Discussion: Heavy Heart

It is with great sadness that we have lost a great man, husband, father, teammate, and friend. John Napoli (55) pitched for LB softball in 50AAA. Unfortunately after playing a double header, John began not feeling well. He returned home with his wife, and suffered a major heart attack. John is well known, and loved by so many in his community for who he was.he was a very passionate man, both on and off the field. John was always there for those that needed him. John helped numerous people in so many ways. He was really that guy that would give you his last dollar if you needed it. Prayers for his family, friends, and teammates are greatly appreciated.

Discussion: My conclusions from 2 prior discussions, what are yours?

Gary19- Run limits do multiple things:
1)Levels the playing fields. In USSSA, ASA (now USA), etc. there are 7 (USSSA) and 6(USA) divisions. Without run limits, SSUSA would need more divisions, or they would run the risk of losing teams due to an inability to compete. Guys that played major, AA, and A most of their career, playing guys that played C most of their career clearly have the advantage. That advantage is reduced when a team is capped to how many runs they can score per inning until the open inning.

2)Lengthens the game. Better bats, better balls, and the fact that offense doesn't decline as rapidly as defense (speed, arm strength, reaction times all decline quicker than hitting). Without run limits, you might very often see 3 inning games or 2 hour games.

3)Rewards consistency - with the run limit in place, a team that consistently gets 4-5 (6-7 in major plus) every inning is in a better position to win the game. Scoring with this equipment is not difficult, and without the run limits, a team can throw up 4 zeroes and have (2-3) 20+ run innings and run away with it.

When you consider the parity that is in the Senior game overall, the run limits are a big reason for that. The game is different from USSSA or USA Softball open divisions, and that is also a good thing.

Discussion: Stepping out of the front of the box?

DC Pete said - "Really can't understand why anyone wants to make a big issue out of this since having one foot step in front of the box doesn't give the hitter any real advantage"

Why would you step out of the box to hit the short pitch that will hit the front of the plate? So you don't have to hit it at your knees? Why? Because it is an advantage to hit the ball at your belt or higher. If there was no advantage, guys wouldn't do it. This is slowpitch right, where good hitters hit .750 and higher. So the advantages a pitcher might have is hitting the corners that might turn a .750 hitter into a .500 hitter. Batters that might whine over it, should just get over it. Do all umpires call it? No. Do all umpires call 6' or 12' the exact same? No. If an umpire is calling it, we as players need to adjust and not be disappointed that an umpire is enforcing the rules of the game.

Discussion: Just Plain Wrong!!!

Curious as to why runs against is the first tie-breaker, when thereading are other factors that can play into it? Example, 2 teams playing on a field with the sun in the batters eyes or wind blowing in at 20 mph, the score will be lower, so a 9-8 win is a huge advantage over two teams playing the exact opposite fields (sun in fielder's eyes or wind blowing out at 20 mph). That game could be 30-28, due to the conditions. Run differential is a more fair evaluation than runs against.

Take 2 identical maps. Cut Ca and adjoining states then flip the cutout over and place on the east coast. You will find that it is pretty close to east of the Mississippi. Allow the east and west to pick up anyone they like from east/west and no team will be dominate."

This wouldn't fix anything. This would make it worse. Then you would definitely have the teams with sponsorship willing to spend endless amounts of cash, could get the best players in the country and form national all star teams. You'd end up with the same classifications as USSSA has, with similar team quantities. USSSA- 4 major teams, 9 AA teams, 17 A teams, etc.. If you do away with regional restrictions (would be just fine if all players had to live in same state, or within a maximum number of miles from Coach/Sponsor, whatever). I would argue that those restrictions would help to increase competitiveness.

That is taking nothing away from teams building the best teams they can with the current guidelines.

Tim,
I would argue that when guys are on 1st and 2nd, the IDB rule would be called on a line drive where IF is not called. So if a defensive player intentionally let's it drop and it kicks away and the runner advances, you're going to send him back because of the IDB? Once you call IF, the runners know they are free to stay put regardless of what happens after that.

Dave, is Summy's teams possibly the most successful "organization" in senior softball's history? It seems Top Gun has many team in different age brackets as well. Just curious what dynasty might be the most successful in Senior Softball history.

Discussion: WHY SO RESTRICTIVE

Why the run restrictions? Let's look at it a little closer:

Seniors typically slow down defensively before offensively (reactions, speed, arm strength go before offensive skills),
so naturally it becomes easier to hit against senior teams.

Senior players get to use better bats, and hit better balls (in Vegas at least) compared to "upper level" teams in non-stadium games.

In order to prevent 20 and 30 minute half innings, you have to have run limits.

With time limits, and without run limits, you'd have a lot of 3 and 4 inning games.

Homer limits adds value to players that can play great defense, and might only hit 600-650 (which isn't a great avg in Senior softball).

The best players are those that can do it all on both sides of the ball. Homers gone, they'll basehit it, and pick it defensively.

Discussion: Still waiting for a rational answer

If you were a major player as a 60 yr old (or even 63 or 64), you will be a major player as a young player entering the 65+ age group. You won't be considered a AAA player unless you appeal, however the team is ranked on a combination of players individually and overall team strength.

Discussion: Safety of the Game

In the 5yrs, I've been playing 40's, haven't heard of anyone being killed. The first year the mask wasn't even mandatory (yes I pitched a couple of times). It is a fine line of giving the customers (us players) what we want (good equipment), and ensuring safety. With some of the 40 yr olds, these bats with the Rock, is about equal to the USSSA Men's Major with their 225 testing bats and Stadium ZN. As guys get older, they obviously don't hit the ball as hard (without the right "supplements" or altered equipment). Once we start playing with the new microelectronics ball, we should see if the Rock remains, and if so for how long. In other associations we use classic M's in 40s which works well too.

Discussion: Today's "super" bats

You guys say the bats would fail a compression test. What are you basing that on? What compression number do you think these bats that are 1.21 BPF (which means they are better than USSSA bats at 1.20BPF. Which means they will have a lower compression ratio to get the increased performance. I believe for USSSA it has to be above 220 (or 1450psi). So for these bats, 200? I'm all for testing them to make sure they are good, but that is easier said than done. So do they test at the beginning of each day of the tournament to make sure it is still good for that day and place a non-removable sticker for the day? Retest every day of the tourney to make sure somebody doesn't shave the bat after getting it tested? Or to make sure that after a bat tested right above the limit, the bat wasn't taken to BP and another 150 swings put on it, to get it down to 185? What's the answer. Going to crap balls isn't it. As an infielder on a 40 Major+ team, I don't mind the Rock ball. It comes off hard, but bounces pretty true. Looking forward to trying the new ball. The problem with the Trump Stote was the absolute loss of performance in 90+ weather. Then when you see guys with worse swings then you find on an Alabama front porch hitting them 350, when the ball is a sock, you know the bats have been altered. I know there are guys on one of the top teams in the country removing loads from their bat. Trying to say they aren't shaving them or anything, but still altering them. It's a shame, but it's the sport we love. Just my $.02...

Discussion: Spot the Major + player

I know a fairly successful 40 Major+ team that would love some spinsorship. For the last 4-5 years they have been at or near the top of the bigger tourneys, with everyone footing their own bill. Guys at this age (pre-retirement age as I know some retirees are on fixed incomes), that can't afford the game of softball, really should evaluate if they can afford their hobby. If not, find another one. I understand playing on a sponsored team is a huge honor (played for 2 great sponsors over numerous years). Always made sure they knew I appreciated all they did.

You have some of these major+ teams that are not only spinsored, but offer cash performance incentives, and maybe even "sponsor" more than just the softball. It is great for them, but with the right mix of great guys and players, a non-sponsored team can compete.

The biggest difference is people that pay their way, probably won't stick around as the 13th or 14th guy that gets limited playing time. Just my $.02

Benji, you got to realize that most of the guys moving up to 40s come from the era with E through Major in the major associations. Sandbagging starts there, and the mindset just continues.

Discussion: Spot the Major + player

In the 40's, I would say player 2 is more valuable. There are a lot more guys that can hit .650 with hitting homeruns, then can hit .700 without hitting homeruns. With the bats and balls we use, there aren't many 40 yr olds that can not hit homeruns. I've seen better swings on front porches than some of these guys have, yet they can still hit homeruns. Speed is also one of the best assets a player can bring, as that usually goes before the power.
