's stroke zone to be.. The strike mat brings a measure of consistency to umpiring.
The umpires in our city leagues differ so much from one to another in what they individually call as a strike zone, you can't even remotely be sure what they will call a strike. To find one that is consistent during a game is a real bonus. The mats would help our leagues. We start batters with a 1-1 count. A bad strike call can put a batter in a real jam.
As always, a batter should be ready to hit.

They are actually 21" x 35". There is 2" black on each side of the white painted home plate.
It helps pitchers get strikes called on pitches that used to cut the corner of the plate but were seldom called as strikes.

Discussion: All 44 - 375 balls are not created equal

Hombre, the best overall balls are any of the Trump Balls that have Micro Cell Technology (MCT). They especially perform heads and tails above any other 44/375 or 44/400 balls when it is hot (above 85 degrees). They are engineered to lose no compression in the very hot weather, which is what causes most balls to feel like a sock. I have read that for every degree above/under 72 degrees, most softballs lose/ gain 5 lbs of compression. The TRUMP balls also perform great in cooler temperatures. No ball is better, in my opinion.

Kevin Schullstrom at Anaconda Sports / Trump Softball can give you the real skinny on their balls versus other balls at 1-800-327-0074 ext 210. The prices are the best, also.

The worst of the worst that I have used so far is the A.D. Starr 44/375 Spirit ball. a couple of years ago ,our organization mistakenly used them in a pretty large tournament in 90 degree weather. The TD caught heck from EVERY team about those balls.

Discussion: Past Weekend - Cols., Ohio

Thanks, CAT.
It was a great day for softball. Pete Shaw sent us some of that Florida weather that he promised earlier this year. The competition was great, but the comraderie was even better. All teams played three games with an option for a fourth.

The Trump NSA 44/400's just flew of the Mikens and Combats as evidenced by Stafford Sales victory over Schone's 35-28 ..

In their next game Schone's was tied 17-17 with Louisville Metro Stars after 6 innings. Schone's then posted 27 runs in the top of the 7th en route to a 44-24 victory.
Teams were experimenting with their rosters as part of the premise of this Spring Training get together. Still, the level of play was high.

My thanks to the participating teams: Schone's, Dayton Legends, Staffod Sales, Louisville Metro Stars, and our 10 man squad, the Central Ohio 50's.
I'd like to do this again in October to get ready for the winter tournaments, either in Columbus or in another midwestern city.

We are having a small pre-season tournament/practice next weekend in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, April 21

The weekend of July 20-22 we will have a much larger tournament that should draw 70-75 teams.

We have a couple of quality 50's and 55's teams in the Columbus area that would like to play other teams from Ohio and from nearby states in a preseason scrimmage session on Saturday,April 21.. We would possibly like to rotate this to a different location each year.
I have 3 diamonds reserved to accomodate 12 teams, but we'll go with a minimum of 4 teams. We'll play at least 3 games
This will be for the comraderie as much as the softball.

I was huffin' and puffin' at BP Tuesday. I went to the ER late afternoon Tuesday and had a stent put in a coronary artery Wenesday afternoon to open a 95% blockage. I took BP two days later on Friday and Sunday ( with the Doc's robust OK ) and felt great.
The downer: I took a treadmill stress test with an EKG, and an echocardiogram with radioactive dye just ten weeks ago. The Doc said I did a great job and was good to go.
Still, something was not right as I was breathing way too hard in BP.
Listen to your bodies !! The Cardiologist at the hospital said that stress tests give off more false negatives than false positives. Soapbox Closed.

I'll check on Diamond availability in the Columbus area Tuesday afternoon for Saturday April 21. A relatively small, inexpensive pre season tournament works for me.

There are no 40+ leagues in Columbus that I know of.
There are two 50+ leagues in Columbus if you are eligible. One is on Tuesday run by the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department. I run a 50+ league on Wednesday in Columbus, the Central Ohio 50's Softball League.
I think that there is a 40+ league in Westerville

Discussion: Miami, Ohio Tournament

There is a seniors tournament on Friday, April 27 in Miamitown, Ohio .
I had a 55's team to enter from Columbus, Ohio but tournament Director Dick Ernst (812-667-5587) graciously explained that we were a day late and a dollar short. His tournament was filled and there were no 50's teams for us to play.

If anyone is interested in gettting together for a fun, small, pre-season, low cost, non sanctioned tournament in the Columbus, Ohio area, let me know and I'll try to find some diamonds.
Dayton, Akron, Cleveland, Cincy, Bedford Heights, Marion, Indy, Toledo, Pittsburgh, anybody.... let me know and I'll see what we can do.
Michigan is extended a special invitation !! lol

Have it in Columbus, Ohio. The local Chamber of Commerce states that Columbus is within a days drive for 2/3 of the U.S. population. Berliner Park has 31 diamonds, the most at one facility anywhere. Columbus recently hosted a girls 18U fastpitch tournament with 450-500 teams. That same tournament once had 724 teams.
