Discussion: Rip-It(black), Senior, ASA Bat

Lecak is right on. Our senior league is ASA (unfortunately). That's the only reason for anyone to have an ASA bat in their bag. With the original Freak being banned next year in ASA, I will be looking at the Senior Rip It.

I currently swing a Synergy CNT Flex in league. For an ASA approved bat, it has great pop and in my humble opinion, is the best ASA bat available.

Haven't tried the Senior Combat yet. May give it a go when my U2 breaks.

I just bought a U2 on ebay. I purchased a lightly used one with the ASA 2000 sticker on it. Paid $175. These older U2's hold up much better than last years no warranty ones. My first U2 lasted 3 years before breaking at the end Sept. I have never been burned on ebay yet.

Einstein, there you go again. As the SSUSA staff said in a previous post, anonimity on this board is perfectly acceptable. If people want to put sophmoric comments on this board, it's ok. Just ignore them.

What will you do if you finally figure out who the offensive posters are? Get their phone number and call them? Confront them personally at the next tournament? Call them a coward a loser and a terrorist? Punch them out? Maybe you need to look in the mirror to see if you have an anger management problem.

Anyway, I really hope you find it in your heart to forgive their transgressions.

Peace and happy holidays to all.

Hey Cat. I too see it happening much more often but I don't think this is the answer to the problem. Just too costly and cumbersome to implement. And, I'm not really sure it is a problem. I know there are a lot of guys that want to play a lot more than their core team does and consequently play for more that one team.

SSUSA used to enforce a policy whereby once you played in a qualifer, the roster for that team for future SSUSA events was frozen. Not sure if they still do that.

There are many reasons players change teams but as long as they are playing in their proper ranking, ie, a Major player not dropping to AA, it think it should be alright. Maybe a manager release form would suffice.

To my friend Bashbro 1. I know it's been raining a lot in the Northwest but you really need to get outside a little more. :-) Let me know as soon as you swing one of the new Ultras. I'm curious about the new grip.

Discussion: SUSPENSIONS for Using an ILLEGAL BAT:

Tater, you have got to be kidding. I know what every guy on my team swings. Always have. I cannot imagine that a manager or player would not know what guys are swinging. It's simple curiosity. I pick them up and swing them. If they feel good and I see that they have some pop I may want to get one.

Some responsibility must be put on the manager. What's wrong with every manager taking this issue and addressing it with his team?

Discussion: IMPORTANT NOTICE

Let me start with this statement: Anyone caught using an altered bat should be banned from organized softball forever. Additionally, the team manager should be banned for 1 year (please read the whole post before getting upset about the manager part.) All associations should be contacted.

I am a lifelong softball player and have played at all levels and as such, think I deserve to make a few observations.

For the purposes of this conversation, I will stick to Senior softball.

1. I have seen a lot of speculation as to the number of bat cheaters out there. 30%, 10% etc. The fact is we really don't know and I suspect it is a relatively small number in Senior ball.

2. Those that have been posting about this subject play at the highest level in their respective age brackets and I might conclude that it could be a bigger problem at this level. I have not yet seen or heard about any of this at the lower levels of play and these are the vast majority of players out there.

3. Guys are bigger, stronger and in better shape that they have ever been and with the legal bats, there are plenty of hard hit, screaming line drives and 1 hoppers that can and will eat you up. Hitting is always the last thing to go, Reflexes and speed are first.

4. Everyone that plays this game knows that the risk of injury from a batted ball exists for a variety of reasons. Least of all from a ball hit by an altered bat.

5. Procedures are already in place to address the issue. But, I would expand upon them and make sure they are enforced. First and foremost is education. Make sure that the umpires and tournament directors and team managers know what to look for. That has to come from the bat manufacturers and the associations. As I stated in a previous post, all bats should be inspected by the umpire and team manager before the game. No additional bats will be allowed to come into the dougout during the game.

6. As players and managers, it is our responsibility to police our own. If you know of or even suspect a cheater on your team, it is the managers responsibility to address it. Managers are in the best position to know who may be breaking the rules and have the responsibility to police it. The last thing you want to have happen is for your team and your sponsor to be tainted by allowing it to happen.

In closing, I love this game and hate to see all these crazy changes made to it. It makes it less fun and distracts from the reason we're all out there. To make the great plays, to hit for high average and be with your friends recreating.

Discussion: Altered Bat Update

Policing the altered bat situation should be left in the hands of the bat manuftacturers,Tournament Directors and the umpires.

With the right education from the right people, TD's and umpires should have a better chance of spotting them.

Umpires used to routinly check the bats before every game. What happened to that? I rarely see that happen any more.

I agree with Gary 19. It is not realistic to stop the game and confiscate the bat etc., etc. every time someone is injured by a hit ball. Too may bad hops and misplayed balls for that to happen.

Just way too many hotheads to have players involved in any way. The only time a player should have any input is if he knows of another player on his team using an altered bat. Then he should do the right thing and report it directly to the TD.

There have always been cheaters and liars and they will always find a way if they are so inclined. It's endemic in our society and comes from the top down. All you have to do is look no farther than our political leaders.

I just posted this under the "Einstein" message thread but I will also put it here as it fits:

I must give Einstein credit for his persistence and tenacity. I'm sure he brings the same kind of attitude to his game.

Here's the problem. Persistence is good to a point but there comes a time when it becomes annoying and overbearing. A good salesman knows when that time comes and runs the risk of being completely irrelevent and losing the sale when he crosses that line. In my opinion and from the responses on this board, Einstein has crossed that line many times. It's called beating a dead horse.

In an open forum you will always have a few people that will put up childish posts in response to that. Get over it. It's not the end of the world.

I look forward to Einsteins comments, questions and suggestions as long as they do not not become obsessive, repetitive and yes finally irrelevent.

Just my opinion and hope it is taken in the spirit in which it is given. I too would like to see this board as a place for the exchange of ideas and information.

Discussion: Winter Workouts before next season

Hi Rabbit. Great subject. At our age it is imperative. I started hitting the weights about 10 years ago and I can tell you that it has really helped my game. More strength equates to harder hit balls and more endurance come tournament time.

I try to get to the gym at least 3 days a week and work with lighter weights to start with and gradually build up as I go. I tend not to lift as much during the playing season but will still work out with lighter weights and more reps. I have always had fairly strong legs so I tend to work the upper body more.

I took some pilates classes last year and it really helps with core strength and flexibility.

I am going to take Yoga classes this winter.

Bottom line is that I want to keep father time away from my doorstep and I thimnk this really helps.

I take a multivitamin and fish oil every day. Also, one 85 mg aspirin.

Discussion: Plate As A Strike

The first time I played with a mat was early 90's prior to Senior ball. It was used in league play at the time. The plate has always been a strike when the mat is used.

As a hitter, I really like the mat and plate as a strike. I am much pickier about what I swing at. It also takes all the guess work out for the umps. The only thing they need to worry about is height.

As I pitcher I hate the mat and plate simply because a lot of guys will swing at marginal pitchs when you leave it to the umpire to determine.

Discussion: Injury that has set you back

I am very fortunate so far. Just minor surgeries and nagging injuries so far.

Hernia operations on both sides. To much weight on the bar at the gym.

Elbow tendonitus. Sometimes very painful but mostly just annoying.

Plantar fasciitis. This can be almost crippling. Had it really bad in 2005. No problems this year.

Rotator cuff pain. Again just nagging. Small tears and scar tissue.

I guess after 35 years of softball and just about every other sport you can think of, that ain't bad.

Discussion: Tell us your superstitions and quirky things before or during games

Hi Stones. I used to pitch for the first 15 years that I played slowpitch. I would load up a big wad of "Big League Chew" gum then throw in a few seeds. That came to an abrupt end the day I got a screamer hit right at eye level. I made the catch but in the process, inhaled the wad. Nearly choked to death. LOL :-)

What crazy things do you do before or during the game to insure a better chance of winning and bring good luck ??

One thing that I do is to make sure none of the bats are not crossed in the dugout. That is very bad luck to me.

Hope this thread will provide some light entertainment.

HI BATGUY. I am not aware that the Rip it has been ASA approved. If so, I would like to know where to order. Any help is appreciated.

I think the best ASA bat is the 2006 Synergy Flex CNT. Great pop and durability. The original Freak is hard to find and is commanding over $400 to $600 on ebay.

Discussion: how to solve the illegal bat problem

2 weeks ago in our ASA league which is mostly youngsters with a few of us old guys playing, I accidently hit a laser back at the pitcher that glanced off the side of his forehead. Should my ASA legal bat have been confiscated for testing? Should the ball have been taken for testing? Should I be sued for hitting the pitcher?

Get real ! This is not the solution to catching users of altered bats. It's just a horrible idea and implementation of something like this would simply overwhelm any testing facilities. Can you imagine the truckloads of bats and balls being delivered every week from all over the country every time someone gets hit with a batted ball?

This would be like saying that anytime someone coughs, they should be put in a TB ward because they "might" be contagious.

I think ASA is handling the situation exactly as it should by going after the bat doctors and getting their list of clients.

Discussion: Titanium Bats

Hi Lefty. The only partial titanium bat that is legal is the Miken MSTC T22C6 Titanium Composite Slow Pitch Softball Bat (USSSA).

Here is what Miken says about it: The MikenŽ MSTC T22C6 titanium composite slow-pitch softball bat is crafted with a premier composite barrel that's engineered for enhanced strength and flexibility with a large sweet spot. The cold form construction boosts the titanium alloy's mechanical properties to deliver you optimum performance.

PRICE is $450 and from what I know, it has not lived up to it's hype. At $199, the U2 is still the best bat out there.
