| Feb. 15, 2012 hombre | Topic: Bats Discussion: Oooops there goes another U2....... LeeLee's right on target. I'm not a crusher like you, Webbie, but I still break 3 to 4 bats a season. I've found that the Combats last about 3 times as long as the Mikens. They do take a little longer to break in, but you can also hit them in colder weather than the Mikens. The red Maxload seems to be especially fragile, as does the EL Melee. I currently have a gray Combat and plan on buying another blue one at the CST this weekend. I know a number of big hitters who have shopped around and have returned to the Combats. |
| Feb. 1, 2012 hombre | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: League play HR rule In our local league, before each game the teams choose how many home runs they want allowed, between 1 and 10. If one team wants 10 and the other want 1, they strike an average and allow 5 and then it's one up. Of course, the strong teams usually go for 10 and the weak teams 1. However, sometimes both teams may go for 10. They use USSSA balls and bats and there are a lot of HRS. It's an open league where you find all level of players. |
| Jan. 17, 2012 hombre | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Impact players In the 2011 SPA rule book concerning impact players, it states that once a player turns 70 they will be removed from the impact player list. The list on the SPA site has nine 70 year old's players named. I wonder if the rules will change in the 2012 rule book? I thought that the reason for the impact list was to protect lesser skilled players from those players who hit the ball very hard. It's been my pleasure to play with and against quite a few of the listed players and I can tell you that there are a couple of players on the list who, while being great defensive players, couldn't break a pane of glass with a ball that they hit. I think some of the players on the list are there because they have played on M+ teams. |
| Jan. 11, 2012 hombre | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Preferred Tournament format I broached, or whined about, this topic earlier in the season. We played several tournaments that gave you 2 pool games and then double elimination with a guarantee of 5 total. If you lost the first 2 elimination games, you could, theoretically, lose 2 elimination games and win the tournament. At least that's the way I understand it. This is opposed to a format with 3 pool games and double elimination. My problem with the first format was that to work your way back to the championship game after a single lose, you had to play several more games, thus making it extremely difficult to win from the losers bracket. In a small bracket it wasn't a big deal, but in a large field it was almost impossible, IMO. For those analytical thinkers and those just plain smarter than I, why would the tournament director favor one format over the other? All other things being equal, I would opt for the tournament with the 3 pool games and then double elimination. Thanks |

I would play for a lesser team rather than play for a team where it was set in stone that I was a back up. If I were given an opportunity to compete for a job, that's different. If my best wasn't good enough, I would move on the following year. I'm a firm believer that when the elimination round begins, you put players in the line up that give your team the best chance of winning. To me, tournament ball isn't where you put your old friends and prima donnas in the lineup just to keep them happy. |

Anytime slow pitch softball is discussed, so is Pinch Harvey. I have yet to meet anyone who considered him any other than the best softball player this region ever produced. They speak just as highly of him as a man. When I first read this post I didn't realize that Stan Harvey and Pinch Harvey were one of the same. I wish that I would have had the opportunity to meet him. Mike, are you going to be at the CST this year? I'm one of the many who are returning to the Combat. It would be good to see you and you might sell some bats. |

As far as tournament selection, the type of tournament, the location, and past experience are primary factors. We are fortunate that our sponsor pays entry fees and provides uniforms. As for as selecting a team, I want to play for a competitive team, a team that knows how to play and win. I want to enjoy the company of my team mates on and off the field. The coach must be honest with the players. With all that having been said, for me the game is about having fun and if I'm not, it's time to find something else to occupy my time. |

Most of those who engage Gary 19 in pig wrestling may be missing the point. Gary's posts are a cry for attention from an underachiever who lives in a fantasy softball world in which he is of some significance. For some, negative attention is better than no attention. He is a self admitted hypocrite who uses the same high performance bats that the real senior tournament players use. His continual "special bat" reference is simply a term he uses to get under player's skins. If the bats weren't of the type that 95% of real senior ball players use, they would be special. It's just his insult. When he can't turn a discussion into a PWM about bats, he will use a sarcastic, negative or otherwise insulting remark to vomit on the thread. This is to elicit a response that he feels gives him legitimacy on this board. When he can't make a legitimate argument, he resorts to putting words in other's mouths. Gary isn't familiar with the experience of camaraderie, fellowship, and athletic excitement that the rest of us enjoy. So he cowardly sits at his keyboard questioning the manhood, intelligence and motivation for playing of the thousands of players who he doesn't know or know anything about. I'm sure that if could muster the testicular fortitude to play and find a team that would have him, he would learn much from the players he insults on a daily basis. |

I was hitting with some of the young guys about eight weeks ago and they were using this bat. Some of the hits were pretty impressive. Anyhow, one of them said he really needs the money and has offered me a used one for $75. What say ye bat experts? |

Jeff Dunham has Walter, Pawn Stars has Chumlee, Whoville has the Grinch and the SSUSA message board has Gary 19. This board is supposed to be a place where senior softball players can discuss softball with others who share their love and enthusiasm for the game.It's a place where we can exchange information, gain knowledge and talk with old friends and make new friends. It's supposed to be a positive experience. Most threads on this board have become little more than a platform for Gary 19's hypocrisy, sarcasm, negativity, and provocative disparagement of other players and the game of senior softball. Lately, there have been several very positive threads on this board. Gary 19 did not comment, because he has nothing positive to say. When the staff banned Einstein, there seemed to be an increase in the number of new members getting involved. The tone was much more positive and informative. The staff could take back the board and make it about softball again instead of Gary 19. They've done it before. If the staff won't take action, the rest of us can. | Dec. 20, 2011 hombre | Topic: Bats Discussion: new ASA rules surf88; I have not hit with this bat so I'm not disputing your comments, but I respectfully question that any bat approved by ASA could perform like the senior melee. I consider the senior melee one of the, if not the, hottest senior bats. Was the batting tent open so that you could actually see how far the ball traveled? Or were you hitting into a screen. If it's as good as advertised, you won't be able to keep them in supply. Will anyone have them at classic spring training in Jacksonville? Good luck |

($24.00 a dozen) The VRUS SP44 and SP47 are leather. I bought two dozen that I use for batting practice. They perform and last about as long as any of the other balls I use. It's hard to beat $2.00 each for good balls. Go to Anaconda Sports and click on Softball. Then go to the 14th screen. |
| Dec. 16, 2011 hombre | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Fortunate In the theater of softball, most of the flaws I deal with are my own, by far. The benefits are many. Softball forces me to work out on a regular basis just to keep up with you guys. In so doing, it keeps me healthier than the average 65 year old. I love the physical activity, the competition, and most of all, the camaraderie. It also gives my wife a break. LOL There must be an awful lot of players out there who feel the same way since we aren't paid to play. Right now I'm excited about the Classic Spring Training in Jacksonville. Every year I have the opportunity to meet new friends. That's a blessing. |
