Discussion: Scrap Iron loss of a great player and person

My sincere condolences to his family, his friends and his teammates. I was honored to be a part of the Scrap Iron Family for years. I am currently going through radiation, chemo and fighting the good fight. If I do not win this battle, perhaps I'll get to play with Skip.

Discussion: McKinlay Follow Up Question

Dave, Dbax asked a question regarding whether SSUSA will allow McKinlay to participate in any future sanctioned events. I'd like to know the answer to that and to further elaborate, what is SSUSA position on membership for felony convictions? I realize it makes no difference what I think regarding the decisions made by SSUSA, but everything I did and shared with players and bat enthusiasts was done in good faith and with the belief the P-413 was a legitimate bat and a product worthy of the sport. My investment in GSC to help get the bat to production was my entire savings and I figured if my cancer affliction won out, there would be income coming to my wife. Clearly with the fraud reality by the McKinlays, there will be no repayment to me. All that said, will he be allowed to participate in future SSUSA events? Therein lies the question. Thank You.

Discussion: Steve McKinlay

I recently received a notice from the California Correctional Department notifying me that Steve McKinlay is being released from prison on January 8, 2018. Amazing that one can defraud investors, friends, church family out of $3.5 million and spend just 1.5 years incarceration for it. We truly have a screwed up justice system.

Discussion: cortisone shot

I have injured everything playing ball. I have had cortisone shots and everything else. Some years back, I was surfing in CR and got slammed off the bottom on my non throwing shoulder. Played probably 2-3 seasons in heavy pain until I decided to have rotator surgery by an awesome ortho surgeon. Surgery was in mid November. Pretty serious procedure but I was playing ball again in April. Not everyone has the same experience or timeframe for healing. Don't rely on the cortisone. Go on this site and ask players in your area who they might recommend to go see.

Discussion: 60/65 Major World results

Sorry Dave. I never intended to start any dissension with my post. I simply wanted to follow some of the divisions that have teams playing of guys I know and have played with or against. It would be great however for those that can't be there for whatever reason.

Discussion: 60/65 Major World results

Is it a possibility/feasibility that SSUSA might be willing to write in the teams that advanced thru the brackets at Worlds for the 60 and/or 65 Major division. I did not get to play this year and my good friends played in both divisions, so I followed it as closely as I could but blindly I might add. I let a couple guys know that I followed the tournament basically through their games and through their description of game results.

It would be much appreciated if SSUSA could/would fill in the brackets and post OR perhaps take a photo and text them to me. Hard on the psyche not to be there playing.
Thanks,
EA

Discussion: Throwing arm has gone bad.

My right shoulder area became sore, then got even worse from diving for balls in the outfield. I hurt it on one trip to Costa Rica when a wave sucked out and threw on the sand, shoulder first. In 09' I finally gave in and had surgery (out patient). They disconnected my bicep tendon, shortened my clavicle, and went into the rotator cuff to clean out the scar tissue and bone spurs. Evidently spurs were sawing away at my biceps tendon. They drilled and fastened a titanium anchor and reattached the bicep tendon. That procedure was done in November and I was able to play the following April/May.

What you may consider doing, is post where you live and in your post ask who may have had a good experience with an orthopedic surgeon. Mine practices in Montrose, Colorado and he is fantastic. Good luck with it but bite the bullet and have it done.

Discussion: Bad experience for a Class Tournament - Worlds

In my first SSUSA Worlds held in Phoenix (99'), I was on 2nd base and a ball was hit to shallow RC. I beat it to and around 3rd heading for home. I slid across the base line and of course was immediately called out to my shock and embarrassment. I did not know the senior rule but I never did that again.

In my opinion, we play to win and we play to obey all the rules. The umpire gave a sad display of his performance and the runner should have been called out at the plate. Learn the rule the hard way like I had to.

I want to send our best warm wishes to all who have been impacted by the recent hurricanes and we are thankful that our family in Florida and South Carolina is safe during the aftermath of Irma. To all our friends and softball acquaintances and customers, we wish you God speed as you begin cleanup and repairs. So many dogged a bullet but not all. Be safe!

Discussion: Outcome of GSC

This is the last statement I intend to make on this topic. Thanks to those who responded. I think there were quite a few GOOD people involved in the company or who believed in the product that were also hurt. The sadness that so many people were duped over time was a terrible result. In our case, we have moved on and are thankful for the blessings we have received. I will not get any return but I am alive and that is enough. Dealing with prostate cancer has been a tough road but it could be so much worse. I was angry and could have dealt with this differently but elected to treat it as a life lesson. All of us are aging and this life is not endless on this earth. We have been blessed to play this game called softball. I hope we can play this game in Heaven. Good luck to all of you I know and have had the privilege of meeting, playing with and against since 1999.

I play ball with Hal in Florida. He is a solid player and a great guy. If anyone out there has had experience with vertebrae fusion or this type of procedure, PLEASE chime in and give Hal some feedback. Quite a few of us care about this man and your input is gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,

Discussion: Outcome of GSC

As some of you may be aware, I was one of the investors who was scammed by Steve McKinlay and was lied to by both Steve and Kristi McKinlay. I was promised a 100% ROI and was given contractually a 2.5% ownership in the company for a $100,000 investment. I was told my capital investment would allow the bats to be manufactured in the following 30 days from the date I wired all of our savings to them. I was contacted some 2-3 weeks later and asked for an additional $20,000 loan for a 60 day period. I received significant positive projections of sales that gave a strong positive cash flow and one of the things I was hoping to do, was to establish an income flow for my family if in the event of my passing.

As time moved along and I began to see flaws in the evolution of GSC business actions, I started to request repayment of my investment and volunteered to waive any return on my investment. I got promises, pep talks, false reporting from both Steve and Kristi McKinlay. I hired an attorney to help me recover my capital. Kristi McKinlay promised she was going to send me payment of my loan and the payment would be forthcoming. Promises were given over and over and never a payment was made.

I was in our yard in Florida when my cell phone rang and the District Attorney on the other end of the line shared with me the McKinlays had just been arrested on charges of fraud and were taken to jail. I was told I would be contacted about the process. The process was lengthy. A significant amount of documentation was requested in order to prove that we were victims. I had signed executed contracts, proof of money being wired to them and lots of emails to/from Steve and Kristi. Over the course of time, it turned they had duped quite a number of people for a significant amount of money. I gathered and sent all my documentation to the DA. As time went on, Kristi was released from jail and had a number of people speak to the judge on her behalf and share how she was an upstanding individual. I did not get a chance to speak with the judge and share with him the numerous conversations I had with her in our attempt to recover our funds.

This past spring/early summer, the case went to a judge. Attorneys who represented certain investors attended the hearing and pleaded that the investors who had taken real estate holdings as security should get a first and highest level of repayment over those investors who did not have real estate security on their investments. The judge listed and awarded a select few to receive first repayment percentage of any real estate sales that take place. Those investors who have no real estate security get paid a percentage of remainder left over after the attorneys representing the estate get paid.

A month ago we received a check and it may be the last check we receive. It was a little over $400.We were duped by crooks who used God as the carrot. He will get out of jail in another 2 years.

Some of you know these facts and many of you have called to ask me about our situation. It is time to share the fact as I know them with you.

Discussion: PITCHING SCREEN USE

Mike, we use a screen in our Florida league play. I have been playing with one on the fields for 2 seasons now. It is a normal 3'X 6.5' screen with wheels so it can be easily moved depending upon whether the pitcher is left or right handed. It is mandatory.

The ruling we use, is first batted ball to hit the screen is a dead ball. Second batted ball to hit the screen is a strike. Third batted ball from same batter is an out.

I play outfield and infield and frankly I have not seen a problem as a result of using the screen but from the standpoint of safety, I have seen the screen save significant injury from the standpoint of high performance bats, high compression balls and tapering reaction time by players.

The pitchers in our leagues may field the hits at their sole discretion without penalty.

Hope you are well old friend.

Discussion: Friend to get a hip Replacement

My friend and teammate has been told he needs a hip replacement. We play with young bucks in the mountains and he has been a skier for decades and a really solid pitcher. If you have experienced this procedure and would be willing to share info and/or advice, please chime in here. He is getting cortisone shots and trying to figure out what and when to do something.
Thanks very much,
EA

Discussion: Memorial Day Thank You

On this Memorial Day week-end, I send a warm and genuine thank you to all the Veterans who served this great nation and a sincere thank you to those veterans who lost their lives to give all of us the freedom to do as we wish and for the opportunity to play ball with so many of you on the diamonds across the nation. I am grateful and proud to have met so many good men who share the passion of playing senior ball as I do.

I am also thankful that God has blessed me to be able to play ball at a competitive level and to keep me upright as I continue to battle prostate cancer. Thank you Lord for everything.

Good luck to everyone soon to be competing at RockNReno. I'll miss this one.

Be well,
Ed Andrews
